This past week, it feels like I’m living in the Twilight Zone

This has been a strange week.  I shared my feelings with my friend Diana over the phone last night, she made some polite sounds and I thought “Doug you need to keep your weird stuff to yourself” and now here I am, ready to share it on here.

I don’t believe I’m in a particularly normal state of mind right now, so if this becomes too weird or tiresome for you, I won’t blame you for moving on.

Today is “Day 35” of this strange bloated thing going on with my belly.  It’s not too painful, just tender and uncomfortable.  I get up in the morning, my stomach is bulging on the right side.  As the day wears on and I have a cup of coffee, an egg, a sandwich, some soup or pasta, a cookie… by 7pm I’m looking 7 months pregnant.

I don’t feel constipated, my belly just gets bigger and bigger as the day goes on.  I’m trying to move around more, I hope things return to normal soon.

This past Tuesday, I went to the Lutheran Center for lunch, asked a couple friends there (Mary, Deb) if they’d been summoned for jury duty recently.  Mary said no but you can opt out of serving in Allegheny County if you’re 70 or over.  She asked why I wanted to know, did I receive a jury summons.  I said no, I was just wondering for some reason.

When I returned home, I got on my computer and was going thru my email, and there was a new message from my friend & old classmate Pen.  She asked how I was doing and said she’d spent the previous day at her local courthouse after being summoned for jury duty.  I immediately wrote back and told her what had just happened at the center and one of us must be psychic.  A couple hours later, I began smelling “burning oatmeal” and got a bad feeling that stayed with me until I went to bed.

I woke up Wednesday morning with my face & head burning with long-covid pain.  A really serious relapse, and I worried I was back in it for the long haul.  I sat here most of the day in shock & depression.

The very next day (Thursday) I woke up—still a distended, sore belly—but no head or face inflammation.  It was completely gone.  Relieved, I cleaned up and headed to the center and had one of the nicest afternoons ever, just hanging out and talking to my friends Evvie & Geri.  A couple people offered me a ride home when the center was closing, I said it was such a beautiful day I was just going to walk.  I passed my friend Dennis on the street and he asked me if I was ready to see his place above the bakery, and I told him not yet.  I was headed to Kuhn’s Market to buy stuff to make soup for an upcoming blog.  Life was feeling pretty good.

When I got up yesterday (Friday) morning, my head and face were flushed and burning with pain again.  And here I am a day later, still the same, I can’t even turn or tilt my head without lots of “crackling”.  It’s that long covid inflammation, back at work.

After weeks of it being mostly gone, why did it return?  At my last trip to the center 2 days ago, I was showing Evvie & Geri my “sore bulge” (that sounds a bit sketchy, doesn’t it) and Cussin’ Connie walked past and said “YOU’RE A DAMN HYPOCHONDRIAC!”

I love her dearly and that made me laugh.  And I’m not going to argue she’s wrong, I just want my old normal back—whatever that was. If you made it this far, thanks for listening.

And Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow to you moms out there.

  1. It is normal to be concerned about a change in your body. I hope the swelling is just gas. Dang that long Covid, I hope you get some relief. Sending a prayer for you to feel better soon.

    1. Thank you Ann, much appreciated. You're very kind. (And I'm hoping it's that too, based on what I've read.)

  2. Dug, so sorry you are going through this... again. Do you keep a record or journal of these things that happen? You should. It might show some cyclic or periodic info that could be important to you or your doctors. And as for the bulge in your belly, could it be a hernia? That seems like something the doctor should be concerned about. Hope you get to feeling better soon... but you might want to have that bulge checked out (or maybe you did and I missed that info).

    1. Thanks Rian. I don't keep a journal (outside of this blog), but you're right I should've. I just assumed the long covid stuff was pretty much over. As for the bulge, my doctor just looked at it 10 days ago. I wondered the same, could it be a hernia. He said no, it'd be more pronounced. He told me he thought it was related to my gallbladder and I may have to get that removed someday. I think it's a small intestional blockage or trapped gas built up in there. Oh well!

  3. This is when you contact that new young doctor. Is he available by email? Mine is. Send him a picture of your face. Explain the distended abdomen (that is not a good sign so you really need to keep after the doctor about it) and tell him you need help. Be persistent and let him know that this is interfering with your life.

    1. I agree with dkzody, Doug. Demand some resolve from your GP!

    2. Thanks dkzody, thanks Florence. The face stuff (and inflammation) is out of his control, I spent the last 15 months seeing various professionals for that. They all agree that long covid has to run it's course. The belly stuff, if it becomes painful of course I'll speak up. I'm going back in 10 days anyway for bloodwork and if it's still here I'll let him know.

  4. Hi Doug, I'm so sorry for all that you are going through! It must be so discouraging to have this frequent long covid relapses. I am worried about the bulge in your belly. I hope your PCP is following up on this; labs, and some type of imaging sounds like a good first step.

Hang in there, and know that we all care about you and hope that you are on the road to recovery sooner rather than later.

BTW, I LOVE the Twilight Zone! I just finished Alfred Hitchcock's series from the 50's. There are several seasons. It's on Prime Video.

    1. Thanks very much Carole, much appreciated. I loved the Twilight Zone too (I have a deluxe set of it on dvd, complete with the original tv commercials and network promos) but never saw all the Alfred Hitchcock episodes. Someday! :^)

  5. Ah Doug, I am so sorry you are still dealing with this. Jeepers, with all the tests and procedures doctors can do you think they would be able to give you something for your tummy. I LOVE Twilight Zone too! I really hope you feel back to your normal self soon Doug.❤️

  6. I am sad to hear that the long covid stuff is back. But it's really good to hear that you are not letting all this go, and will be seeing the doctor again soon. What an ordeal it has been!

  7. That da*mn long covid! I was hoping it was long gone. And the stomach distension and pain--I don't like that at all. I think you should get back in to your doctor or if it gets particularly bad an ER. Sometimes going to the hospital is what it takes to get tests and answers. Even though that shouldn't be the case!

    1. Thanks Margaret and I very much agree (that one shouldn't have to go to the ER for testing to get done). But I had this once before, in 2018 that lasted a couple months so I'm thinking it just needs time. The long covid stuff.. it's frustrating beyond belief.

  8. I'm sorry you are still experiencing these episodes of long covid. I think it is a good sign the first attack resolved quickly. If only the second had done so too.
The tummy issue is frustrating. I hope it is just gas or a small blockage and it can resolve itself. Is there a test he can do to see if it is gall bladder? I am so sorry you are suffering with it. It is frustrating when you are just miserable and don't know how to resolve it. Not a hypochondriac, just a person who is not himself and wants to know why!

    1. Miss Merry, where do I send the check? This was so nice on your part, thanks very much. I think if the bloating was gall bladder related, there would be more pain. I had gb issues in 2022, lots of pain, and they ran tests (an ultrasound cost me $475 out of pocket) but said it's difficult to know without going in. I'm thinking its gas or a small intestinal blockage. Thank you again and I've been thinking about your son-in-law a lot this week. I hope he's continuing to do okay.

  9. Damn the long Covid. It must be so frustrating to have it flare that way. I'm glad you were able to get out to visit with your friends this week.
As for the bloating, could it be something new in your diet? I'm thinking along the line of an allergy - maybe to gluten? Whatever it is, I hope your doc can provide some answers, non-surgical preferred.

    1. Thanks very much Maebeme, and you're right--I'm glad I was able to get out and see friends this week. As for a possible allergy to something, I did tell my friend last night that this bloat started around the same time I switched to lactose free (ultra pasteurized) milk. I wonder if that's just a coincidence.

  10. Oh, gee, so sorry to hear about the Long Covid reappearance and the tummy troubles. Sounds like your new doc was a bit blasé about something that is having significant impacts on your daily life - I've never had GB issues but have found over the counter gas meds to be helpful in some instances (Gas EX in my case, which was prescribed as part of colonoscopy prep (possibly my least favorite medical procedure, although dental work is also a contender for that honor!).

Good luck with the labs - it does seem like warning you about fasting pre appointment would be routine, doesn't it?

Cheers, and glad to hear you have been able to get back to the senior center gang.

    1. Thank you Ceci, and it's nice to hear from you. Well, I can't do anything about this inflammation in my head going on, but yesterday I did get to the market and I got those little Gas-x pills (and Miralax) to move things along downstairs, if you know what I mean. I hope all is well with you and thanks again :^)

  11. Oh. The Twilight Zone. One of my favorite programs from back when. That and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Route 66 were my go to programs.

Jeez, the things that are afflicting you. I don’t know if I could cope. You must have more strength than I do.

I’m glad you laughed at Connie, she’s completely wrong. You’re a hypochondriac if there’s nothing wrong and you think there is something wrong.
Obviously, that’s not you as you have things wrong and it all sounds awful.

  12. Gigi Hawaii — I think you should request an MRI of your abdomen immediately. I had one in 2023 and was diagnosed with fatty liver, fatty pancreas, cysts in my liver and kidneys, and artherosclerosis. Leads to inflammation, pain, etc. MRIs are definitive, more so than X-rays and CT scans.

    1. Thanks Gigi, I'm sorry you've had to deal with all this. I'm going to discuss this with my doctor the next time I see him. I had this once before (2018) and did get an MRI, was diagnosed with fatty liver like yourself. I'm wondering if I have your cysts too. It sure is making me crabby.

  13. Well...it seems like Dr. Cool should have been interested in looking into this. I agree with Gigi. You need an MRI.

  14. Dug, you have my sympathies. You have been dealing with too many medical issues over the past year or two, and it does wear on you. I have had less significant stuff going on, but over the past 18 months I have had to limit the way I live my life to accommodate it. I am, I hope, in the last stretch and might be able to get back to normal life soon. I live alone and my friends are sick of hearing about it, too.

As for the tv shows, I have a Roku and can watch old episodes of Cheers, Family Ties, all kinds of shows that I find fun. But I will avoid Hitchcock's series forever because I still have an image in my head of the scariest face I had ever seen at age 10. I don't wanna run into it again.

    1. Hi Nina, thank you so much; I'm sorry you're going thru your own personal battles, but it's nice to hear from a kindred spirit. It's also nice to hear from someone who isn't too good for old tv shows, haha--love me some Roku Channel! I don't blame you a bit for not liking Hitchcock. I tried watching Exorcist a year or so ago--nope! That voice gets me every time
