A couple months ago when my Uncle Mike (my dad’s younger brother) passed, his family displayed various photos at the service of my uncle and his brothers from their younger years. I was greatly surprised when I saw the one above of my own dad, as I’ve never seen a photo of him this young before.
That’s Dad on the left of course, looking 6-7 years old from 1943. Knowing I had a photo of myself at around the same age in 1967, I thought I’d do a side by side (like I’ve done of Dad & myself before, here). I find it hard to believe these two photos are only 24 years apart.
What I mean is, I’m betting our family wasn’t any wealthier than Dad’s was in the 1940s; but I think in the 1960s there was a greater emphasis placed on the look of success. I remember the story behnd this suit on the right quite well; my mom was so upset with my ‘hobo look’ in my first grade school photos, she said never again and picked out these nifty threads from the 1967 Sears catalog.
Thanks to Google, I was able to look up my suit and the price was $11.99, shirt & tie included (around $90.00 in today’s dollars). I got some good use out of that suit (much to my mom’s delight) as my second grade teacher Mrs. Brown had a thing for us kids dressing up a couple times that year. And in the last week of school, our entire class came to her home for a ‘hot lunch’, girls in dresses, boys in ties.
Mrs. Brown had a son three years older than myself, also named Doug which intrigued me; I’d never met another Doug before. I remember asking him if I could see his room—he said yes—and asking him if he wanted to be friends. He said no. Oh well!
Meanwhile in the present, my tmj has put a real damper on things, my blog writing included. I swear, I’m not looking for sympathy or attention—I just want it to be over. It’s put a halt to things in my life (like going to the senior center) and I’m left with little energy to do anything except apply hot & cold compresses, stare at the tv and wait for things to get better.
I had this three times before—the first was in July 2016, lasting seven months. At the time I had no idea what it was, and wound up spending $3000 on specialists and various oral appliances, all of which did no good. My second bout was a year later and only lasted 6 weeks. My third was horrendous, and went on for over two years.
So far it’s been two weeks and I’m hoping (as I’m sure it was ‘woken up’ by my recent battle with covid) it fades as quickly as it surfaced. Thanks for letting me share and on that note…
Oh my, I had no idea that TMJ could last that long. I do hope this bout is short-lived.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Doug!
Thank you Maebeme, Happy New Year to you too :^)
DeleteHappy New Year to you, too, Doug. I like that suit you wore. It looks nice. You don't resemble your Dad at all. You're much cuter. Just relax, and your TMJ will disappear.
ReplyDeleteHaha, gosh Gigi thank you--but I'm telling you, my dad was got very handsome when he got older (and I didn't). The TMJ is getting better, thank you & Happy New Year to you too. :^)
DeleteYour mom had great taste and you look very handsome and quite proud in your 3-piece suit. TMJ is terrible. A friend has TMJ and he goes to a chiropractor for help when he has a flare-up. Let's hope for a better 2024!
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan, you always say the nicest things! (And yes I was very proud in that suit, haha.) As for the TMJ, I went to a chiropractor too when I had it the third time. It did relieve the symptoms, I may go again. Hope you have a Happy New Year. :^)
DeleteDug, I'm so sorry about your TMJ flare-up. Flare-ups are never good - and worse when they happen during a holiday. But we seem to have little control over these things. I do hope it clears up soon. Having a medical issue myself at the moment, but not going to go into it here. Wishing you a HEALTHY SAFE AND HAPPY 2024!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rian, and I'm so sorry about your own health issue. I hope you'll share on your own blog. I agree about the 'holiday flare up', honestly the timing was terrible but what can you do. I very much hope you have a Happy New Year my friend :^)
DeleteI do hope your flareup goes away very soon. And I too enjoyed seeing you all dressed up like that. Let's hope that 2024 will be a very good year for all of us! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks very much DJan, your words are much appreciated. I hope you & SG have a Happy New Year. :^)
DeleteHi Doug! I'm so sorry to hear about your TMJ problems, especially over the holidays. Can your doctor give you something like prednisone to help get the inflamation down? It's awful that you have to deal with this for such a long time. I hope it goes away soon.
ReplyDeleteI love those pictures. You were such a cute little guy! It's fun to compare family photos like that. You do resemble your Dad. Isn't it mind blowing to see the prices from those years!
Please take care of yourself and I hope you feel much better soon!
Hi Bonnie--thanks very much for your feedback, and this was surprising to read--I DID ask about the prednisone a couple days ago. (I took it in 2019 and found it effective--my pcp told me it would interfere with my high BP meds.) You're pretty smart! Thanks for the kind words about my early photos, I do like comparing myself to my dad. I hope all is good with you and it sure is nice seeing you again! :^)
DeleteI'm hopeful that all of the children in your class were able to participate in the teacher's dress up and go to lunch at her house event. What about children whose parents couldn't afford $11 for a new suit of clothes? Were they excluded? Or, did your teacher work to get the clothes for the children? This sort of thing can be very traumatic for children who are left out.
ReplyDeletedkzody, I loved your comment here as you make such a good point. I'm honestly surprised we did have a class that could afford to dress up, but one boy in our class named Leslie was very poor and I remember him getting clothing gifts at Christmas (that I'm pretty sure came from Mrs. Brown). Believe me, she was a wonderful, thoughtful person and wouldn't have let anyone be apart because of no dress clothes.
DeleteI'm so glad to hear that...I taught in a program (high school) that taught professional dress for both sexes. We had a clothes closet with appropriate clothes that the students could borrow or just take and keep, it was up to them. If you require something, you really have to make it available for all students. Sounds like your Mrs. Brown was ahead of her time in watching out for all of you.
DeleteI kept coming back, same Doug time, same Doug channel. No Doug. I had a feeling you were not doing well. I'm sorry to read that I was right.
ReplyDeleteDebby, you're both funny & kind, thank you. I'm getting there....another week. Hope you & Tim have a Happy New Year.
DeleteDoug, have you ever used TENS therapy for your TMJ? I found it very helpful for muscle issues.
DeleteDebby I have--I bought a TENS unit (with the various muscle patches) back in 2020 but they're very hard on the face and my doctor recommended I stop using it on there. It's funny you mention this, I was just looking at it last night when I was digging out my heated face wrap. But thank you for the suggestion.
DeleteI hope that TMJ problem resolves soon. Have you considered seeing an oral surgeon?
ReplyDeleteThank you Joanne--yes I actually met with a couple oral surgeons the first time I had this, both said I was 'near the tipping point' but told me the joints were still strong and it could bring further problems down the road. I've learned since then it's just a waiting game. Thanks for your kind thought, i hope you have a Happy New Year.
DeleteI got my first suit in 7th grade. My mother made sure it was big enough, so I would grow into it. I never did. I think I wore it all of one or two times. Ah well. Hope your tmj gets better, and have a great 2024!
ReplyDeleteHaha--Tom I think a lot of guys got their first suit around the same time as you. We used to have 'Dress Up Day' in junior high and I had no suit to wear until my junior year, I bought it myself with my first job. Thanks for the good wishes, and Happy New Year to you as well--hope we see another blog from you soon :)
DeleteSorry to hear you are still struggling with your TMJ. Have you tried meditation? I use the Honest Guys meditation videos on YouTube. I'm actually having some minor TMJ myself (nothing as bad as yours) as a result of a bad case of Tech Neck (actually a thing!) I also discovered TMJ can be exacerbated by sleeping on your stomach, which is my preferred position. Hoping you get straightened out real soon! Guess you haven't had a chance to wear your new cool red shoes yet? And I'm still looking forward to your report on Mickey D's. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteBobi, you are a kind, helpful soul--I will definitely check out some meditation videos (I do use several 'TMJ stretching' videos on youtube and find them helpful. Right now I've got muscles bunched up on the left side of my face that are frozen there.) You're exactly right about sleeping on your stomach, I had to train myself to stop that a couple years ago--and YES tech-neck is a very real agitator for tmj. As for my red shoes, no I haven't got to wear them yet! Haha, I will in Feb! Happy New Year to you too!
DeleteAll this time I was thinking you were happily getting your new laptop up and running, but instead you were/are suffering. I'm so sorry and wish a magic cure could be found. You were a cute little boy with your suit and tie and a missing tooth.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much River, you're very kind. It's not really suffering, more like something to get angry and grumble about (what I've been doing). Boy do I feel guilty about that new laptop, it's still sitting in a box in the corner of my bedroom. Happy New Year my friend :^)
DeleteRiver has captured my thoughts exactly! So sorry about the TMJ. Hope it soon leaves, never to return.
ReplyDeleteThank you Florence and yes, never to return! I hope you had a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year too. I'm looking forward to the next installment of Buzz & Flutter :^)
DeleteI'm so sorry TMJ has you down. I hope it leaves very soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you Miss Merry, much appreciated. Happy New Year. :^)
DeleteHi Doug, I was hoping your TMJ was better, I am sorry. Goodness, look at you and your Dad! So adorable.I remember dressing up for class photos in primary school but my Mum knew it was hopeless to ask me to after that. Whatever I happened to put on that day!😆 Take care Doug and I hope you are feeling better soon.❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin
Thank you Robin and thanks for the smile in regards to stopping dressing up after primary school, trust me you were not alone! I appreciate your good wishes and I hope you and Chuck have a happy New Year. 🙂🫶
DeleteI am so sorry you are going through another flare up. My trigeminal neuralgia is well controlled with medication and I couldn’t imagine my life if it stopped working. For our “field trip” in first grade we went to our teacher’s farm and got to pet cows, and eat our sack lunches. Hope you are better soon! Joyce
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Joyce, I'm so sorry you have to deal with trigeminal neuralgia--a few years ago (when I first got tmj) they thought I might have that. I know how severe that can get. The only treatment for my outbreaks is time. Anyway, what a sweet memory of a first field trip! It's amazing what we can remember if we put our minds to it. :^)
DeleteHow weird that I was sure I commented on this post yesterday, but it didn't work. (or I didn't press the button?) Anyway, I'm upset that you are having this d*mn problem again; I hope it doesn't last long at all! It is getting in the way of the activities and friendships that you've come to enjoy. You need to get back to your social life, Doug! I love both those photos and was mostly dressed up for picture day too--perhaps our parents felt that it proved we were well taken care of.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Margaret, and I'm sorry if you had to comment twice (but I appreciate it as I enjoy your feedback very much). But it's a definite Blogger issue; some people's comments on here get lost, I have no idea why. Anyway, I do feel the tmj trying to better, a nursing friend of mine said this was a sure symptom of 'long covid'. And thanks for the kind words about the photos--you're exactly right about the dressing up then. :^)
DeleteWhat adorable little guys! Sorry to hear of the jaw issues - my husband was terribly troubled with something similar with it for a while - our dentist adjusted the way a couple teeth fit together (by shaving them down?) and it went finally, but I know it can be agonizing and that there are many different causes that are poorly understood. Warm regards and happy new year,
ReplyDeleteCeci
Thanks very much Ceci---and thanks for sharing that about your husband, I'm so sorry he went thru something like this too and I HAVE heard of shaving teeth down (according to tmj.org they're now recommending people don't do that). I'm 100% sure mine is caused from a chronic inflammation I developed from covid, I just need to give it time. Hope you and your family have a Happy New Year :^)
DeleteHi Doug, I was just looking at DJan’s Eye on the Edge and saw your comment. I clicked over here and found your “end of the year” post. First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for your replies to comments. I just read your reply on the previous post and wanted to say thank you for so many kind words. Doug, as a retired teacher, I still enjoy giving grades to other people. 😊 You get A+ from me for replying to comments on your blog. Well, I enjoyed today’s post: Happy New Year: Looking back … I enjoyed your comparison of photos. I like to do that kind of thing. My only disappointment was Mrs. Brown’s son, Doug, saying NO when asked if he wanted to be friends. I just can’t imagine it. 😊Next, I had to look up TMJ. The next 3 letters that came to mind: OMG. So sorry to hear about all the suffering. If your previous 3 experiences with TMJ have anything positive to offer, it must be that you recovered in each case. I send you best wishes and hope that a recovery will come quickly on this current case. I truly enjoy your blog and hope you will continue to publish as we go forward. All the best to you from Seattle. John
ReplyDeleteHi John! Thanks so much for these very kind words--I've read what you wrote here 3 times now and you made me chuckle every time. I very much appreciate that grade in regards to my own responses, as I wonder if people see those (or if it bothers them). I just want people (like yourself) to know how much I appreciate you stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up with everryone else's blogs, have fallen a bit behind, just preoccupied with the covid & tmj. But it's just like you said, it made a full recovery before & will again. I hope you have a Happy New Year John, and thanks again for brightening my day. :^)
DeleteHi again Doug! You are the best with kind replies! And, thank you for visiting me again today and leaving another kind, interesting comment. It makes all the difference (to me at least) when people leave a comment that shows they actually looked at/read the post. You know, some folks will just say something like "nice post." 😊 You noticed that the brochure I posted today was addressed to a lady, Ella Schilling, in Pittsburgh, PA., and that address is only 15 minutes or so from you. Wow, what a coincidence! Sometimes it's a small world. Thank you, Doug, for brightening my day again! 😊 John
