Diana, Ruth & myself at the Phipps Conservatory—a whole lotta green goin’ on

Tuesday morning, my friend Diana and our former classmate Ruth (who I haven’t seen in 46 years) traveled to Pittsburgh, and the three of us went to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, established in 1893.

It honestly blew me away—I’ve lived in the city almost 40 years, and this was my first visit there.

I probably took 100 pictures, but when I began pulling them up on my computer for editing & downsizing, all I saw was a whole lot of green.

I don’t think they were interesting enough to show that many here, but I still wanted to post a few just for memory’s sake.

Afterwards, we went to the Cheesecake Factory for an early dinner, and what would one of my posts be without a couple food pics?

Here’s the outside of the Conservatory (it was a pretty cloudy day).

Here’s a nice shot of Diana (left) and Ruth, shortly after we entered the first dome.
This dome contained some British-type gardens; I loved the green statues in the far back.  (You can click on any photo to enlarge.)
One cool crocodile (if you wave your hand in his mouth, two giant crocs emerge from the water).  In the second photo are some verrry tall gold & red glass sculptures.
More giant glass pieces among the greenery.  These are big enough to lay down in
A sloth hangs from a tree; a pair of elephant sculptures, spraying water
There’s a path that winds below the surface, then emerges into a forest filled with live butterflies.  It was breathtaking, I captured a bright orange one here.
After the conservatory, we went to the Cheesecake Factory.  Diana got a spicy dish of Korean barbecue chicken, but first enjoyed a big slice of banana cheesecake for an appetizer.  She’s a grownup, she can do as she pleases.
Ruth got a chicken salad sandwich and sweet potato fries, and I got this “Bee Sting” flatbread pizza (with a spicy hot honey sauce) and a Caesar salad. Everything was delicious.

I did get a piece of their famous cheesecake to go, but wound up devouring the whole thing before we left.  At $11.95 a slice, I wish I’d made it last longer!

  1. It looks like it was a great visit for everyone. And I am aware of how hard it is to actually take home something like delicious.

  3. What beautiful gardens although that croc would weird me out! That glass looks like the work of Chihuly. I'm a little scared of hurting butterflies although I've been in several areas like that and done fine. I'm delighted that you went on this friend outing and had such a delicious lunch. I've always enjoyed Cheesecake Factory's food. What kind of cheesecake did you get??

    1. Thank you margaret! It really was lovely, I thought I'd be bored but I loved it. I had the standard strawberry glazed cheesecake which was nice but nothing special; Diana had a banana cheesecake that she gave me a bite of and it was the lightest fluffiest cheesecake I've ever tasted. 🙂

  5. Chihuly glass!!!! I love that conservatory. I've always thought it was one of those things I'd like to do when I got the time. It looks like great fun! And...would you believe...I have never once eaten at The Cheesecake Factory!

    1. Thank you Debby, I couldn't remember the name of that glass but you're right! It was a wonderful visit, by the way this was my first trip to the Cheesecake Factory as well 🙂

  6. What an absolutely fabulous place! Magical!! I could spend hours there. I did enlarge the photos so I did not miss anything. What a hidden jewel in your city. And what great companions to tour the conservatory and gardens.
Your lunches looked delicious. Recently a friend and her husband stopped at a Cheesecake Factory. She was appalled at the cost of a single slice of cheesecake. They ended up splitting a slice. My philosophy is that you only live once, lol.
What a great day with friends!

    1. Miss Merry, your comments are always so thoughtful they just make my day. Thanks so much, I'm very glad we're friends. And for the record, I'm in 100% agreement with your friend. $12 for a slice of cheesecake? C'mon! 😂

  7. Sounds like a very nice outing with friends. The conservatory is lovely!
I think the last time I ate at a Cheesecake Factory was in Honolulu back in 2013. I recall the food was very good.

    1. Thanks Maebeme! I'm really hoping we can plan another outing there with my senior center for Christmas; I was told that it's really super special that time of year. As for Cheesecake Factory, it was good but I'd much rather eat at the one you went to. 😉

    1. Thank you Beth, very nice of you to say--and I hope you had a good dinner tonight :^) That's a wonderful memory you have about playing music there, and I've heard how nice Phipps is at Christmas, I'm going to try and make it back this year--I'm sorry I'll be missing out on your flute!

  9. These were great pics Doug I've never been to your city but didn't expect something this lush up north. If you ever make it to Tennessee you should check out the Gaylord Opryland Garden Conservatory. It's a resort you can stay there too. Dinner's on me. =Dave

  11. That's an expensive slice of cheesecake, but glad you enjoyed it. The food looks delicious. As for the conservatory, wow!!! Wish we had something like this in Hawaii. I love the sculptures! Very well-planned garden. Kudos to the landscape architect.
