If there's someone up there listening... how about another 3 day pass?

Last week (Tuesday, Nov 18 to be specific) I awoke feeling well.  I was surprised when I climbed out of bed, looked into the bathroom mirror and my eyes didn't have those post-covid black sockets under them.

I kept my fingers crossed, I was scheduled to get CT scans later that day and it would make things so much better if I could ride the two buses to UPMC without being in too much discomfort.

I continued feeling good that day, even when my neurologist showed me two 'clouds' still in the frontal lobe region from my long covid.

Who cares about clouds, maybe this relapse on September 12 was finally settling down for good.

The next day the good times continued.  I called my barber and asked if she had any openings, it had been several weeks since my last haircut.  She did, and I got a great cut.  The third day, I was still doing great.  I knew I had to take advantage of this, so I showered and dressed first thing, and went downtown to renew my expired driver's license.  This had been weeks overdue.

I awoke Friday morning with some mild burning in my temples, and a very sore neck.  Maybe I slept on it funny and it will fade...  but as the day wore on, the pressure in my head increased, as did the pain in the lower right jawline and mouth.  That damn long covid was fighting it's way back.

By Friday night, the last 3 days seemed like a dream.  At least I made good use of them.

This isn't the first time I got one of those passes.  When all of this began in January 2024 (I am coming up on my 2 year anniversary with this) I was housebound and miserable for 4 months.  Then in May 2024 I got a 3-4 day reprieve, and was able to visit the senior center a couple times and attend a lunch with friends at Red Lobster.  I was happy as a clam, pun intended.

It didn't last, the summer of 2024 was the worst.  I didn't leave my place again for 3 months.  But I got another "weekly pass" in the Fall, and then again in early December.  I was able to attend the Holiday luncheon for Senior Singles at the church next door.

I got a couple more "3 day passes" in February and April, and by May 2025 things had improved enough that I was venturing out again.  I was still fighting extreme fatigue, go out for 2-3 hours, come home and sleep for 3-4, but the head and facial pain was 90% gone.  Aside from getting plantar fasciitis in August, I really believed the "covid head" stuff was nearly gone for good.

Then of course, on September 12 everything came back.  I haven't been to the senior center since.

Anyway, it would've been nice to get a 3 day pass this week so I could spend Thanksgiving with loved ones, but I didn't luck out.  I'm hoping I get a pass next week so I can attend this years Senior Singles Holiday Lunch with my gals Mary and Evie.  I really miss them.

Finally, here's one thing with a happy ending:  a few days ago, I was making a cup of coffee and it tasted like burnt plastic.  I tried another k-cup, same result.  I ran a cup of white vinegar thru my Keurig and activated the deep cleanse.  No change.

My K-Supreme was a month or so past its warranty, so I'd have to purchase another one.  This was my third K-Supreme in 5 years!

But feeling face-sore and cranky, I called Customer Service anyway.  I got a very polite Indian woman named Sky.  I told her what happened, she said "Okay sir, here is what we're going to do.  First I want you to try a different brand k-cup..."   I told her no, I did that already.  She said "Perfect.  Okay, now we're going to operate your machine in clean mode.  Do you have any white vinegar?"

I said "Sky, I did all that this morning.  I'm not wasting anymore time or k-cups on this faulty machine.  And I know it's a month past the warranty, so I'm not expecting you to replace it.  I just wanted someone to know how disappointed I am.  I've been a loyal customer of Keurig for years, but this is ridiculous."

Sky said she was very sorry for the inconvenience, I said thanks for listening.  Fifteen minutes later, she called back and asked for the serial number on my Keurig.  After giving it to her, Sky said they were sending me a new machine, no charge.  I was very surprised, thanked her and asked if I needed to send the bad one back.  She said no, just discard it.

It arrived a couple days ago and boy, my coffee tastes great again.  I hope this one can stick around for awhile.

  2. Sure hope you get to go to the luncheon with your favorite ladies! Those cookies you got last year looked gorgeous. It's nice to hear you got great customer service since it seems pretty rare these days. May your future be filled with multiple 3-day passes!😎

    1. Bobi, I know this post was kind of a drag to read, but you always have the nicest things to say. Thanks so much for your kind words here, it means a lot. And haha yes those cookies--I was just talking to Mary about those! :^)

  3. You deserve so much more than a three day pass, Doug! You did make the best of it though, in spite of the CT scans. :( When things are tough and not going well, it's great to have a positive. A new coffee machine! My Krups is over 30 years old and I've thought about replacing it but am leery of the reliability of the new machines. (with good reason!) Hoping for better health for you, my friend!

    1. Margaret, thank you so much--you're a good friend! I know I share too much regarding the long covid stuff, it's just so frustrating and it helps to vent (and get feedback like yours). And YES in regards to the reliability of new coffee machine. Everytime mine breaks down I get out my old coffeemaker from 15 years ago. Maybe MY next one will be a Krups!

  4. I’m happy too that you had a little reprieve. You have been through the mill with health. I always try be thankful that my situation isn’t as bad as others. I think the social isolation of not feeling well just adds to it. I want out of the house so bad, but can’t handle it right now. Just know that you make a difference in our lives. You’re a great writer and I love reading your blog, as well as others. Joyce

    1. Joyce, thank you. Gosh this was nice on your part. I've always related to you precisely because of the chronic condition you've been dealing with along with the isolation. Your optimism and positive words mean a lot. 🙂

  5. I just googled Keurig K-Supreme, and it costs a pretty penny, at least here it does.
I imagine the penny is a bit less pretty around your way, but it’s still wouldn’t be cheap, I would think.
Talk about good customer service. Two thumbs up.

Are your “3-day passes” regular or random? Whichever it is you have a week to find out. Let us all hope that your lunch comes to pass.

Ah, my regular topic – "several weeks since your last haircut". I’d like to say it’s several years since mine, but I’d be lying. It’s more like several decades. Okay, I’m not the wild man of Borneo, I trim it (them?) myself.

    1. Thanks Peter, those K-Supremes seem to vary greatly in price. Keurig included a 'paid invoice' with mine for $189.99. I never paid that much for mine! More like $129.00. And I see on Amazon you can get one for $109.00. (My last one did come from Keurig, which I think helped my cause.) As for the 3 day passes, yes completely random. They really are weird, I don't understand how they come about so quickly. But I never take them for granted. And thanks for the chuckle, I know you cut your own curly mane--Wild Man from Borneo haha :^)

  6. I'm so sorry you are still dealing with all this. A three day pass is not long enough. And you should be able to have a pass at least once a week! I'm sorry you missed Thanksgiving and I do hope you can attend the singles event. Bummer Bummer Bummer.
I am blown away with the Keurig story! I have a feeling the genuineness of your complaint delivered the nicest way possible and not blaming the poor customer service rep who had nothing to do with the manufacture of the machine just won her heart! Let's hope this machine lasts a lot longer!

    1. Thanks very much Miss Merry, and I keep wanting to ask you how long your own son-in-law dealt with his post-covid. Was it longer than 2 years? I'm afraid to know. Anyway I know I've beat this subject to death, I just wish I could be rid of it once and for all. And thanks for your kind Keurig feedback, I was nice to Sky but I think they saw I was a monthly subscriber to their coffee too, I bet that helped :^)

  7. Not good, you deserve far more than a 3 day pass. I hope that the pain lessens so you can get a visit in with your friends.
I swear they build things to last until a day or two after the warranty runs out. I remember having to replace an over the stove microwave shortly after that period was up. What a pain! Glad you've got a new machine and can enjoy your coffee. At least your taste buds weren't impacted.

    1. Thanks very much Maebeme, well I'm glad I only had to replace a coffeemaker and not my microwave! But yes, I firmly believe today's applicances have a planned expiration date. And thank you for your good wishes, it's much appreciated. :^)

  9. Dug, that's so great about your Keurig. It's Cyber Monday today and Keurig does have some really great specials on their coffee machines. The one we have has lasted several years. It might be time to get a new one... but I do use those rinse filter capsules every week to 2 weeks and they do seem to keep the coffee tasting good.
As for your long covid, I have a question: Did it start not long after a bout with Covid? Just curious... and had you been vaccinated before that? You may have mentioned all this before, but I can't remember. But I am praying that you will get much more than a 3 day pass soon and you can start enjoying your friends at the senior center again.

    1. Thanks Rian--my gosh I totally forgot today was Cyber Monday, I'm glad I don't need a new Keurig :^) By the way, my very first Keurig, a K10-Mini from 2012 still works. I always get it out of storage when my new model breaks down. It doesn't make a strong a brew, but at least it's reliable. As for my long covid condition, yes it started 2-3 weeks after I recovered from covid in December 2023. And I always got every vaccination & booster too. The neurologist I recently saw said he has patients with long covid going on 4 years now, which is scary. Anyway Rian, thank you for your kind prayers. I hope you know your own healing is in mine as well.

  10. I had problems with my Keurig leaking. After my third one started leaking, I gave up. I never occurred to me to call customer service. Nice to know there is still good customer service out there.

Long Covid is so unfair. You have suffered so much. The chronic brain inflammation has caused you so much pain and stress. I do hope that science figures out how to treat this wicked condition.

    1. Thank you Carole, and I'm sorry you've had your own share of Keurig problems. That was my first time ever calling them, but I have a feeling it won't be my last. And thank you very much for the kind wishes regarding this chronic inflammation, I don't have a lot of faith in anything medical out there but I do believe time will heal this wound.

  11. A little off-topic here, but I wanted to pass this information along to you. I don't know what kind of research you have going on in Pittsburgh for long COVID, but I know there are a number of studies being done. A friend of mine is in one out of UCDavis. I just read about what Stanford University Medical is doing on long COVID and thought you might find it of some value. This is the site, through Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DRvjNhzjHai/?img_index=1
