Computers, covid & Christmas: life goes on & on

Remember me?  It’s been three weeks since I’ve last written, but feels a lot longer for some reason.  In my last post, I lamented that my 2011 laptop had finally bit the big one and I’d lost all my stuff and was unable to blog again for the time being.

Shortly after that, an old friend and former classmate reached out and told me about an apparatus on Amazon for extracting data from a defunct computer’s hard drive.  I was surprised to hear from her, we had a falling out a couple years ago and I assumed I’d never hear from her again.  She’s a better person than I gave her credit for, and it meant a lot.  Thanks Pen.

Around the same time I got my new laptop (which I’ve yet to do anything with), I learned my neighborhood pharmacy was shutting down, part of the big Rite-Aid bankruptcy.  My bp & heart medications were re-directed to the nearest Giant Eagle, a couple miles from me and not acessible by public transportation.  My old friend Susie drove me there, but the next day contacted me and said “Dougie, I have bad news.  You know I’ve been staying with my sister-in-law… she tested positive for covid this morning.  We’re probably next.”

Sure enough, two days later on Saturday December 9, I awoke feeling like someone had beaten me up while I slept.  Went to the bathroom, grabbed a covid test from my medicine cabinet and yep—I was positive for covid.

I know covid treats everyone differently—some people get slammed and wind up going to the hospital, for others it’s nothing more than a bad cold.  Mine was pretty rough, and for the next 4-5 nights I had a 102.6-103.0 fever.  I’d go to bed with my teeth clamped down from my baking head, and wake up in the morning with my teeth chattering from wet bedsheets soaked with perspiration.

My local senior center was wonderful during this time.  They checked in on me regularly, and since I couldn’t attend the annual holiday party, stopped by to drop off a nice gift and some holiday goodies.

I wish I could say things ended on a happy note, but exactly one day later—Saturday December 16—I awoke with my right jaw swollen, and my cheekbones and both eyes burning.  I wondered if all the stress from that covid had reactivated my TMJ disorder.

I can’t say for sure what it is, but right now I’m dealing with a lot of mouth soreness and inflammation.  I was able to show my doctor using my smartphone, he thinks it could be a sinus infection, but won’t prescribe antibiotics just yet.  He has me on a couple of prescription strength decongestants for the rest of the week and says we’ll go from there.

While I am having some difficulty eating, at this time of year my local deli sells various holiday “fluffs” of roast turkey and ham & pineapple that are very soft & billowy, and require no chewing.  They’ll help me ride things out, but I’m sure things will return to normal soon.

I want to look at events from a positive perspective; in the last couple weeks, I’ve lost 7.8 pounds!  This is the kick in the pants I needed to get things in motion.

Another good thing that resulted from posting my tech-woes here, I have my old laptop working again, sort of.  Someone local who wishes to remain anonymous wrote and asked me the particulars of my defunct laptop.  He recommended a couple accessories on Ebay which I got a couple days ago and wonder of wonders, did “re-energize” my laptop.

I don’t know how much longer this old girl is going to last, but at least now I have a little more time, and can shoot out a couple more blogs using good old Windows 7.

I sure hope everyone out there is doing well, thanks for listening and Merry Christmas.

  1. Oh my goodness Doug. I wondered why I hadn't seen a post from you lately... I'm so sorry to hear of all you have been going through. As careful as we are, COVID has a way of reaching us; it's a real kick in the a**. I'm glad to hear you are under a doctor's care for your jaw issues. Fingers crossed it's not an infection; but if it is, antibiotics should take care of it.

The senior center! It's a reminder of how we all need to stay connected. Even the smallest gestures from others can really make a difference in how we feel. And I'm hoping you feel the love and care coming from across the miles from all your faithful readers 🎄🥰

  3. Good to hear from you Doug. I suspected more than just computer issues were at play. Damn Covid. It is back with some punch again. Covid seems to initiate all kinds of symptoms and everybody has a different experience. i hope your doc can help ease symptoms and speed recovery. You did not need the pharmacy issues on top of everything else. Your Sr. Center is amazing. Take care and get well soon!

  4. Not a Merry one for you, but I hope things get better for you soon. You seem to have friends who care, so take advantage of their willingness to help you. Windows 7 is antiquated. It's amazing you can still blog on it. Take care and God bless.

  5. Oh drats! What a horrid way to start December, first the lap top, then the pharmacy shutting down, and Covid. If things truly do happen in threes, I hope you're over the worst of it.
Another reason to be glad you joined the senior center - they've certainly been good for you in a number of ways.
I do hope you have a Merry Christmas with much improved health.

  6. Woohoo! You're back! Boooo! You've been sick! That sucks. Glad your senior center and some friends stepped in to make things better. Health problems are the worst, but computer troubles are a close second for me. They send me quickly over the edge! 😉 Certainly hope you're on the mend and can enjoy some aspect of the holiday season. (Around here that translates to Christmas movies and treats, but not much else!) Take care!

  9. What a lot of crap you've been dealing with, Doug! I knew about the computer and covid but not the jaw issues. It sounds miserable! As usual, you are focusing on the kindnesses and help you've gotten; I admire you so much for your attitude. I would be the biggest grouch on the planet!

To be honest I've had my grouchy moments the last couple weeks, but I've been fortunate to have good friends to talk to too (like yourself) that's helped a lot. Thanks again and I sure hope you and John and your other family have a wonderful Christmas. :^)

  10. Glad you are on the mend from the drastic COVID. It's still out there so we all need to take precautions, but one can still get it. Taking good care of yourself helps you mend.

As for the Windows 7 machine, Gigi is right, it's not a good thing to have. None of the computing world is keeping up with it, which means all safeguards are gone and lots of applications just won't run with it.

I learned my lesson about keeping up-to-date with computer operating systems with a MacBook Pro that I loved. I wanted to keep using the applications on it so didn't update the OS until one day it just wouldn't operate the applications I did love because there was no way to upgrade them. Don't get to that point. Get the new machine set up. You'll love it, just like I loved my new MacBook and which I now keep updated with every new OS.

    1. Thank you dkzody, some tough truths here but honestly, I needed to hear it. I've got to stop fooling myself, I know how unprotected my old laptop is. Well, the important thing is I do have a new laptop; it's the same size screen but it weighs next to nothing compared to my Toshiba which is just very strange to me. At least I've got a project for the New Year! Thank you again and I sure hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday.🙂

  11. Happy Solstice Doug! Daylight will now start to increase, hopefully along with your luck. So sorry to hear about your COVID and TMJ afflictions. I hope they are soon over with. Also, too bad about your pharmacy closing. Did you ask if the new one makes deliveries? It's something my sister takes advantage of now that she no longer drives. How nice of the senior centre to check in with you and to bring treats! Oh, and I LOVE the feather decorations on that tree! So glad you've back and reporting from the teepee. 🥰

    1. Florence, you're so sweet thank you my friend! As a matter of fact, this new Giant Eagle pharmacy supposedly does deliver but I don't think it's going to be easy. They seem to service a pretty giant area. I need to look into something called Express Scripts, a mail delivery service my insurance supposedly covers. I sure do miss that Corner Drug store! Anyway, thank you for the good wishes and it is very nice to hear from you my friend. Happy Solstice to you as well, haha. And I very much look forward to your next wonderful blog! 🙂👍

  16. Sorry to hear ... you had Covid once before, didn't you? Our son in NJ just got Covid for the second time. It's definitely still going around, so everybody . . . get your shots! Anyway, sounds like you've turned the corner, so hope you get well soon.

And you're right, I did have it once before (I lost my sense of taste for a couple weeks) but it wasn't as long-lasting or harsh as this round. Sure am sorry to read about your son, the holidays couldn't be worse timing. Hope he recovers pronto.

  17. Good Gosh, if it is not one thing, it's another! I know Covid is racing around here and most are down about a week or more with what has been described to me as severe body aches everywhere. When we got our Covid shot, the pharmacy accidentally defrosted RSV instead of flu. We got both and it was meant to be. Our smallest grandchild had a bout of RSV with temperatures up to 106! Aren't you glad you were vaccinated so it wasn't worse!!!
So happy to hear the Senior Center is looking out for you. But now the mouth thing - hope it clears up soon. That has to be painful. Here's to a healthier new year! Hope you can keep the internet working with your computer!

    1. Thanks Miss Merry, you sure are right about the covid spread this season but in all honesty I'm having a tough time beating its long-term effects. I sure am sorry to read about your youngest grandchild, I didn't even know kids got RSV. As for me, I didn't get the chance to get vaccinated this year I should probably schedule that! Hope you & your family have a bright & Merry Christmas, I am looking forward to your next post :^)

  19. DOUG! Welcome back, my friend. I checked everyday--just assumed it was "technical difficulties" with the computer situation. Bummer about the pharmacy closing. Don't you hate it when things like that happen just when you've got a comfortable routine? I looked at your area online and, wow, I was surprised at how few pharmacies there are in that immediate area. The mail order ExpressScripts should work out for you IF your meds are mostly settled and routine (few changes). But, I always really prefer an actual pharmacy I can walk into if needed. Supermarket pharmacies are usually pretty good, too. Keep us posted.

Thanks again for your supportive words here (and for not giving up on me just yet)! I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.

  23. Hi Doug, When I first looked at this post I saw the word Thursday and thought for a moment it was today. Then I realized it was a week ago. Well, I just now saw your comment on DJan's blog so I know you are still alive. :-) Well, bless your heart. So sorry to hear about the COVID. Is this your first encounter with COVID? I'm happy for you that you've got the laptop running again. Dang, I can only imagine how depressing it would be to discover everything was lost. Maybe this would be a good time to make a backup on a separate hard drive. Amazon has reasonably priced hard drives. Take care and get feeling better soon! Happy New Year to you. John
