A ride on the Incline and the Grandview Saloon: Made it Ma! Top of the world!

The day before yesterday was a gorgeous day in Pittsburgh, and some of us from the center went on a little road trip to the Grandview Saloon on Mt. Washington for lunch.

Mount Washington sits high above the city’s skyline and it’s where some of the ‘burgh’s best (and most expensive restaurants) are located.  You can either take a long & windy drive up there, or ride the Duquesne Incline straight up a STEEP mountainside.

I’ve lived in the city 35 years, been to Mt. Washington probably 20 times, seen the Incline (from below) a thousand times easy, and this was my FIRST trip on it.

Here we go!

Inside the Incline car on the way up the mountain—the car (and it’s hammered copper ceiling) is 146 years oldPearl, Margie & Colleen (Colleen coordinated the outing but insisted she wasn’t our chaperone, so live it up)

And there’s me, having a flat hair day
I took this picture out the rear of our car to capture the steepness of the hill, and caught my friend Janet & her Elton John glasses on the right
We made it to the top!  Here’s a pic of our group on the observation deck; Gary (the big guy on the right) just shouted “Isn’t this great Chuck?”  He insists on calling me Chuck.  I’m okay with it.The Incline’s Museum, which I later whined I needed to go back and get a souvenir; Colleen said “Douglas you have 10 minutes and not a second more!”
Inside the Grandview Saloon—hmm, it doesn’t LOOK like a saloon, but it sure had beautiful views of the city
The view outside our window; you can see people dining on the patio below
And finally, what I had for lunch—a Reuben platter.  I know it’s not pretty, I forgot to take the pic until I was halfway done :^)

    1. Thanks Miss Merry! There were several people in our group that refused to ride the incline, and they were driven up. I didn't blame them a bit it's very steep.

  4. That Pearl! She sure knows how to organize an outing!

You know every time I read about one of your adventures, it makes me smile. Quite a change up from a year ago when you were wanting to do so much but did not quite know how to start. God bless Pearl.

    1. Thank you Debby, but it wasn't Pearl who organized this, it was Colleen (the third one in the photo). But it was very sweet what you said here, thank you!

  6. What an exciting excursion, Doug (a.k.a. Chuck). So glad you took pictures and shared. That incline car is quite an antique. I could have spent hours just enjoying the view. Can't imagine where your crew are heading next but really looking forward to more reports.

  7. Colleen chose well! This trip sounds outstanding. The views are spectacular. The track is amazing when you imagine the effort to build on a very steep rise. The incline car looks spectacular with the copper ceiling. Did you get your souvenir?

    1. Thanks Susan, and I very much agree that incline is an engineering marvel. And as a matter of fact, I did get my souvenir haha. A refrigerator magnet of the incline. 😄

    1. Thank you Gigi, I even mentioned you when I was there. Someone asked me why I was taking a photo of my half-eaten lunch, I said because my friend Gigi often shares restaurants and meals on her blog! 👍🙂

  9. Hi Doug! (or is it Chuck? 😁) What a lovely way to spend a gorgeous fall day! The incline is scary steep. So glad you were able to enjoy this social event. Creating memories; that's how I like to think of the good times.

    1. Thanks very much Carole! That incline was very steep, as long as you didn't watch the rails going up, haha PS. More and more, I feel like a Chuck :)

  10. Dougie, that can’t be! You never rode the incline before today?!!

  11. I think your adventures with the Senior Center have made it worth joining (not to mention the lunches and friends also). Plus it's giving you plenty of blogging material. We haven't gone on any of our SC exploits yet... or joined any classes as they are almost always already filled. But we will eventually. And glad you got your souvenir!

    1. Thanks very much Rian, I was wondering how things were going with your own recent center joining... well, when you're single you're more motivated to take part in these outings and such I suppose. And you're right about the blogging material. :^)

  12. What a coincidence! My husband and I ate at that very same restaurant in 2018! The name didn't ring a bell (we think it was called Coal Hill Steakhouse) but I looked up my pics and sure enough, same tables & chairs and view. It looked super familiar in your pics. We enjoyed our meal and the view! And, of course, we rode the incline (but it wasn't our first time, ha!) Glad you had a good time and thanks for bringing back some good memories for us. Too cool!

    1. Bobi how awesome is that--and you're right, that little 'saloon' is part of the Coal Hill Steakhouse! (I'd like to return there in the evening for dinner!) Anyway, so cool that someone else on here has been there... :^)

  13. I’m used to San Francisco’s hills, but that one sure puts them in perspective. I must visit Pittsburgh one day, although time is passing rather quickly.

That’s an amazing looking cable car – loved the copper ceiling.

I’m very fond of Reuben sandwiches. Fortunately, there’s a deli here in Elsternwick that makes a good one.

    1. Thanks Peter, and it would be great if you could visit Pittsburgh someday--or better yet, me visit Australia. Reubens are everywhere here, I could go for some decent fish & chips. :^)

  15. I love that you're exploring more about your beautiful city, socializing and going places with friends (huge group of them!) and having a great time. The reuben looks yummy too! That is a beautiful ceiling in that car.

  16. That's a cool incline car. Yep that looks a bit spooky. I remember getting spooked going up an incline system to get to the top of Stone Mountain in Georgia. Chuck, eh? You DO have the charming appearance of Charlie Brown from the comic strips. I love to go to museums or exhibits and MUST go to the gift shop. That sandwich looks good. (You know they're fairly cheap to make at home: just get some good meat from the grocery's deli counter, swiss cheese, the type of rye bread you like, a can of kraut, rinsed and drained, and Thousand Island dressing; popped into the microwave after toasting the bread in the toaster.) Thanks for taking us along on your adventures! Linda in Kansas

    1. Thank you Linda, I think half the fun of writing a blog is getting to read fun comments like yours. I do feel like a Charlie Brown! And I'm good with Chuck too. As for that car being spooky, it was a little bit but in a good way. Just had a good vibe in there. 🙂

    1. Haha Debby, it was one of those glossy refrigerator magnets of the incline. I should have ended the blog with it instead of a half eaten reuben 😋
