I think I need a Jattebo in my life—well, in my apartment

Have you ever stumbled across something and thought “I really need this, and I wasn’t even looking for it”?   I did this just recently, and I’m feeling a little excited, wary.

The other night I was watching videos on Youtube of people showing off their new apartments, and one young stockbroker was proud of his (pretty pricey) sectional sofa from IKEA.  I loved the style and color, but I’m not looking for a couch.

But the more I thought about it, I began to wonder “what if I bought just ONE of the sectional pieces?”   This single seat piece costs $530.00.

It’s surprisingly heavy (and being IKEA, you have to do some minor assembly and even attach the fabric yourself, ugh).  But it opens to reveal storage, and I have the perfect place for it.

When I moved into my apartment in 2017, I bought this olive corduroy floor pillow for watching tv while lying on the floor.  It’s larger than you think, around 26” square.  I don’t really watch TV from the floor anymore.

But the JATTEBO one seater is covered in a similar olive corduroy, and the seating portion is 28” square, like a big square ottoman.  But it also has a 28” high, 10” deep back, behind the seat.  I don’t see myself doing a lot of lounging on it, and it’s much lower in height than my sofa and other chair in the room.

But I think the Jattebo would be a perfect guest chair to just plop down on, no arms or pillows in the way.  And it would be nice to come home and have something to drop my jacket & bags on, when I first walk into my apartment.

Here’s the storage available under the seat, and there’s an optional 10” high headrest you can purchase if the back is too low for you

At least I know the color will work—it complements my navy blue couch, don’t you think?  I have some real thinking to do…

By the way, as long as I’m here I thought I’d show you my other chair.  Two years ago, after getting rid of a cheap brown vinyl chair in my living room I was looking for something brighter and more modern.

I found a white chair I really liked, but worried it wasn’t masculine enough or might clash with my sofa.  And when I showed it to my sister, she said “I’m not sure a white chair is going to work in that room.”

I appreciated her honesty—so I grabbed one of my dining room chairs, draped it with a cream towel and let it sit in my living room for a week to get a feel for the real thing.

It did help me to decide, and I ordered the white chair, and was very pleased.  More of an off-white, the fabric is a heavy canvas; and I found a super-soft burlap lumbar pillow from an Indian seller on Etsy.  Here’s the before and after pictures.

It takes some getting used to, the first time you sit on it; the seat cushion is suspended from the floor via straps, like an old school lawn chair.  All I know is, it’s sturdy but soft, and I knew it looked just right in here, in front of my extra-large living room window.

I just hope the JATTEBO works out in here as well.  It might even motivate me to put together that coffee table I bought from Wayfair 2 years ago that’s still under my bed.  Stay tuned.

  2. I like the built in storage in the chair! I am past the days of sitting too low to the floor. Without arms on the chair, I'm not sure I could get up, lol. But it does look like it would fit in your living room and could double as a foot rest or a place to drop your stuff. And you do have the white chair with arms in case of visitors who also require an arm on the chair. I am a fan of IKEA, I can barely allow myself to visit one.

  3. I'm amused by the thought of the coffee table tucked under the bed. You certainly think through your purchases! I think the new chair will look great, the colours are complimentary and one can never have enough storage.

    1. Ah, just what I needed to hear---thank you Maebeme. (And agreed about the storage.)

  4. The coffee table still tucked under the bed tells me that you aren't one to get things put together very quickly. I think you should find a chair like the one from Ikea in your own town's furniture stores, get it delivered, already assembled and ready to go. It would make a nice addition to the room.

    1. dkzody, the coffee table is only under there because I've gotten so used to the open space in front of my couch, and I'm not ready to give it up just yet. As for my own town's furniture stores, I have no car, no way of getting around. I just like the ikea modular stuff a lot. :^)

  5. I like those colors together; I am reversed with a sage green loveseat and a blue recliner. I think it's great to have options about where to sit. However, the thought of putting anything together intimidates me!

    1. Thanks Margaret! Well, I think the seat is mostly assembled. I just need to attach the back to the ottoman part, I'm sure it's a no brainer. :^)

  6. Dug, I've never been to an IKEA, so my first thought is can you return it - if it's not to your liking (after assembly)... and would you have to take it apart again? I do like the color, but without arms, old folks would have a problem getting out of it (not you, but any old guests).

    1. Rian, this is a very good question--I need to check into the "fine print" regarding returns, as it is NOT coming from my local ikea, you can get it thru their online store only. As for the no arms... I know getting up won't be easy but I didnt' want a "true" chair either for that small space. Thanks for your input my friend.

  7. Hi Doug, I know I have said it before but I love how uncluttered and tidy your apartment is! The green chair is very simple and tasteful. Like Rian I have never been to IKEA. My friend Kim is a big shopper there and I love how her home looks. Your white chair is gorgeous! Chuck enjoys sitting on the floor too along with my brother. Maybe it’s a guy thing?? Looking forward to seeing the JATTEBO and possibly the new coffee table.❤️❤️

  8. I wish I was as decisive as you when looking for furniture. I know what I want but can never seem to find it. And if I do find something I like, I read the reviews of the item and wind up talking myself out of it. It's great that you know what you like and what works for you. Your living room looks very comfy!

    1. Thanks Bobi, you're very kind. I'm really not that decisive, I wasn't even looking for this seat, saw it in a video and it just clicked with me. Still on the fence though! But I appreciate the comfy compliment, the room needs more stuff for sure but I'm getting there. 🙂

    1. Thanks Gigi--I just have to find out how simple it is to return if it didn't turn out as expected. It's hard to purchase furniture without seeing it in person.

  10. I have been pondering chairs for a little while now.
Personally, I like arms on my chairs and I’d have that extension for my neck, but if that’s your preference, I say go for it.
I don’t have any similar chairs, I only have four sofas – the east sofa, two south sofas and a west sofa.
One of the south sofas converts into a bed, but as my sister and brother-in-law won’t be visiting again, that function won’t be used.
I have one really comfortable chair. It’s the one I’m sitting on at the moment in my computer room (also my wine room). I spent a lot of time on it.

    1. Thanks for sharing Peter, and it’s good hearing from you. Why am I not surprised at you having 4 sofas? I wish I could see your place for myself. 🙂

  11. I have 5 similar chairs, no sofa and I loved them for many years but now, not so much as I find it very hard to get up from them. Now I sit in a recliner all the time. I never considered getting old but somehow it happens. I would get a chair that colour with arms. Gigi Toronto

    1. Thank you Gigi T, I appreciate your input. I just don't think the space I have for this would be big enough for a traditional chair. I just wanted something a bit more functional that can replace that floor pillow. I'm still deciding.

  12. Doug,

You’re the best 😊 ol’ blogging buddy. Thank you for your kind comments on my blog and even on other blogs … I love it. DJan tells me she loves the poetry, but won’t say that in a reply. 😊 What’s up with that?

Now … I had fun with this … smiling all the while thinking about you and a Jattebo! 😊

    Ode to the Jattebo Dream

A chair appeared from YouTube’s stream,
A stockbroker’s seat, now part of your dream.
Not quite a couch, not just a box,
But storage and style in one clever fox.

Olive corduroy—your heart gave a skip,
It whispered of lounging and jackets to grip.
A guest could plop down with no arms to confine,
A perch with a purpose, and color that’s fine.

You’ve danced this before with that chair dressed in white,
Second-guessed by your sister, then proved it was right.
Now Jattebo tempts you with promise and flair,
A cube full of function, a statement, a chair.

So ponder and measure, let instincts lead on—
With furniture dreams, the magic’s not gone.
And if it inspires that table’s debut,
We’ll toast to your living room—stylish and new!

  13. LOL. John's quite the wordsmith, isn't he?!!! As far as your new chair...well...the first thing I thought was, 'Gees. I remember when he agonized over buying the other chair.' So. I guess it has been two years, old friend!

    2. Doug, don't ever apologize for that. Really. You've got enough on your plate and quite honestly, I'm not a 'tit for tat' person. Show up if you can. If you can't, I get that too. No need for apologies.
