Tales from the bedroom: ApacheDug in “Good Morning, Terror!”

Once upon a time lived a quiet man named Doug, who also lived alone.  He didn’t have a lot of excitement in his life, and that suited him just fine.  He was nearing 61 years old and wasn’t exactly an old man yet, but was no spring chicken either.

Every night, Doug liked to watch the 11:00 news.  He’d then go to the kitchen, rinse his tea mug and take his nightly dose of Amlodipine.  He’d check his front door was locked, shut off the tv & lights, go to the bathroom & brush his teeth, and go to bed.

He didn’t go to sleep right away though.  Doug enjoyed 1/2 hour of e-book reading or watching Youtube videos on his tablet before shutting it off around midnight.  And then one night, last night in fact, Doug was in bed reading when he noticed a couple teeny-tiny flutterings on his tablet’s screen.  “Clothing moths!”  Doug whispered, and swatted them away.

Where did they come from?  He hasn’t seen any moths in over a year.  He went back to his ebook, and again they hopped on his device.  They were barely the size of an eyelash, but still a nuisance.  And that’s when Doug remembered the moth traps in his bedroom closet.

He bought them the previous spring on Amazon, but it turned out he hadn’t needed them—until now. He opened one of the six foil packets, removed the trap, folded it into a triangle and peeled off the wax-paper liner exposing a very sticky interior and moth pheromones.

He hung it on the metal bed-pole above his pillow, turned off his tablet, and went to sleep.

The next morning, Doug awoke and yawned, stretching his arms.  He reached up behind his head to see if the moth trap was still hanging there.  It most certainly was.  Climbing out of bed, Doug held the trap over his bedroom’s lampshade to get a better look inside.

Doug decided he’d try sleeping while wearing his covid mask for awhile.

The End

  1. Hi Doug, yikes, that is a large spider! I too would be sleeping with a mask and possibly a hoodie. 😳😆
I see you are a night owl. Have you always been or has that just since you retired?
I can barely make it to 9:00 but we are up at 5:00.
    Enjoy the weekend Doug!❤️

    2. Thanks Robin, but me? A night owl? I'm up at 6:10 every morning (but take a 1 hour nap in the early afternoon). Anyway, that was a frightening spider! I just wonder where it would've wound up if that trap wasn't hanging there! Hope you have a good weekend too my friend. 🙂♥️

    1. DJan don't be embarrassed, it's probably very good for you! Well between you & Robin, I'm feeling like I should go out clubbing or something. And yes this IS a huge spider, thank you--I needed to hear someone else say it :^)

  3. Holy moly, that is one scary spider. Too bad you live with others in the apt. building or I'd be tempted to burn the building down:) Only half ways kidding. I'd be less afraid of snacking on one while snoring than being the snack of one. Think I need some moth traps.

    1. Patti, you just made me guffaw and I don't guffaw easily! :-) Well spiders aside, those moth traps work. Too bad I have to throw this spidery one out, they're also not cheap!

  4. Oh my! Ewww!!! I expected to see a dozen moths, not THIS! Bring out the Raid. Nah, it might kill you, too. I hope you flushed that bug down the toilet. Gigi Hawaii

    1. Haha, thanks Gigi! Well, I can't flush it as it's stuck in that trap--all I can do is give the whole trap a proper burial at the bottom of my kitchen waste can 😄

    2. We have Raid here in Australia, they bought out our Baygon which I loved because it worked so well. The Raid does nothing. We must have tougher bugs.

  5. I was almost lulled to sleep while listening to Third Party Doug going through his nightly routine. Than WHAM!!! A big scary spider at eye level!!! What a dramatic ending. I've always been arachnophobic but thankfully a bit less so in my senior years. My old farmhouse has a basement that must be Club Med for them.

    1. Haha! Thank you Florence, getting this fun comment about Club Med almost made this spider worthwhile; ALMOST. 😄

  6. GOOD GOSH! Whaaaat? I am also arachnophobic. Just looking at that picture sent chills up my spine. Is that a tarantula? I just changed my mind about going to Pittsburg. Accck! I thought our cane spiders were horrible but that one looks even bigger. At first, I thought it was a fake spider to scare away the moths. I’d take the moths any day. And I’d notify your building manager.

  8. Dug, I've never heard of moth traps, can you believe? I do know my mom used moth balls when we were growing up (smell awful)... but never moth traps. Apparently they are good traps for spiders... or possibly any bug. I'll have to check that out... (as I don't want to worry about bugs while I sleep).

And I go to bed around 9 PM and get up around 7:30 (with a few trips to the facilities during the night). However, I do read for an hour or two before falling asleep (and sometimes my book, my glasses, and my iPhone are somewhere lost in the covers in the morning.)

Wishing you a bugless rest of the week!

    1. Rian thanks for your comment, I'm glad there's someone out there that stays up a little later than the others. And yes those moth traps are very very effective. Even if you think you don't have them, hang a couple of those in your closet like I do and 3 months later you'll be shocked. I just wasn't expecting that spider this morning! 😮😮. PS. I get the same things lost in my covers too 😄

  9. I've never heard of those moths and hope never to do so. I'm having some issues with those tiny ants again so the exterminators (I pay for them monthly) came to do their service today. Hope that eradicates the little buggers. They're fine outside but NOT in my kitchen. That spider, YIKES! I have a similar bedtime routine to you. I read for an hour or two and go to sleep between 11-12 unless the book is particularly good and then it's sometimes 1 am.

    1. Margaret you pay for an exterminator monthly? I'm so sorry. I'm surprised you never heard of clothing moths though, you know what mothballs are don't you? Anyway, it's good to know a kindred spirit in the late night routine! 🙂👍

    2. my thirteen year old self just said moth balls are usually found on really large moths. Hah!

  10. Yikes. I really didn’t want to see that first thing this morning, and it was only on my screen.
I won’t tell you my spider/bed story – it would freak you out.

    2. Okay, you asked for it.
This was a few years ago, in the middle of summer, and we were going through a very, very hot spell. Even the nights were hot – it didn’t drop below about 32, 33 degrees (that’s 92, 94 in American degrees).
So, I only had the bottom sheet on the bed, and nothing on me. When I woke I noticed a spider on the light fitting on the ceiling above my bed. It was a Huntsman, about the size of the palm of my hand. It was situated such that had it dropped down or fallen, it would have landed on my “John Thomas”.
I got out of bed (or off the bed, more accurately) faster than I ever have before (or since).

  13. That's horrid. Keep those traps everywhere! That spider has parents and kids. That was too close to your head! And where's the video of him crawling from wall to bed post to get IN to the trap? Aaaccckk! Set some on the floor, or tape on the wall.
I heard about moths damaging clothes during the 1920s to 1950s. That was when hope chests were made with cedar linings: to keep moths from eating clothes and sweaters.
I have some square open-ended boxes on the floor with sticky innards: to catch anything, mostly crickets. They catch other thingies, but not that big! Ewww.

    1. Thanks Linda! Yes, that spider was inches from my head! As for that video you described, I would not want to see that. 😄😄. And yes I now keep a couple of those moth traps under my bed and behind my dresser. And I do keep cedar chips in a couple of my drawers!

    2. Try official "Roach Motels", the little brown open-ended boxes I described, especially for any creepy crawlies that start on the floor. WalMart doesn't have them but my local Ace Hardware does. Other brands make you build the sticky box, or just have a sticky sheet out flat. I'd rather they be stuck inside a box where I don't have to see them until I peek inside one end. Linda in Kansas

  14. Ack! A spider! Glad you caught him! Is it possible the moths are pantry moths and came in via something like flour? Put some of the traps in your kitchen as well, just in case, they do tend to get everywhere in their search for a place to lay eggs.
Your bedroom is so neat, so tidy. Mine has too much furniture and piles of books waiting to be read. And stuffed toys.

    1. River there's 2 types of moths, pantry and clothing. On the Moth Trap kit, it explains the two and why one trap won't catch the other. No problems in my kitchen fortunately. And thank you for noticing my tidy bedroom I try! 🙂👍

  17. Peter won't tell you his spider story, but I'll tell you mine. One night, my husband woke me up hollering something was crawling in his ear. I jumped out of bed and grabbed the flashlight and shined it in his ear just in time to see a spider dangling from hubby's ear. I quickly smashed it into the bed! We couldn't believe it. The spider was small, but still creepy! I would never have believed that could happen had I not witnessed it first hand. Guess they just look for small spaces to crawl into. Hubby washed out his ear and we went back to sleep. Glad you trapped yours!

  18. I've not heard of those moths, but spiders are my absolute worst fear. The thought of one crawling on one while sleeping is beyond creepy. Ewwww, just ewww!
As others have mentioned your bedroom is so tidy. Especially your bed making skills...mine often stays unmade because a certain cat likes to nap in the spot I woke up in. :)

    1. Maebeme, another one unfamiliar with clothing moths? They get into your closet & dresser, and munch tiny holes in your t-shirts. Which I used to hate until now, as their trap saved me from that spider! Thank you for the tidy comment, but honest-to-God the 2 times I didn't make my bed in the last 4-5 years I got surprise company. To avoid that, I make the bed every day. :^)

  21. Wow! That's no small spider! I wrote a piece a few years ago about our family's spider experience here in Calif., then your piece also reminded me of the black widow spiders we had in abundance when we lived in Arizona. As for moths, some years ago they started appearing in my kitchen. My husband thought maybe I was negligent somehow in cleaning, but I learned later they're very common and are brought into the house generally from grocery stores. Needless to say, I've had a supply of traps out for years as has taken forever to be rid of them it seems like. I didn't know there were two types as have never had the clothing moths you describe.

    1. Thanks for sharing Joared, but I hardly think my scary little spider compares to your black widows! I believe I would've rolled over and dropped dead of a heart attack if I ever saw one of those up close! This is also interesting, another person who knows about pantry moths but not clothing moths. Whenever I buy those moth kits on Amazon, it will ask if this is for pantry or clothes. I haven't dealt with any in the kitchen - - yet. 🙂
