I think I know what’s going on… gosh darn it

Since last Wednesday I’ve been experiencing a full-on relapse of my long-covid inflammation.  Crackling in my head, face & neck.  Burning in the mouth and cheekbones.  Pressure & inflammation in my left eyeball, left temple, side of skull.

It starts out sore when I awaken, slowly rises during the morning, and by 1-2pm I’m laying on my bed with the lights off & door closed.  By 4pm it’s pretty intense.  It dies down by 6-7pm and settles into my neck, which I try to manage with a couple of pain patches until bedtime.

It’s been months since I’ve experienced such severe symptoms, and this started the day after my recent dental appointment last Tuesday.  I went in for a marathon session of 5 fillings and front tooth restore, a 3 hour appointment.  I should’ve spoken up and said I was just getting over 20 months of cranial inflammation, can we spread the fillings out, but I didn’t.  The next morning I could barely move my mouth, it was so stiffened & sore.

Was it all the drilling and propping my mouth open for 3 hours, or the 4 injections in my gums?  I kept flinching and he said “Let’s switch from novocaine to articaine, it’s a lot more potent.”

2 weeks earlier, I sat in that same dental chair and the same dentist picked & scraped at my teeth & gumline for 90 minutes, a “rigorous dentist cleaning”.  Yet I was completely fine afterwards.

I can’t help but feel that this 3 hour dental thing re-ignited the long covid inflammation somehow.  I didn’t know that was even possible.  And yet here it is.  I was still dealing with mini-relapses daily, but they were mild and only lasted for 30 minutes.  I honestly thought I had this 90% nipped in the bud.  Hopefully this awful flare-up will fade soon.  It’s become painful to talk or chew.

Meanwhile, it’s been 4 weeks since I developed plantar fasciitis on the other end and I continue to hobble like a very old man.  My doctor explained how months of inactivity will cause you to lose strength & flexibility in your plantar fascia, hence my feet & legs giving out on me.

Fair enough, I am starting those shockwave therapy sessions this week and doing daily stretching exercises to get my old self back.  As soon as my face recovers, I’m pain-free and more mobile, I’d love to travel south and visit family.  It’s been almost 2 years since all of this started and I last saw them.

I am getting a little improvement in my feet at night.  I sure wish I’d waited on all that dental work though.  Way too much, too soon.  (I still need those 2 molar implants!)

Here’s my usual disclaimer:  I’m not looking for sympathy, pity, nothing.  It just helps me feel less alone when I share.  I plan to keep posting on here like nothing is wrong.

But when I’m my old self again, I’ll share it with you guys first!  Anyway, I promise my next blog is going to be more upbeat—with lots of food.

Thanks as always for listening.

  1. It's an interesting correlation with the dental work. My son-in-law contracted Covid in 2020 following a dentist appointment. Did the supposition that he contracted it at the dentist office during a procedure (wisdom teeth removal) worsen the effects and cause his long covid? Hmmmm.
I'm sorry, you know that. And lesson learned. Dental appointments in baby steps. Sigh. Does everything have to be a lesson?
Hoping those shockwave treatments do the trick!

  2. Oh, Doug, that blasted long covid! I'm sure that it was aggravated somehow by the dental appointment. There is so much more to learn about Covid and I despair of that research happening with you-know-who in charge. You don't want sympathy but I'm sending you warm hugs and hopes for better days!

    1. Thank you very much Margaret... I just want to kick myself. Wish I had waited on the dental stuff, but I never expected this.

  3. OMG, Dug... I can't believe you are having another bad flare-up of long covid. I had really hoped that was on the way out. Did the dental stuff trigger it? Sure seems like it. Between the long covid, that dental work, and your plantar fasciitis - it's too much. I hope you give yourself time to recoup before doing any further dental work. I myself rescheduled my next lung catscan because it was the same week as my next eye plastic surgery (can only deal with one problem at a time - if that's an option). Take care of yourself... sending more healing vibes, thoughts, prayers, and hugs!

    1. Rian I think what you did was smart. You shouldn't overtax yourself with medical appts, I really wish I had done the same last week. Thanks very much for the vibes & hugs, much appreciated.

  4. Darn it all, you hadn't mentioned Long Covid for awhile so I was hoping the symptoms were mostly abated. I do agree, it sounds like your dental work caused a flare up. Fingers crossed, it is over with quickly.
Good luck with the treatment for your feet. And stay away from the dentist for a bit....unless you can't.

  5. Oh man, I thought you were at least at the edge of the woods and would soon be out of the woods as far as long Covid! What a bummer (could've used a stronger b word here, but don't want to offend anyone. 😉) I never mind reading about health issues. We all have them and it can really be demoralizing when they all pile up at once. I think we all feel alone when that happens. I also think there's value in sharing real world experiences about medical problems which may in turn help one of your readers if they encounter similar problems in the future. And, we all love a happy ending so we'll be looking forward to you finally getting yours real soon!!

  6. Oh, Doug. I am so sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well again. I’ve never even heard of a dental appointment for 3 hours and 5 fillings at one time! Unusual stress like that can certainly trigger all sorts of responses in our bodies. Take really good care of yourself—nourishing your body and your mind. And don’t neglect some human interaction as well. Sometimes we turn away from that when we aren’t our best. But that is also very important to our wellbeing. And remember we’re all out here for you.

  8. Oh man, I thought you were at least on the edge of the Covid woods and will soon be completely out! What a bummer (I really wanted to use the other B word but don't want to offend anyone 😉) We all have rough times when it comes to health issues but it can be really demoralizing when they all pile on at once. I don't mind reading about health problems at all because sharing experiences can be helpful and even though the information may be anecdotal, it still might help someone else facing the same thing. And finally, we all love a happy ending so we're all waiting for yours and hope it's coming soon!

  9. Darn Doug! That is such thoroughly unwelcome news!! I had hoped the new Doctor you are seeing would have some great curative treatment that would put your long covid attacks behind you! I wish you well and I look forward to your post reporting your old self is back. Remember there are a lot of us out here pulling for you!

  10. Doug, it's clear we all appreciate reading your messages no matter what the topic! I'm so sorry to hear of the relapse. COVID intricacies are very strange, and I sometimes wonder if doctors are noting (and maybe sharing) their findings for the greater good/use. Don't know if we're organized enough for that to be the case but it could be handy knowledge. Hang in there! Rooting for improved days for you. Kim in PA

  11. I'm so sorry to hear you're going through a flare-up like this, that sounds incredibly frustrating. It's so easy to look back and wish you had done things differently, like with the dental work, but it's hard to know in the moment. Thank you for sharing so honestly. I think a lot of people feel that way about just getting things off their chest. It's a great reminder that it's okay to feel that way. I'm really hoping the shockwave therapy helps with your foot soon and that this flare-up passes quickly so you can get back to being your old self. I'm looking forward to your next post with lots of food.

  12. I can't imagine enduring a 3 hour dental appointment, the very thought gives me chills. It's frustrating that so little is known about LC, so that triggering treatments and events are hard to avoid. Being a pioneer sucks sometimes.

Hope the shock wave treatment helps, I need to look that up, although my ambition is not to ever have plantar issues ever again.

    Warmest regards,
    Ceci

    1. Ceci, can't tell you how much I appreciate this, what you said. Thank you. I did have that first shockwave treatment today and it was painful in places but does give me hope. The facial stuff, inflammation and pain, it died down before all I can do is hope it does again. But I very much appreciate you letting me share this stuff. And I hope you never get plantar issues again either!
