Wednesday morning, someone from Steiner Realty slid a key to our new Fitness Room under my apartment door. I grabbed it and high-tailed it downstairs.
Finally, I’d get to see that room!
I was surprised, it was much larger than I anticipated. John (one of our maintenance men) was down there, waiting for the arrival of a fourth exercise machine and for someone to install cable behind that new tv.
John said that besides the television & exercise equipment, the room’s door, ceiling, walls, flooring all got updated. It sure smelled new down there!
Here’s two treadmills, and a stationery bike. These machines are GINORMOUS. (Did you know ginormous was actually a word?) Anyway, I’ve owned a few home workout contraptions in my lifetime, but nothing like these machines.
There’s a weight lifting machine in the back, with a couple of benches, pulleys, etc. John said they were also installing a rack for free weights.
And here’s John, one of Steiner’s finest! I was surprised when he told me there were 12-13 residents who wanted access but weren’t getting keys. When I asked why, he said they wouldn’t sign a waiver promising not to sue if they hurt themselves. People today are lawsuit-happy.
Just as I was planning to leave and return later, they brought in the fourth machine; one of those steppers, stair climbers, whatever you call it. I LOVE THiS MACHINE.
I didn’t last very long, barely 6 minutes on there. The back of my legs (and my backside) couldn’t take it, they were VERY sore the rest of the afternoon. But I went down again yesterday, and lasted 15 minutes this time (with a 1-2 minute break in-between).
Well, it’s a start!
Thanks for the new gym, Steiner
Yay! How exciting for you and your neighbors. The room looks great and holds more equipment than I would have thought it had room for. Those steppers are good machines but you might want to start low and work up so you won't be too sore the next day! We belong to Silver Sneakers (since we're old- ha!) and that gives us free access to several gyms. We haven't been in the past year due to Covid but I'm ready to start back up again. Have fun on those machines!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bonnie! Well, I've always wanted to use equipment like this, and even if I belonged to Silver Sneakers like yourself (I'm getting there, haha) there's no gyms in walking distance to me. So this will be very convenient :^)
DeleteVery nice indeed! You can even cross-train with such a selection. Hope you have earbuds and music/podcasts to listen to when you work up to longer sessions. Looks like they have a small restroom where you can refil your water bottle, etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks Florence, but cross train?? I was thinking more like "I'm bored, think I'll go down and play around on one of those machines for a half hour!" :^) But it is a nice setup, and I do have an MP3 player and earbuds I used in the good old days, we'll see.. :)
DeleteLooks like something I could definitely use. Nice setup!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Paul! Also, nice to meet you :^)
DeleteWow! Having a gym like that in your own apartment building is super nice! Hopefully there won't be any arguments over what to watch on the TV while working out. ha!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Sue, very true! Thanks! :^)

Boy, that’s some apartment complex you have there. My apartment block only consists of apartments, and there are only six of those – two big ones (3 bedrooms) at the front (one of those is mine) and four smaller (2 bedrooms) at the back.
ReplyDeleteThe only exercise I get these days is walking. I used to play tennis but stopped that a long, long time ago when I developed tennis elbow. This wasn’t from playing, it was caused by trying to extract a recalcitrant cork from a bottle of champagne (Billecart-Salmon for those who are interested in such details).
Peter, it's great to hear from you--I've been wondering how you're doing. Well, I've spent most of my life in small apartment places, so this is a nice change--having a maintenance staff and the like. Anyway, your tennis elbow story gave me a chuckle, you're pretty debonair, but I sincerely hope you're all better. :^)
DeleteNow that looks like a fun room! I've seen similar ones here in large apartment blocks where the entire ground floor is entrance lobby, gym and pool with some of them also having a sauna. Those are the "richer people" apartments, people who own or rent, not people like me in subsidised public housing. I didn't last even two minutes on a treadmill three years ago in the cardiologists office and I felt so ashamed because I thought I was reasonably fit.
ReplyDeleteThanks River--yes I've seen those apt & condo places too with big exercise rooms, my younger sister lives in a townhome complex in Charleston with indoor/outdoor pools, sauna, etc. And yes these machines are tougher than they look. :(
DeleteI hope you realize your power. You turned an unused room into a really handy exercise room with just a comment. Glad you are already using it and plan to keep it up.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Thanks Patti! I tried telling John how I wished for this and it came true 2 days later, he said "Oh we had this planned for around a month" and I told him to just humor me :)
DeleteHi Doug, the new exercise room looks great! Wonderful choice of equipment. I have been wanting a stepper, elliptical whatever they are called for awhile but as you say they are huge. I wouldn’t know where to put it.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
Hi Cat Lover, thanks! I'm like you, been wanting a stepper too. I should take better pictures, because you're right, they ARE huge. Do you have a basement? I couldn't see that machine in my apartment... anyway, thanks for writing and I hope you have a good weekend too :)
DeleteI do have a basement. With some rearranging I probably could fit one down there. I walk outside right now for an hour a day for exercise and find I really enjoy it. Our province (Ontario) is going to slowly come out of lockdown this week and continue over the coming weeks so finally we are able to visit some stores. Hopefully I can look at steppers then.
DeleteThat sounds great, darn it I should get out and walk more too. That's probably the best exercise we can get!
DeleteWow! Nice exercise room, Dug! My only comment is "Don't overdo"... start slow. It is possible to hurt yourself if you're not careful. I'd say 30 minutes a day seems reasonable (to me anyway). And having it right there in your apartment building is so convenient...
ReplyDeleteWe're finally getting out a bit. We walk the neighborhood and have started walking in the mall again (masked of course)... even went to Home Depot and Lowes recently.
Thank you Rian, I have a feeling it's going to be awhile before I get up to 30 minutes! I think what you're doing (walking) is great, I need to get more disciplined like you & your partner. Anyway, good to hear you guys are getting out more--I know you've been really careful for awhile now.
DeleteThat looks like state of the art equipment that none of us could afford (or have room for), so you'll get to try all sorts of new cardiovascular and toning, you lucky Doug! (duck!) LOL I'm shaking my head at those who refused to sign the waiver; they would hurt themselves for sure because they would figure that they could get money out of it at least. Have fun with your exercise room; it sounds like you're making progress with your stamina! Woot!
ReplyDeleteThank you Teavher Woman! (I was just looking at your profile) :^) You're right Margaret, I DO feel lucky right now--there's no gym within walking distance to me but I was still giving serious thought to joining one. This is a BIG help. And yes, these people here refusing to sign a waiver... I think it's ridiculous. Well M, thanks for the encouragement!
DeleteWe have a small home gym which has come in handy this past year. We have a nice stair stepper like the one above, a sit down exercise bike and an old BowFlex from my younger days. I haven't used it in a handful of years but I've promised to start again when the kids are home from school for the summer in a few more days.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool Ed (and another reason to own a home vs apartment). Darn it, I wanted one of those Bowflex machines for years.
DeleteState of the art equipment, that's for sure. Lucky you, and as with all exercise, best to start slow and not get burned out on it all. Wish I had something like this here. I have to make do with walking and hiking.
ReplyDeleteThanks DJan, but I'm the one that envies you. What you do takes a lot of discipline and you're rewarded with those gorgeous views! Well, we have a tv down there to look at, haha. But seriously, I am very grateful for what Steiner did here. Now I just need a little more motivation :)
DeleteWow! I am so IMPRESSED! That is absolutely awesome. People would really want to rent an apartment in your building. I can see why they wouldn't want to give a key to a resident who didn't sign the waiver.
ReplyDeleteI believe that machine is called an elliptical. It's supposed to be more gentle on your knees, I think. I can't remember. But somehow it didn't work that way for me.
We bought a treadmill for mom over 10 years ago and she still uses it everyday. She attributes that to also keep her moving and healthy. Me? I tried it once and actually fell. What the heck? Mom? No, she hasn't fallen. Fingers crossed.
Art used the treadmill once and yup. He fell too, BUT it's cause he was doing something really reckless trying to take a photo of the reading or some other crazy thing. People are going to think we're weird.
Kay, haha--I don't mean to laugh but you & Art are a fun pair! Well, good to hear your mom can handle a treadmill, I've never been on one--now I gotta try it myself. And thanks for the clarification on the one machine, elliptical, of course. It seems to be okay on my own one bad knee, but I don't want to push my luck :^)
DeleteThat's fantastic -- a real work-out room! Don't overdo it and upgrade your activities gradually. Some excellent-looking machines.
ReplyDeleteI read earlier about your new TV, vision issues reading captions with your old TV. Glad you've resolved those issues and have a new larger TV. My mother coped with being legally blind for many years so I've always been especially sensitive to such problems. I had to have cataract surgery on both eyes years ago. I wear half-glasses for reading but have difficulty reading some captions now depending on print size, letters color, background contrast on my TV that's probably about 10'-12' feet across the room. I think my flat screen TV is 32" but is not a smart one as I purchased just before those became predominate.
Hi Joared, thanks very much for your comment. Wow, I'm sorry you underwent cataract surgery but glad it worked well for you. I'm really surprised how many people I know have had that, I wonder if it's in my own future. Anyway, if you can see a 32" tv from 10 feet away... that's terrific. I've gotten pretty accustomed to this 43" screen, it doesn't seem so large anymore but it IS a lot easier to see & read now. I'm going to have to measure the screen downstairs in the new fitness room now :^)
DeleteTerrific! Now you can exercise whenever you want.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gigi, now I just need the motivation! :^)
