Isn’t this a neat piece of artwork? It’s the Starship Enterprise on canvas in sepia tones, in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Renaissance art.
I got it to hang on the wall opposite my bed, and before you call me a nerd like someone else did today, this is only 18” x 25”. I had originally intended on buying it double in size to hang on the large accent wall in my living room.
Now THAT would’ve been nerdy!
Anyway, earlier today I got an alert on my phone from icanvas.com that my artwork was being delivered and was two stops away. When I went downstairs to wait for it’s arrival, one of my neighbors (who shall remain nameless) was down there, waiting for her food order from Aldi.
I asked how she was doing, and she said fine, then added “But I’d be a lot MORE fine if I had a second powder room and a patio.” She told me she was kidding, her place was big enough already. (She’s right about that, she lives in one of our building’s twelve 2 bedroom units and they are surprisingly roomy—and expensive.) But she couldn’t believe she’d been here ten years already, it wasn’t part of the plan.
When I asked what was the plan, she said she’d only intended to live here for a year after her divorce and sale of her home of 35 years. But 10 years later and she was still here, with the sale from her home still sitting in a savings account.
(Then my artwork arrived, I opened the box to show her—she said it was cool but I was the oldest nerd she knew.)
Anyway, I said “Well, at least that money is earning some nice monthly interest.” She said “What are you talking about? It’s in PNC Bank and doesn’t earn enough interest to report it on my taxes.”
What? I pulled out my smartphone and looked up PNC’s interest rate on their standard savings account. 0.03%. I said “Listen, this is none of my business but you REALLY need to move that into CDs, or an online savings bank like Ally. I keep 2 years worth of living expenses in a Money Market fund that pays me $280.00 monthly. You could make more than double that.”
She said “Don’t you watch the news? Those online banks are failing left & right.” I told her those were a couple banks in Silicon Valley. Online banks are FDIC insured and just as safe as her brick and mortar PNC. Her money should be earning $600.00 a month in interest, easy.
She said “Well, I’d have to call my financial advisor, she’s the one who has my money parked in that account.” I said “Financial advisor! Who is she, your 14 year old granddaughter??”
She laughed and said at least her advisor wasn’t a nerd like me. Gee whiz, she should be!
Just then, our mutual neighbor Sara walked into the lobby and said hi to both of us, and the other one said “Take a look at Doug’s new artwork. If you went out with a man and learned he had this hanging in his apartment, what would you think?”
Sara said “I would think hmm, I met a man who has an interest in art.”
I’m obviously talking to the wrong woman here.
Artwork for one's home is a very personal preference. Your neighbor is just rude, as well as financially ignorant. Oh, well, it's her money.
ReplyDeletedkzody, I honestly don't mind her teasing me--but I hate the idea of her nest egg being eaten up by inflation. But you're right, it's her money!
DeleteWow. Ms. Nameless certainly is losing a bundle every month. Apparently the rest of her financial (?) advisor's clients must be twice as wealthy and getting all the attention.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joanne, she IS losing a bundle--I know I'm too nosy, but I sure hope she took my advice.
DeleteDug, we have very little 'artwork' in our home - mostly pics of family and grandkids... some cross work pictures (one of horses, one of cats, and one of chickens) made by family members or friends and a horse in a stable scene over our bed. We do have something similar to your Starship Enterprise in our den... 3 pictures of the design workings of a sailing ship. So... sure, why not a Starship Enterprise pic? You home should reflect things that mean something to you. You may have just given me an idea for a blog... ; )
ReplyDeleteThanks Rian, and this was interesting ro read--I hope you do a future blog about the things on your walls. Well my apartment walls are mostly bare, but I'm working on it. :^)
DeleteI like it .. and hope it makes you happy every single time you look at it :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Shawn, it really does look a lot better in person. And I finally have one piece of artwork hanging in here. :^)
DeleteI absolutely love it as you probably knew I would. I wear my nerd credentials as a badge of honor! That woman does have a crappy financial advisor--geeze. My cash is making 4% in my account with my FA.
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret, I was curious what another Trekker would think of it--my camera isn't very good, it has a lot more detail than shown here. As for my neighbor with the crappy FA, so true! I just hope she takes my advice!
DeleteTotally cool DaVinci starship! You could still go get the bigger one for the living room. Not logical, eh? Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteHaha thank you Linda! Well, I debated the larger one for over a year before my "self compromise" and settling for this one. At least I got something!
DeleteClearly you ARE talking to the wrong woman and the first one really needs to look into decent financial advice. I love that art piece and don't think it's at all nerdy. There's nothing wrong with being nerdy anyway, I'd prefer nerdy over gun-toting crazy anyday.
ReplyDeleteHaha--River, thank you for the feedback and the morning chuckle. I'm glad someone out there appreciates us nerds! :^)
DeleteI feel sorry for your neighbour having spent 35 years in a relationship that fizzled. That seems like a bad investment. Anyway, your new artwork is very nice, Doug.
ReplyDeleteFlorence you're so right--the important thing is, she's really enjoying her single life. She has a sister who lives nearby and they do a lot of things together, I envy her. :^)
DeleteThat's quite strange, and obviously, she's a woman given to doing things her way. She's also quick to speak, and kind of rude. Hmmmmm. I do find myself wondering why her marriage failed.
ReplyDeleteDebby, I shouldn't have given the impression she's rude--she likes to tease me a lot, but she's a nice person. As for her marriage, I believe he drank a lot and was emotionally abusive but I just know her side of things.
DeleteI worried about that after the fact since I can be quick to speak, rude, and like to do things my own way. I probably sounded very judgemental. I shall go off and feel ashamed of myself now.
DeleteHaha--Debby, you're fine! I admire how upfront you can be about things. You stuck up for me awhile back on your own blog and it was most appreciated. :^)
DeleteGood for you. You did the financial equivalent of helping a little old lady cross the street. It'd be interesting to check up on her in a month or two to see if she followed your advice. As for the artwork . . . not my taste, but kinda cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Tom, I liked that analogy. Even if she is only 10 years older than me! Well I see her off and on throughout the week, so I will ask her eventually if she parked that nest egg someplace more productive... I hate seeing good money go to waste. 🙄
DeleteThe subject of the artwork wouldn't be my first choice, but like the style of it. The most important thing, is that you like and enjoy seeing it in your home.
ReplyDeleteAs for your financially illiterate neighbour, one wonders how she managed to have a house to selll - though I suppose that had something to do with her ex.
As a former accountant, I've met people like her before. They don't want to have their funds earning extra income because they would have to pay taxes on it. After a discussion, most would understand that the earnings would never be taxed at 100%, thus their gains would always exceed the taxes paid. (notwithstanding a jump in tax brackets). That's even before the discussion of CDIC (in Canada) and your FDIC. But there were always those very stubborn individuals who were certain they were right, and they weren't going to let their gov'mint take their money. That's probably the situtation her financial advisor has faced with her.
Thanks for the artwork feedback Maebeme, and (even though I feel guilty discussing her finances) I enjoyed your take on her situation as well. You could be very right... if someone told ME my money could be earning 5-600.00 a month with no added risk, I'd be jumping on it. I think these old fashioned banks like PNC with their old fashioned accounts count on people like her to be stubborn to change.
DeleteYour art isn’t nerdy, and you should have something you enjoy to look at. I wish I could get my bed made as sharp as yours! Your whole room looks great. Joyce
ReplyDeleteThanks Joyce! Your comment made my day. 🙂
DeleteI do like technical pen and ink drawings. Your star ship is pretty cool. My nerd art is a pen and ink drawing of the clipper ship "Flying Cloud." Your neighbor needs a new FA. Don't you wonder how much she is paying for advise from this FA?
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan, I like those drawings too--I just googled the clipper ship Flying Cloud, I bet that looks awesome! And a very big YES to how much she pays her FA. I seriously can't believe an FA would be so short sighted about a clients savings.
DeleteWell, I am leery of online banks, too, but I like the art you bought. It's good to show art that reflects your interests.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi, I wondered what you would think of it (there's a lot more detail in person, my camera isn't great). As for online banking, really? Very interesting...
DeleteHi Doug, I do like your new piece of artwork! Like Joyce the first thing I noticed was how tidy your bed is. While Chuck was in training for the military they had to make their beds like that every morning. Mine doesn’t look as sharp as that! Goodness, your neighbour is silly to not have her money in something with higher interest rate. She could have made a good chunk of money over ten years.
ReplyDeleteHave a good week Doug.❤️❤️
Thanks Robin! This is funny as I was going to email you a photo of that artwork as I know you & Chuck are Trek-fans. I'm glad you like it! And thanks for the nice words about my bedmaking, I just like thin blankets and tucking things in, I'm sure the military would fault me for crooked sheets :^) As for my neighbor, I feel wrong sharing that (why I didn't include her name) but I DO agree it's a shame she isn't putting that money to work for her. Thanks again R, hope you have a good week too. :^)
DeleteLive long and prosper, Doug. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you David. 🙂✌️
DeleteSounds like her advisor is living in the 1980's. Our local credit union has raised interest on Money Markets and CDS and I have been shifting money here and there. And I did it with the help of a live person in a brick building.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Miss Merry, yes I think credit unions are the way to go. I truly hope she does something, advisor or no advisor.
DeleteMy two sons (both around 50) love your new art. I showed it to them. They are big fans. I like it too. I have a poster of Neil Gaiman's Sandman on my wall, that perplexes a few but I love it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Celia, much appreciated--and wow, Neil Gaiman's Sandman? That is very cool!
DeleteI always thought I was a bit of a nerd, being a fan of maths and physics (especially cosmology and particle physics), but I don’t have pictures of the Enterprise on my wall (or anywhere else).
ReplyDeleteMy apartment is quite large, so it has a lot of walls. What’s on them is a bunch of Australian artists’ paintings, lithographs, and a couple of wonderful, if odd batiks; some American paintings, lithographs and some signed posters. My pièce de résistance is an original Marc Chagall (colored) pencil sketch.
Also, as Doug will testify, I’m the Music ManTM, but in spite of what regular readers of that defunct column might think, I listen mainly to classical music.
I suppose that means I’m more an arty-farty than a nerd. Oh well.
In spite of my maths background, I find financial stuff incomprehensible. Too many fudge factors for a pure mathematician.
Thank you Peter, you always have something interesting to contribute. And I bet you have a very interesting place! 🙂
DeleteYou know I am a Trekkie, and I LOVE that art. You are definitely not nerdy for liking it. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you DJan! I really wanted just one thing in here Trek related, but wanted to keep it modest. I thought this art piece was a good compromise. 🙂✌️
DeleteGosh! You should meet up with Margaret. She's loving the Star Trek series right now. I think that's a cool picture you have. I'm not especially liking that neighbor of yours. Hmmm... I agree she should have her money in some kind of CD or money market or financial service. My daughter works for a small financial firm and she says her boss takes care of a lot of older clients. Well... he manages, the office takes care of helping them with their online or whatever help they need. Tif keeps advising us to do this or that.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kay! I'm actually pretty good friends with Margaret, I've been after her for a while now to check out the Picard series on Paramount Plus. I'm very happy she did. 🙂👍
DeleteHi Doug, I just stopped by to see if you had a new post up, but I’ve already commented (and received your kind reply) to your Saturday, May 13, post, so I dropped down the page to this one, May 6th… You don’t have to be a nerd … Doug, first of all, I love that art … Starship Enterprise on canvas. Not only do I like the art, but it is so neat to have it printed on canvas. I would definitely put that on the wall anywhere in my home. Secondly, you were definitely talking to the wrong person before Sara got there. Sara sounds cool. I love the way you relate these incidents that take place in your building. Thank you for sharing! Have a happy week ahead. John
ReplyDeleteJohn, this made my morning thanks my friend! You always come up with the nicest words and it means more than you know. I sure hope you have a happy week ahead as well. :^)
