Recovery from the flu, love in the afternoon & I can't forget LC now

Friday morning I awoke with a damp undershirt and wet hair; took my temp, 98.6.  I guess I was cured?  Got out of bed, woozily stumbled into my kitchen and made a cup of coffee.  Went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth... I was out of breath.  Went back into the bedroom, began pulling my germy blankets off my bed.  Had to stop & catch my breath.  Sat down for a break, turned on my tablet and read a morning email from my sister Shawn asking how I was doing.

I said I was recovered but pretty weak and had trouble catching my breath.  She said she was worried I may have developed pneumonia.  I didn't know how to respond to that.  As the morning moved into afternoon I got progressively pooped and canceled my plans for the day.  I read mostly and slept, and was in bed by 8pm.

This morning I awoke around 4:30am with a SOPPING WET undershirt, soaked bedsheets and a dripping head.  I guess yesterday's "break" was only a trial run.  I scrambled out of that wet bed and into the shower, put on some fresh clothes and stripped off my sheets.  Sprayed my mattress topper with Tide Sanitizing Spray (I love this stuff) then pounded that new topper for good measure, flipped it and turned it and remade the bed with my favorite crisp Indian cotton sheets.

Feeling a lot better than the day before, I sprinted down the hall to the laundry room (it was empty and no one was on the calendar until noon).  Took all my germy bedclothes down there, got some hot suds going and came back to my apartment and made a cup of coffee.  Sat down on the couch and turned on my TV for the first time in a week when I heard a knock at my door.

When I opened it, there was Sally--a special needs woman who lives on the third floor.  She's in her late fifties and is a tiny thing, not even 5 feet tall.  She was holding a red envelope and smiling, and gave it to me.  It was this nice Valentines Day card above.  I read it and thanked her for the sweet card, and said "Sally I wish I could give you a hug, but I've been sick with the flu all week and just made a recovery this morning.  When you have a cold you're only contagious for 3 days, but when you get the flu you're contagious for a week."

She nodded okay while slowly tip-toeing backward.  I know Sally pretty well, she's a real germaphobe.  Good for her.

After Sally left, I headed back to the laundry room to put my washed bedclothes in the dryer.  The right side of my face began to hurt and swell along the jawline.  Hello LC (long covid).  I felt like it's saying "Hey pal, I gave ya a break but you didn't think I was gone for good, did ya?"  Nope.  Came back to my apartment, got an ice pack for my lower face, worked on my shopping list for tomorrow.  I'm craving crusty rolls and polish sausage and hot mustard, potato chips and maybe some grapefruit soda.  This has been a long week.  I'm having microwave chocolate cake tonight.

Finally, turned on Peacock to search for something good to watch and found this movie that was just playing in theaters at Christmas, Song Sung Blue starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.

They play a real life couple from Milwaukee, Claire & Mike Sardina who fell in love and formed a Neil Diamond tribute band that lasted from 1989-2006.  How is it I've never heard of this before?  I just finished watching this and it's so special, so wonderful my heart's about ready to burst.  I love these two.

I hope this wasn't too boring a read, I really wanted to thank everyone for your kind comments to my flu-post earlier this week.  It really came out of nowhere, but I suppose things like the flu always does.

I hope everyone reading this is enjoying their Valentine's Day, thanks again.

  1. Dug, waking up soaking wet is usually an indication that your body has just been through a lot and has come through... at least that's how it's always seemed to me. So hopefully, the flu has taken it's leave, but possibly left you weak and tired from it's onslaught. And of course the old LC would take advantage and raise it's ugly head. Take it easy for a day or so. You can get a relapse from the flu if you're not careful. I did back in 1997... went back to work too soon and was back sick for a month. And I'm glad your neighbor Sally knocked on your door. I hoped your neighbors looked after each other. Enjoy your microwave chocolate cake tonight. I have one of those too... it's a chocolate cake in a mug... and it's good!

    1. Thanks very much Rian, I think flu-wise I'll be all good Monday. The LC is really acting up but I'm taking that as a sign of recovery. And yes, my cake is in a mug too! 😋

  2. That's a great sign that you've been able to do so much and that your appetite is back. What is this microwave chocolate cake? Sounds easy and tasty. I've been concerned about you, especially since you live alone. Me too--and I hate being sick when there's no one else around. I feel helpless. Anyway, that STUPID LC! How irritating to get over (mostly) the flu and then have it show up. It needs to go away!!

    1. Thanks Margaret! The chocolate cake is "Cake in a Mug", all you need is 3 tablespoons of water or milk and a big mug. It comes with frosting and is surprisingly good :^) Thanks for the kind words, even with the LC it's been a good day for me.

  3. Glad you're on the mend! Now I want to make a mug cake (just found a recipe for a red velvet version) and see that movie. Kate Hudson got an Oscar nomination for it but we don't have Peacock. Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. So glad to read that your flu bug is going away. I've been worried about you! But pretty angry that LC thinks he can hang around. I hope you can take it easy this weekend and maybe kick both of them to the curb.

    1. Thank you Miss Merry, I sure hope you're in the pink as well--I'm looking forward to hearing how your dinner went. :^) The LC isn't going anywhere I'm afraid, but I'll take it over the flu any day.

  8. What a relief to hear that you are feeling better, despite your unwelcome visitor LC. Please be careful not to overdo; people are developing pneumonia and other serious things post flu this year, don't want you to be one of them.

    1. Oh really... good to know. Thank you Ceci, much appreciated. I held off walking to the store as it's been raining so hard, wasn't ready to face all that just yet.

  9. Gee, I didn’t get a Valentine’s card, not that I was expecting one. Good for you.

Oh my goodness. You do more work around your home when you’re quite ill than I do when I’m perfectly fine (well, as fine as an 80 year old can be).

I wake up a little damp, but that’s due to the hot nights we’ve been having.

I haven’t seen that film (or even heard of it), and this should not be construed as disparaging it. However, I sort of understand tribute bands (although we could remove hundreds of Elvis tribute acts and the world would be a better place). The thing I don’t get is tribute acts to performers who are still alive and still performing.

    1. Hey Music Man, good to hear from you. All that work I did in here yesterday, I was just anxious to get up and do stuff after being laid up in bed the whole week. As for the movie, I wish you could see it. At first Mike Sardina didn't want to do Neil Diamond, as he was still alive as you pointed out. But his backers insisted he so looked and sounded like Diamond, and he was convinced to do it. It's just a beautiful movie and spilling over with talent & music.

  10. Hi Doug! I've been very concerned about you. OMG ... So glad things seem to be on the improve. I was looking at the other comments above mine and I see one from Robin that is just perfect. Please read her comment again. 😊 Take care, my friend, and a faster recovery to you! John

    1. You're very kind, thanks John! That is funny about reading Robin's comment again, I will do that. I hope things are well with you and by the way John, thank you for your recent comment on my older post. (About us sitting down and having a chat about our bowels.) I read that last week just as my flu was setting in and it gave me the smile I needed. :^)

  12. Very nice to receive a Valentine’s Day card. How thoughtful and sweet. If you can do laundry, then you are doing better than I am. Bad back. I hate bending over the hamper. So, my maid does the laundry. Take care and God bless. Gigi Hawaii

  14. I just started watching Song this evening. It had been on my radar for a week or so and someone on Blammo recommended it so I went for it. It helps that I really like Neil Diamond. Sorry to hear you've been sick. I didn't get it but my eldest, her fellow, and 3 of the people that were coming for Super Bowl tapped out with it.

    2. Yes it is. I didn't even think to see if I was Known or Unknown when I posted. Silly computers, at my age they should recognize my keystrokes. I never had that problem with my Kaypro II. Oh wait that was pre-internet, just like my first computer, a Skilcraft RIC 920 Rock Identification Computer complete with punch cards from the early 70's.

I'm not dated, just well sesoned!
