Soup Thursdays aren't for everyone, and patience isn't a virtue--it's a necessity

Here was my Thursday dinner.  A crusty roll and bowl of Mexican Style Street Corn Soup.  It was very tasty with several cheeses and jalapenos, and the can suggested I add a dollop of sour cream so I did.  I never thought I'd be eating Campbell's again, but I do like their Home Style soups.

I eat soup every Thursday.  This began a couple years ago, when I would eat a light dinner on Thursdays because I did a weekly weigh-in Friday mornings.  (It's no longer official, but I still do those Friday weigh-ins.)

Anyway, Wednesday night I'm talking to a friend on the phone while looking at the cans of soup in my cupboard and trying to decide.  She said "Why must you have soup on Thursdays?  You know what--never mind."

What's the problem here?   I said "I don't have to have it only on Thursdays.  On Monday I had a BLT with butternut squash soup for dinner.  But Thursday will still be Soup Thursday.  It doesn't have to be one flavor, one week it could be a bowl of Tomato Bisque and a grilled pepper jack cheese sandwich, the next week a ham sandwich and broccoli soup."

All she said was "Okay Sheldon."  I admit it, I've become a creature of habit, particularly while waiting for these long covid symptoms to abate.  I'll admit something else; Fridays are Fish Fridays.  That's not during Lent, that's year round.  It might be fried haddock one week, baked flounder the next.  But Thursdays are Soup Thursdays and Fridays are Fish Fridays.  I don't understand why this would bother anyone, do you?

Part 2:  These things take time... too much time

This past Sunday after finishing that blog about my childhood church, I was eager to get cleaned up and head outside.  We were having our first day of blue skies and warm temps in months, and I wanted some.  But while putting on my shoes, I began "smelling covid", that strong odor of burnt hair and diesel fuel & baked beans.  (That means a flare up is fast approaching.)  I wound up turning everything off, going into the bedroom and shutting the door.  I laid in there until almost 5pm.

This has been a daily thing since my big relapse in September.  A mild burning in the eyes and face in the morning,  it rises and falls during the day, settles down around 10pm.  But every couple days it's a crazy-ass flareup day; I honestly wonder if this will ever go away.  It did last summer.

Monday morning, my barber sent me an article about long covid and "micro clots" in the blood, which scientists say are causing the long term symptoms.  It was a scary but interesting read and meant a lot that Roe took the time to read the article and send it to me.

Anyway, after getting up and starting my Sunday dinner (cheesy rice with roasted green peppers & baked chicken) I turned on the tv to catch the next episode of "Pioneer Woman".  I began watching her cooking show a couple years ago with Season 1, Episode 1 and vowed to watch every show.  I am currently on Season 7, Episode 3.  My 81st episode!

I don't think my Soup Thursdays are "Sheldon-esque", but I admit I'm pretty anal about finishing things I've started.  After this one was over, I noted there were 10 more episodes of Season 7.  There are 13 episodes per season.  How many seasons are there in total?

THERE ARE 39 SEASONS.  (She must do 3 seasons every calendar year.)

I did a manual count of remaining episodes to watch.  I have 416 more shows.  It took me 3 years to watch 80, I'm not sure I want to watch 416 more.  I turned off her show, turn on the news... this is not a joke.  They said "In entertainment news, for you fans of the Pioneer Woman, she just started filming her 40th season."

This will probably be one habit I can break!

  1. Dug, I had to laugh at your Soup Thursdays... only because DH eats soup every lunch (or almost every). He loves soup... and generally it's Progresso (tomato basil, broccoli and cheese, chicken and sausage gumbo, split pea, etc.) But listening to your menus, I think you eat very healthy. I imagine some bachelors just use frozen dinners.

That nasty LC just won't let go of you. But I think that article from your barber about micro clots in the blood is interesting. Possibly they could do something to eliminate these (if it turns out to be true) in the near future.

And I used to watch Pioneer Woman (and still use many of her recipes - she has a great dark chocolate pie recipe). Now I'm into Joanna Gaines recipes (she has many videos - some decor, some food) In fact, tonight I'm making her Fatayers (Google Joanna Gaines Fatayer video). I also love The British Baking Show and try to do some of their stuff (although some are beyond me). Cooking shows are the only reality shows I watch. ; )

    1. Thanks very much Rian, and that was nice to read about DH! (I've never tried that Progresso gumbo, but I think I will now.) Yes, the LC is a real chain around my ankle.... it did go away for 3-4 months a year ago, I just have to hope it does again. Hey I need to watch that British Baking Show, I've heard lots of good things about it. I hope your eye is still healing Rian.

  2. Nothing wrong with having a routine. It is our little ruts that allow us to keep our focus in the chaotic days.

  3. Hi Doug, I am a creature of habit food wise too. More so when Chuck was still working as he was gone everyday for lunch. I could pretty well
eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day. But I have loosened up a bit in the last year as Chuck likes variety and I do most of the cooking (he does clean up). I still occasionally smell diesel too Doug. I am so sorry you have to deal with all this.❤️ I know who the Pioneer Woman is but never have watched an episode of her show. Wow, she is very popular if she is on her 40th season! We have a show here in Canada called “ The Nature of Things”. I know it has been on for more than 50 years. Hope you are having a good day today!❤️

    1. Robin, you always have something interesting to share, thank you for doing that (and reading my nonsense). Gosh I'm sorry you still smell diesel on occasion too, but it's nice to know someone else gets it. (And I'm glad Chuck does his part now that he's retired, haha). Well Robin, Pioneer Woman started in 2011, but she does like 3 13-episode seasons a year. I'm currently in 2013 I think. She's still proud to cook with tons of sugar. I'll have to look up The Nature of Things, thank you Robin. ❤️

  4. I used to read the Pioneer Woman blog when she was just a blogger and not a franchise. I've had a couple of her dishes and haven't liked them, so I wonder what's wrong with me, since she's extremely popular. I eat routine stuff too and find it comforting. I love the idea of Soup Thursdays and Fish Fridays. It sounds like a healthy way to have a light, healthy meal.

    1. Thank you Margaret. I used to read her blog too (like 10 years ago) and I still use her recipes for sloppy joes and crushed tomato spaghetti sauce, but that's about it. I think I want to switch over to your show, the British Baking Show. :^)

  5. I have to wonder how many variations of things she can possibly make? I know there are lots of dishes throughout the world that I haven't even heard of, but from the shows I've watched she tends to make a certain, shall I say, genre of dishes? To be fair, I'm not a huge fan. I gave up Food Network with my cable subscription and rarely stream any food shows.
Now my daughter would tell you, your menu routine is a sign of a neuro-divergent person. I don't know but I share a similar outlook. In my case, Tuesday is breakfast for dinner night, Thursday is leftovers, Friday is usually homemade pizza, Sunday is Sunday dinner - as it was when I was a child. Routines are not only practical but also comforting.
I do continue to hope that the long Covid symptoms lessen and fade sooner rather than later. Take care!

    1. Thank you Maebeme, you're right about Pioneer Woman--her dishes are "very hearty". I'm waiting to see if she makes some lighter stuff in future seasons, maybe I'll jump ahead. :^) And I like that term, neuro-divergent. Your own routines sound good, and I am the say about Sunday Dinners. Thanks for your kind words here. :^)

  6. It doesn’t bother me that you have regular dishes on certain days. I don’t do it, but if that’s what floats your boat (or your croutons) go for it, I say.

I usually have soup only in winter – except for gazpacho which I make several times a summer. I’m not a canned soup person; I prefer to prepare it all myself. Of course, with your covid, I understand that you wouldn’t want to be standing around chopping and cooking for an hour or two.

I have fish several times a week, most often sushi and/or sashimi, but also cooked fish – flathead, tuna, salmon, barramundi, blue grenadier and occasionally some others.

I don’t know that program, but with close to 500 episodes I’m not about to start as I can get a bit OCD about things I like and that one would definitely take up far too much time.

    1. Thanks for sharing Maestro--well, even if I was fully well I wouldn't be cooking like you do. You're a gourmet and I'm one step above frozen dinners. I do envy all your varieties of fish, we simply don't have that here. And as a matter of fact, I'm watching the Pioneer Woman right now baking ham & Scandinavian potatoes :^)

  7. I know a lot of people whose mothers served certain foods the same day of the week when they were growing up. Mine didn’t. It probably makes planning easier. I hardly cook at all anymore, and rely on bagged salads and rotisserie chicken a lot. I only like soup when I’m sick, maybe because I live in a hot climate, IDK. I watched PW years ago. She was warm and friendly, but I thought the food was a little fattening. I’ve heard that she lost weight, so maybe the recipes have changed. My kids are into watching Survivor, and this is Season 50! I used to watch it, but after a while it seems to have the same pattern, even with different contestants. Anyway, you do you 😊. Joyce

    1. Thanks very much for sharing Joyce, you know my mother had no routine when it came to my emails either. I just do it because it helps me manage my volume of eating, haha. I was wondering if the pioneer woman has changed any since 2012 the year I'm currently on. She is a bit heavy and does make a lot of hearty meals. And yes I'm a big survivor fan too, I can't wait to watch it in fact it's on in 10 seconds! Thanks Joyce hope you're doing well.

  8. I think Soup Thursday is a wonderful idea. It wouldn't catch on here since Mr Merry does not eat soup. I can't understand how someone can dislike soup; I blame his mother. I am a fan of Fish Friday myself. I believe it started with the abundance of fish fries during Lent, but I always think fish on Friday and it is always nice when someone else cooks for me. It is a challenge this year since most fish fries have raised their price and I struggle to pay $23 for a fries and fish in a styrofoam box. Plus I am supposed to be on a very low sodium diet and after abstaining I can really taste the salt used in breading. I'm thinking shrimp fettuccini this Friday. When my grandkids were little I started muffin tin Mondays where foods were cut up into bite sized pieces and served in a muffin tin. Everyone is in school now so I had to discontinue the muffin tins.
Gosh darn your LC. I do hope, and am crossing fingers and toes, that you have a summer free of symptoms!

    1. Miss Merry you always manage to make me chuckle, I so much enjoyed reading this, thank you :^) At the same time, I now have shrimp fettuccini stuck in my head! I am glad for your sodium abstaining given your current health issues, gosh darn it I need to do the same. The muffin tins sounded very sweet and I appreciate your good wishes. :^)

  9. I gotta laugh. Anyway, I don’t watch Pioneer Woman, but do watch Asian cooking shows on Prime and Netflix. I love soups, too but any day is fine. Gigi Hawaii.
