Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus—I know because I’ve got his red shoes

Here are my new red shoes, which arrived via UPS early yesterday.  Ho Ho!  I’m so tickled to have them, I keep pausing my television to go into the bedroom and look at them.  My gosh, aren’t they nice?

Even though they weren’t cheap (more on that later) I’m surprised at their quality—it’s top notch.  And they’re real leather too.

I know what you’re probably thinking—“You got a new pair of shoes, who gives a tinker’s damn!”  Well you’re right, but you have to understand two things:

  1. I’ve been looking for a pair of red running shoes for a long, long time.
  2. But I’m a freak of nature and have two platypus feet.

Does this sound normal to you?  For as long as I can remember, I’ve worn a size 9 1/2 shoe.  In my thirties, my shoes began hurting my feet so I tried a size 10; but they were no good, too loose but still hurt my feet in the front.

Eventually I learned about Wide shoes, and all was good again.  Then in my early fifties, the sides of my feet began feeling pinched again.  That’s when I discovered Extra Wide.  But those shoes can be limited in style & color; still, I made do.

And then in my sixties, I began to notice that Extra Wide was a 50/50 toss up.  Sometimes they fit, not always.

(A few weeks ago I was with my sister Shawn at a Skechers store, half the 9.5 EW shoes hurt my feet.)

So I’m on my computer a couple weeks ago, and googled “it’s hard finding mens shoes that fit”, and found a discussion board where one guy was saying the exact same thing, and someone recommended he check out Propet shoes.  They specialized in extended sizes and widths, and shoes requiring orthotics.

I went to their website and began looking around, and that’s when I saw the red shoes.  In size 9.5, up to XX (5E).  Extra EXTRA Wide.  Yes!

Still, they were $114.95 and I couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for a pair of shoes.  (I just got 2 new pairs of shoes a month ago—buy a pair, get one for free at Skechers.)  I looked at these daily though, and then a few nights ago they were discounted to $84.00 and I pounced on them.

But there’s magic in these ruby red sneakers:  I tried them on, they fit good… but I still wished they were 2% less snug.  I looked them up again on the website and saw someone asking if you could remove the insoles as they wanted to insert their own arch supports.

Another person said yes but remember, Propet shoes also come with removable insoles under the main insoles if you needed more room.  They do??

Yep—I found and removed them from mine (the blue insole below).  And now they fit perfect.  I think I’m going to save these sexy red beasts for our senior center’s first outing in December, and wear them with a splash of Old Spice cologne.  Maybe they’ll work their magic on someone else too. ;^)

  1. Wowza!! Locked and loaded for bear! Exactly the right footwear for comfort and style! Wouldn't mind walking a mile in those moccasins. (In my size of course.)

    1. Haha thank you Florence! I hope this didn't read like an advertisement for Propet footwear, but I've been on the hunt for a pair of red shoes for 2 to 3 years. But for some reason shoe companies only make them for people with normal feet!

  2. My husband has interesting feet too and is always on the lookout for ones that might fit in interesting colors - this could be a great lead. Years ago I went to San Francisco for a week in a pair of Sketchers, forgetting to pack alternative walking shoes and was completely crippled by the end of the second day - for me that brand is a total no-go. If it was me I'd be wearing the Santa shoes around the house etc to get a bit used to them before wearing on a perhaps more walking intensive outing?

    cheers,

    1. Thank you Ceci and yes this company does have some good colors in those bigger sizes... I hope they're a good company! I'm sorry what happened to you in SF with your Skechers, the same thing happened to me a couple months ago with a pair of so-called Extra wide Nikes. PS Thst is an excellent idea to wear these around the house and break them in before 'taking them out', thank you :^)

  3. Oh my gosh, Doug! You had me rolling before I even finished my coffee. Red shoes and a splash of Old Spice. Perhaps you should consider a gold chain and leaving your top button open on your shirt.

    1. Haha--Debby love the video! Ok, I'll never be the gold chain and open shirt type, but I still dig the looks of these shoes :^)

    2. They are dandy shoes. Maybe if you put on a Santa hat, the ladies will all come sit on your lap! :D

    3. Haha! Thanks Debby, that's not a bad idea... 😉

  4. Red shoes and Old Spice--irresistible! My brother wears Sketchers extra wide Wonted loafers and finds them extremely comfortable. I have wide feet too so certain brands and styles are best for me. I don't have any red shoes though!

  5. The red shoes are very sporting. Having a perfect fit is outstanding. Maybe you should buy a few extra pair. When I find something that is perfect, I buy two or three. The red leather for the holidays is perfect too. Great find!

    1. Susan, thanks very much! And yes I like to do the same when I find something I like to wear. I just need to wear these for awhile first to make sure--but I like the idea of these being my holiday shoes, haha :^)

  7. Doug, I hear you! I pretty well could wear any size 8’s until my fifties. I took the plunge and bought a pair of Blundstones ($200.00+, yikes) and wore them for a couple years. I should mention I have probably nine or ten pairs of shoes so I didn’t exclusively wear them. In my mid fifties they suddenly got too tight. The next pair I bought I went up half a size and they are perfect.
Your red shoes are snazzy! Old Spice, goodness, I haven’t smelt that in years. You will have the ladies swooning at the senior centre.
    Enjoy your Tuesday Doug!❤️

    1. Thanks Robin, and glad to hear I'm not alone with this 'spreading foot' thing--but yeow, $200 for shoes! I am sorry for that, but they're like eyeglasses. You just gotta spend. Well I'm glad you think my shoes are snazzy, I hope those ladies at the center think so too :^) Have a great week R.

  8. LOL, it sounds like you have big plans Doug! You'll have to share a photo of you wearing those beauties. The question is: can you click your heels in those ruby slippers?

  11. Dug, I love 'Old Spice'... (guess that dates me), but it's what my father and husband wore for years... that and 'English Leather'. Both seem to have disappeared for a while, but may be making a comeback. As for your new red shoes... they look great and so glad they're comfortable. I'm the same way about spending money... at first I'll say no way am I spending that... then when they come down a bit, I start to
    rethink it.

    1. Rian thanks very much, I'm glad we think so much alike. And I wasn't kidding about that Old Spice, last Christmas I was in CVS picking up a prescription and I saw the Old Spice gift sets cologne and aftershave. The minute I picked one up and smelled it, I guess it dates me too but I bought it anyway! 🙂

  12. Platypus feet, eh? I hope you don’t have a spur on the back of your foot that delivers a painful venom.
I wish Skechers here had a buy a pair get another free, as I like them.
Those of yours look pretty good, and leather as well. I wonder if I can find them here – I wouldn’t buy shoes without trying them on.
Personally, I’d drop the Old Spice, but if that floats your boat…

    1. Peter thank you for the chuckles sir... you cover everything! That Skechers was a very good deal, I certainly never saw that before. But my sister had taken me some place called Tangier Outlets. It wasn't a traditional store, whatever that means. As for those shoes I just got, maybe you can get them I see they're also sold on Amazon. And I very much agree about trying on shoes first, I told a friend earlier today that I bought and returned four pair of red shoes this year in the mail. Something like that you do need to try on first, you're right.

  13. If you keep the shoes right beside you, you won't need to keep pausing your TV. They do look very nice. I have extra wide feet myself but my feet are short (thanks mum) so finding shoes that fit that I can also afford is really hard. For a long while I bought youth size sneakers in the extra wide fit, but they are only available online now and are often marked "sold out". I hesitate to try different brands but I think I'm going to have to.

    1. Thank you River, I know that was silly of me to keep getting up to look at a pair of shoes, but I saw it as getting my exercise too. Shoot I'm sorry you have difficulties getting new shoes as well, I didn't want to go with another brand either. Time will tell with this pair.

  14. Finding shoes that fit can be challenging. It's hard to even find real shoe stores anymore and ordering online is chancy. I am at the age where if I can find a pair that fits, I try to order a second pair in another color or even to match. Those do look comfortable.

    1. Thanks Miss Merry, so true about finding real shoe stores these days. It was great when my sister took me to that Skechers store a few weeks ago, I literally tried on 15 pairs!

  15. I am just glad you were able to find a pair of shoes that are comfortable, no matter what color they are. Love the red shoes, though, and hope to hear how well they work for you. :-)

    1. Thank you DJan, but this was definitely a quest for red shoes, all or nothing. I thought of you when I posted this, as the shoes are actually labeled as hiking shoes. I just didn't want you thinking I was taking up such an arduous thing. 🙂

  16. Glad you were able to get the goods on wide shoes and ones that fit and look good. I don't know if they have them where you live, but there are stores here in California called The Good Feet Store. They can fit anyone. And, as you mentioned a couple of times, they do the orthotics, too. More and more of my older friends are using orthotics because poorly fitted shoes can wreak havoc with your hips and spine.

    1. Thank you dkzody! Actually I was on the hunt for red shoes more than anything, but did realize in the hunt (I bought and returned 4 other pair) that I simply couldn't compromise on their comfort. Hey, we DO have Good Feet stores here, I will have to make a note of this! Thanks again. 🙂
