Dad & Mom were married on this date, August 7, 1958. It was also my mom’s 18th birthday, and 2 weeks after Dad’s 21st birthday.
Even though Mom was legally an adult, her mother refused to give her blessing until Mom signed a note promising she’d wait a decent amount of time (I think a year) before having her first child.
Grandma B didn’t want anyone wrongly thinking these two got married young because they HAD to.
By the age of 30, Mom had 5 kids (with a sixth one coming 5 years later). I’ve written about them here so much before, anything I say now would just be repeating myself.
But I’ve never shared these two photos; the top one is pretty faded and the bottom one (Mom’s 30th birthday)…. I look like a damn maniac. Sorry everyone.
Happy Birthday Mom, I love & miss you
What beautiful photographs Doug - they really are special - thank you for sharing them . I can hear in your words how much you miss both your parents - they did incredibly well to marry so young and stay together
ReplyDeleteAnd you haven’t changed a bit !
Siobhan x
Haha, thank you Siobhan--much appreciated! 🤪
DeleteGreat pictures, Doug. I also am glad they had such great birthdays back then.
ReplyDeleteThank you DJan. 🙂
DeleteHappy Birthday to your mom! And Happy Anniversary to Both! Don't you just love old pics. I think I have one taken on my 7th of 8th birthday with my family and cousins. I love that pic - even though my brother has punched holes in my eyes in the pic at some point. (ha! I'll try to find it). Your mom was only 18 - can't imagine, thought my 22 was young... ; )
ReplyDeleteRian my lovely friend, thank you for the nice words and the chuckle--I hope you can share that old photo! And I would say 22 is still pretty young, I very much enjoyed seeing your own wedding photo. :^)
DeleteAhhh, Doug! This is a wonderful photo! Your mom so happy and your dad so proud! I love old photos! As for the second photo, you do indeed look like you are being electrocuted! But it is wonderful, too! Thanks for sharing! D
ReplyDeleteDi, thanks so much! You are exactly right about my mom, she often told us how happy she was on that day--and haha I told you I looked mental in that second photo :^) Thanks again my friend.
DeleteSuch youngsters! My parents were married on August 7, 1954 at the ages of 22 and 26. I love your face in the second photo! Fun and quirky, Doug. Didn't we all make funny faces in pictures? I know I did. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret! My gosh that's wild your parents were also married on this day. Maybe that's why you and I are such good friends. 🙂
DeleteHi Doug, such wonderful photos. You all look adorable. I love that your parents got married on your Mum’s birthday. Double celebration. My parents were married in October of 1957 at 22 and 24 years of age. Take care Doug.❤️

Thank you for the lovely comment Robin, and sharing your own. I very much enjoyed seeing your own photos of your mom, it helped inspire me to share these. 🙂❤️
DeleteMy folks were married in 1936 when dad was 32 and mum 28.
ReplyDeleteIt was 4 years before my big sister made an appearance, and another 5½ before I popped up – well, there was a war going on between our appearances.
My gosh Peter, that amazes me. My dad wasn't even born until 1937. At least your folks had a few years of bliss to themselves! 🙂
DeleteWhat a wonderful picture! And they are so young and happy! I think you resemble your mom! I love the birthday picture, too. What wonderful keepsakes and memories.
ReplyDeleteI will say my oldest was born 10 months after we were married. When we announced her pending arrival there was a lot of finger counting - right in front of us, lol!!!
Haha thank you Miss Merry, and too funny about the 10 month baby--my older brother was born 10 months 2 weeks after our parents wedding, so Mom & Dad didn't make it a whole year :^)
DeleteWhat a sweet tribute! Your mom was very pretty and it looks like she was quite fashionable too. In the second photo, she reminds me of Tammy Wynette who also died way too young.
ReplyDeleteBobi, thank you so much and gosh I wish my mom was alive to hear the Tammy Wynette comparison; she would've loved that! I know I do! :^)
DeleteYou had such good looking parents. My mom and dad were married August 4th, 1951 and my mom's birthday was August 10th. On the marriage day, mom was 20 and dad was 25. My mom had a grandmother that wanted to break them up. But my grandmother liked my father and the marriage was by a Justice of Peace in Jeffersonville, GA.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann, and I think it's interesting, the similarities with our parents wedding stories. If we didn't have stubborn parents, we might not be here!
DeleteYou look like a wild child...but I bet you weren't.
ReplyDeleteHaha--I was just an 8 year old boy who liked to mug for the camera. :^)
DeleteWonderful photos. Your parents are very attractive. However, your mother's hair in that photo with all of the children! How did she ever manage to keep that "do" and take care of a home and all of you children???
ReplyDeletePerhaps, like my sister, who had a similar do, she went once a week to the hairdresser, had the style back-combed to the nth degree and then sprayed until every hair was pressed into place.
I never did understand that style and would tease my sister that insects could create an entire universe in there and she would never know it!
Thank you for the nice words (and the chuckle) dkzody, I was just talking about this with an old friend last night. Yep, just like your sister my mom went to the beauty parlor EVERY Saturday morning for her hairdo. She'd drop my sister & I off and we'd meet her at Mary Jane's Salon 2 hours later. My dad was a musician back then, always played on the weekends, she'd accompany him, often with a bigger hairdo than this!
DeleteWonderful photos! Your mom looks so young in both photos. As for the look on your face, I'm pretty sure there is a photo of every kid with that wide eyed, wacky grin. In our family, it was always accompanied by bunny ears over someone's head. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Maebeme, you're very kind! 🙂
DeleteThose are beautiful pictures
ReplyDeleteBeth
Thanks Beth. :^)
DeleteGigi Hawaii. Beautiful photos. That’s a lot of kids. A dynasty. Happy memories.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi 🙂
