The Danish Experiment: well, when you’ve got everything handy…

Have you ever watched someone cooking or baking something on tv or Youtube, and it occurred to you that you had all those ingredients, so maybe you’d give it a go?

The other night I watched some woman making danish for her boys on Youtube, but they looked… un-danish.  She took a tube of dough, chopped it into 8 hunks with a cleaver, then pounded each chunk with her FIST into a hockey puck.  Wow.

I had a tube of crescent rolls from Easter, but didn’t want to make hockey pucks.  I watched a couple others make their own versions, then got busy.

Here, I’m laying out a couple rectangles of crescent roll dough.  See those perforations between each triangle?  Crimp the little holes together with your thumb & finger so each rectangle looks solid.

Hmm, these look about 4” wide per rectangle.  We’ll want one inch strips.

Get out your pizza cutter--well, they’re not perfect but they’ll do!

Okay let’s make the cream cheese filling.  We want 4 oz. softened cream cheese, 2 tablespoons GRANULATED sugar & 1 tablespoon lemon juice.  Beat it all into a frenzy, then set aside.
(Don’t use powdered sugar, or the filling will become frosting.)
Now we take each strip and twirl ‘em—then curl them into a circle on your baking sheet.
After I put each twirled & curled strip on my baking sheet, I used a tablespoon to fill the centers with a big glop of jam or cream cheese filling.

I’m going to bake these at 350F for 15 minutes.

Didn’t these turn out nicely?  But we’re not through yet—let them cool to room temperature….
Take 1/2 cup of POWDERED sugar & 1 tablespoon lemon juice.  Beat the two together using a spoon for 1-2 minutes, then drizzle over the tops of your danishes.

NOW they’re ready to enjoy  Nerd smile

    1. Hi Sue--good question! They're NOT as good as bakery danish, not as flaky or light--but they're still pretty yummy. If I did them over again, I'd use 1 1/2-2 strips per danish, not just one. And I'd only use the cream cheese filling & apricot preserves. :)

  4. Who are you having over to help eat those? If only I lived closer...I LOVE that you had your measuring tape out. :) I admit that I obsessively watch those high speed Tasty videos, especially if they involve desserts.

    1. Haha, thank you Margaret! After I began putting this blog together and saw my measuring tape in that one photo, I wondered if I should chop that out. I feel a lot better now! :)

    1. Thanks Tom you're very kind--but this took NO skills, I assure you! But if you make 'em... yep I'll take the blame :^)

  6. I'm very impressed. They are quite pretty. I doubt I would enjoy them in that I am not a big jam or danish fan. But they are a clever idea and I could see how grandkids would love to make them and eat them of course. Kids love to eat.

    1. Thank you Ann--well, I guess I made 'em because I keep too much jam in my fridge, I'm a big fan of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. But you're right, this would be a good idea for kids to make. :^)

  7. Those look great, Dug. Crescent rolls have wonderful diversity. I make sandwiches of ham, turkey, and cheese with the large ones. The boys really like these as something different for a change. And we're big lovers of peanut butter here too, but I only keep strawberry preserves in my frig for those sandwiches.

    1. I forgot to add that we also add bacon to those crescent ham/turkey and cheese sandwiches. (But we add bacon to a lot of things... adding bacon and cheese just ups the goodness for us).

    2. My gosh Rian, I had no idea they were so diverse---I only bought 'em around the holidays for rolls only. Thanks very much for your comment and for the new ideas! :)

  8. What a perfect Sunday morning post! I read this earlier and afterwards I *had* to bake that roll of cinnamon rolls I had in the fridge. Not as good as what you made though. I am impressed by your cooking skills. Have a good day Doug! (I have to go cut the grass - be glad you are in an apartment!)

  11. Oh goodness! Look good, but so many for just one person. Wonder if could bake the dough just before adding filling, cool some and freeze, then remove from freezer as wanted — thaw first or maybe not — then add whatever filling desired, pop in microwave. Have to limit sweets.

    1. Florence you're very kind because I know you eat a lot healthier (and more natural) then these gobs of sugar! This is not going to be a regular thing (but I do wish I could give you a couple) :)

  13. My wife creates things from cooking channels all the time. I on the other hand prefer recipe cards or finding one online I can print out.

I was pretty leery seeing your ingredients but the final result definitely looked delicious.

  14. These do look delicious! If I were close enough to snag one off your cookie sheet, I would love ONE. I can't afford to make too many when there are only two seniors here who are watching their weight and A1C closely. :-)
