Wheat Chex, Chocolate Chex, Honey Nut Chex, Peanut Butter Chex, Cinnamon Chex, Blueberry Chex. (There's also a Strawberry Vanilla Chex, but it's not at my store.)
I have to say I enjoyed both the Chocolate Chex and Peanut Butter Chex cereals very much.
It was only after I finished both boxes that it occurred to me, why didn't I have a bowl of both cereals mixed together? "Hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!" "Well, you got your peanut butter on my chocolate!"
Remember those old Reese's Peanut Butter Cup commercials from the '70s?
Anyway, the Blueberry Chex was last on my list. After having a bowl, I called Diana and told her I felt sort of funny. She asked what I meant. I said I had an overwhelming urge to wrap a shawl around my shoulders, buy a tweety bird and take up knitting. The cereal made me feel like Granny from those old Warner Bros cartoons.
Diana asked what the ingredients of the cereal were. I said "The others are hearty corn or wheat. This one is rice lace, dusted with Blueberry Powder and Rosemary Extract. If that doesn't sound like little old lady ingredients, then I don't know what does."
While Diana rolled her eyes, I shivered and told her I had to go. I wanted to make a hot cup of tea and watch my story, then look at old photos and organize my pill bottles.
Not wanting to be a Grannydug again anytime soon, I went back to my regular Corn Chex (and Grape Nut Flakes, that's been my favorite since I was 12). But a couple days ago, I was at the store in the cereal aisle, and saw the Blueberry Chex, and told myself "Just buy the darn cereal Doug, it's not made for grannies only."
I headed up front and got in Jessie's aisle (the 21 year old checker who likes to tease and call me 'Boomer', I wrote about her before here).
Jessie smiled at me, and asked how my day was going. She's a nice young woman. When she got to the Blueberry Chex, she said "Oh, you'll really like this." I said "Do you like it?" She said "No I've never tried it. But it's the only cereal my grandmother eats, she loves it!"

Dug, we seldom eat dry cereal... used to like Quaker Oatmeal squares before I went gluten-free. Now I do get GF Honey Nut Cheerios for an occasional treat. But mostly I eat oatmeal almost every morning. DH likes pancakes, waffles, or eggs. But we have never tried Chex cereal (I imagine the rice based would be gluten free). And not sure what 'little old lady ingredients' are?... maybe Bran Flakes?? (and a shawl and tweety bird sound good to me!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Rian and I know this was silly, but true. I'm just used to heartier cereals, this one is very delicate. And I would hardly consider you a little old lady! 😊 ❤️
DeleteGrapenuts Flakes, heh? Terry loves those and has eaten them for all the years I can find them. The stores in Fresno quit carrying them a couple of decades ago. I'm sure it had something to do with needing shelf space for kids' cereals.
ReplyDeleteWe found the cereal in a very shi-shi grocery store in San Mateo while grocery shopping for our kids. This was probably around 2010, same time we had an apartment in San Francisco. The box was over $5, but it was for Terry so I always bought a couple of boxes for him when I shopped there. I also found the cereal in the Embarcadero Safeway in San Francisco. Again, over $5 a box.
Fast forward to a few years ago back in Fresno...I found Grapenuts Flakes now in two stores in town. Very pricey stores, and sure enough, the price for the cereal was now over $6. Okay, I can still do this for him. And I did for probably 10 years or more. Then the price started dropping and is now just around $4.89 a box.
But, my story does not end there. Terry, in the meantime had started eating FiberOne FLAKES. They could be found in a few stores in town, no big deal, and not super expensive. Then, they disappeared, leaving only the bits and bites that look like cattle feed which Terry DID NOT like. No more FiberOne. Until, one day, there they were in this very expensive shi-shi grocery store in the most expensive part of Fresno. This store had the flakes, and the price? $9.99. You can probably guess, I bought two for Terry. And I continue to do so.
The grocer says they don't know how long they can get them as they have been told the demand is low and the company may stop producing them.
My goodness, that's quite a tale dkzody--and some real love for Terry! I don't eat cereal as often as I used to, probably no more than 3 days a week. But my store has ALWAYS carried Grape Nuts Flakes. It's a big box, but I just bought one a week ago and it was $5.59. All the brand names are over $5.00 now. I tried the generic Corn Chex a couple months ago, but it just isn't as good as "real" Chex. Ok now I'm craving cereal :^)
DeleteTerry has cereal 5 mornings a week. On Saturday he makes pancakes (or any day of the week if our granddaughter is here) and always enough to have leftovers on Tuesdays. The man is very set in his ways. Oh, and each day of the week he has a different cereal. There is diversion from this routine when we travel. He never eats cereal when we are away from home.
Deletedkzody, you now have me craving pancakes :^) Darn it, I can't go back out there--I just got home from a haircut and trip to the market and we are in the middle of a snowstorm. Anyway, Terry is my kind of guy :^)
DeleteI didn't know there were that many varieties of Chex; I've only eaten it in Chex mix: rice, corn, wheat and bran. The blueberry type (with rosemary?) sounds very different. Like a prior commenter, I don't eat cold cereal. I'm a muffin with peanut butter or bagel with cream cheese person. :) I'm finding more and more that my tastes are showing my advanced age.
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret, gosh I didn't realize I was such a Chex -and- cold cereal expert! Well, when I worked I only ate cold cereal 1-2 times a week. I miss bagels greatly, but my jaw cannot chew those anymore. As for your 'advanced age', I honestly think you're more young at heart than a lot of people I know :^)
DeleteBoy, you are living the high life.
ReplyDeleteI have never eaten Chex in my life, of any flavor or ingredient. I must say that you didn’t inspire me to start.
I still eat (now and then) and enjoy Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups. They were nowhere to be seen in Oz until about 15, 20 years ago when they were suddenly everywhere. I remembered them from time I spent in your country, so I grabbed some. They were (and still are) as good as I remembered.
Haha thanks Peter, wow--can't imagine never eating Chex 😋
DeleteI buy cereal because I consider it healthy but I really don't like it so I rarely eat it. I may be spoiled. I prefer peanut butter toast and chocolate milk but I rarely have chocolate milk because I don't consider it healthy. Yes, I'm kinda quirky. 😂 Enjoy that blueberry chex and don't worry about it unless you find yourself ordering that shawl.😉😂
ReplyDeleteBobi you do make me laugh out loud, thank you! I'm going to go fix myself a slice of peanut butter toast right now 😂
DeleteI was a big fan of Grape-nuts cereal as a kid, but these days I generally eat granola with yogurt and sometimes berries. The blueberry Chex additives sound bizarre....and I'm a grandma (though no shawl yet).
ReplyDeleteMaebeme, I loved Grape Nuts as a kid, but couldn't eat it now or it would break my teeth! I do miss granola though... :^) As for shawls, it's like 12F in Pittsburgh right now and I'm going to go grab a throw.
DeleteI think that when I was young we only ate corn flakes and cheerios. I don't remember anything else. I am partial to raisin bran and my grandkids love Lucky Charms (which I think are candy, not breakfast). My husband does not eat cold cereal at all! It is amazing to see all the different variations of cereals. We stick t basics. One year I bought the Count Chocula Lucky Charms for halloween (they are chocolate). It was a firm no.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Miss Merry--growing up, my dad would only buy those "Snack-Pack" cereals in little boxes, with 6 of us we would go thru a regular box in one day. I don't think I've had Lucky Charms in 55 years and I have NEVER tasted Count Chocula--though now I'm tempted to look for it! :^)
DeleteThe only time I eat chex cereals is when I have leftovers from making Chex mix at Christmas. One box each rice, corn, wheat. But we like it, but usually go back to Cheerios or shredded wheat squares. I like your blog. Usually just lurk.
ReplyDeleteHi Dianne, thank you for sharing and lurk away :^) I used to love the homemade Chex mix at Christmas, I don't think I've had that since the 1980s... now I'm tempted to make some. Thanks again, I hope I hear from you again.
