My niece Sophia, 2022 Junior Prom Edition

Since my sister Shawn doesn’t belong to any social media, and I’ve posted enough blogs about Sophia here to give my niece her own blog category, I thought I’d share this recent one of her Junior Prom.

The kid is no longer a kid, she’s 17 1/2 years old!  So I made sure to get her permission first before sharing these.  (I didn’t even give my sister a say in the matter.)  Here’s Sophia with her handsome escort Nathan and don’t the two make a nice looking couple?

I know, Sophia—you’re just friends.  Nerd smile

Anyway, their prom was held last Friday (April 30) at Julian’s, a grand banquet hall in Washington, Pa.  “And a historical landmark” says my sister.  They feasted on chicken, pasta & cupcakes and the tickets were $45.00 a person—NOT COUPLE—PER PERSON.

(For the record, my own junior prom in 1978 was $10.00 a couple.  Not person—couple.  And we had the option of chicken –or- roast beef!)

Anyway, not much else to share except this lovely photo of Sophia from the back, showing her beautiful hair & figure.  It’s a little too femme fatale for me, but what do I know?   I’m behind the times and always will be!  Love you, Sophia!

  1. What a beautiful dress! I also enjoyed your posts, both the first and the mea culpa one, but it is your blog, and you get to write whatever comes into your head. We bloggers, though, need to be ready for whatever comes from them, however. You are a really good blogger, Doug, and I enjoy whatever you write!

    1. DJan, very kind of you to say (regarding this post and the earlier ones), thank you!

  2. It is a beautiful dress... and she does look wonderful, Dug. But I agree that I'm also behind the times as these girls seem too young to be wearing dresses like that. But what do I know? Times have changed and we have to adapt, right?

  3. She looks sweet in those photos. I remember all my proms, but not the price, as my date paid for the tickets. LOL.

    1. Thank you Gigi--well I remember the prices because I still have the tickets! Anyway, my sister gave me an itemized list of what it cost to send Sophia to the prom. And it was a lot more than those tickets, the guy gets off easy!

  4. Love the dress and the color--Sophia definitely has the figure for it. Beautiful hair as well! Proms are extremely expensive these days mostly because venues are. I served punch and cookies at mine with a group of friends who didn't have dates either.

    1. Thank you Margaret, you're very kind--and she sure does have the figure (which makes me nervous). But you are right on about how costly these are... and I can't believe a lovely person like yourself didn't have a date?

  5. Such a great looking couple and my what a terrific dress that she carried off perfectly.
Like gigi, don't know what my date paid but know they can now be productions. It is something that will always be remembered.

    1. "They can now be productions." Patti--you are spot-on here, I can't believe the money that was put into this affair. But thank you very much for your kind words. My niece looks like she was poured into that dress!

  6. Hi Doug, wow, Sophia looks incredible! That dress is lovely, the colour is fantastic!
I’ve never been to a prom. Didn’t want to go through all the searching for a dress. My guy at the time wanted to go. If I remember correctly we went out for supper and dancing with a group of friends and had a great time.
    Have a good weekend Doug.

  8. My prom was absolutely free though you had to be a junior or senior or the date of one to get in.

  10. Back in my day (“Yes, grand-dad”), the school social (as it’s called here) was free. There was no food (or very little, only nibblies), just dancing (and a bit of snogging in a dark corner if you got lucky).
You didn’t take a partner, but it was not uncommon to walk someone home afterwards (cue Willy DeVille “Just to Walk that Little Girl Home” and The Drifters “Save the Last Dance for Me”). You’d “surreptitiously” (but they knew what you were doing – girls are smarter than boys) check if her parents were picking her up after the social.

You can tell that I really like parentheses. I also would like to add a footnote. Oh wait, I have.

    1. Haha--well Peter, schools still have dances I know Sophie's does. This is just the big formal wing-ding of the year. But it does seem like there isn't much snogging going on these days! 😄

  11. Oh Uncle Duggie, your niece is gorgeous! I hope your sister has her ready for all of life's next adventures. (You might have to retell that adventure of your's with the girl during college days, especially if your sister didn't know what was going on then.)
Even in 2006, my son and his buddies didn't want to spend so much for prom. His Scoutmaster's wife was a professional cook, so an elaborate dinner for 4 couples was prepared at their home, and they reimbursed the cook for the food. It was the only time his Scoutmaster waited on the Scouts like a professional matre

For me, prom was going to be fun, but I was dating a guy a year younger. So, I had to pick him up and drive us. I ran a stop sign truly hidden behind a tree branch and I spent the evening worrying about what my Dad would do. Turns out Dad pays for any tickets in his car.....Linda in Kansas

    1. Thank you Linda, I'll pass your compliment along! Also, I think your son and his buddies were pretty smart, and you gave me a good laugh here about your own prom!

  12. I'm confused. Are hand-held bouquets in vogue these days for prom? It used to be little corsages on their dress shoulder or strapped onto their wrist. Are you sure they didn't get married! Linda in Kansas

    1. I know, I did think that too. I bought corsages for my dates when I went to these dances! 🙂
