Back home in the city and where do I go from here

Well, after a week or so at my sister Shawn’s house, I am back in my apartment in the city.  I enjoyed my stay with Shawn, her husband Jim & my niece Sophia (and my time alone with their cat Flynn while they spent their days working or at school).

I certainly did a lot of eating, from the ham & cheesy potatoes Shawn made my first night there, to dinner with Michael & Jessica (Jim’s son from his first marriage), Cracker Barrel in Morgantown WV (where my niece works), Scotty’s Pizza and finally our second cousin’s restaurant Bob’s Burgers & More.

(Bob has a cattle farm and raises his own beef, that’s pretty impressive!)

Frankly I’m ready to go back and do it again.  From shopping for home goods with Shawn at Big Lots & Walmart to soaking with Jim in their hot tub (set up in the old schoolhouse behind their house) I was reminded of what normal life can be like.  Even an old hermit like myself could get used to this sort of thing.

Strangely, my last real visit there was all the way back in August 2018 (as shown here).  It was right after that last visit I began developing some real health problems with my pancreas, followed by an enflamed liver, two kidney operations and ultimately my TMJ disorder.  I wouldn’t feel better again for a couple years, but that doesn’t explain a 4 1/2 year gap between visits.

While I was there this time (without my laptop) I had plenty of time to think, and ponder about things, and what I want to do with my life.  My niece thinks I should try dating, but I’d honestly settle for a friend or two to hang out with regularly.  But honestly, this long visit felt like a real wake-up call.

My sister rode me back to Pittsburgh on the 30th, and when we entered my apartment the oily smell (which prompted my leaving) was mostly gone—and replaced with a less unpleasant “ozoney” smell like that processed air you smell when you first enter a hotel room, only quadrupled.  A fine white haze was in the air, on my furniture—everywhere.

In my absence maintenance had placed some type of ozone contraption in my apartment which sucked out all the oxygen and negated the bad particles.  They said they also wiped my air ducts out, I didn’t believe it.  But they were still proactive in finding a solution, so I’m grateful.

In fact, after my sister left and I turned on the heat—the new blower motor they’d installed in my bathroom ceiling began making a L-O-U-D flapping noise.  The next morning I asked a maintenance man if he’d mind listening to it and telling me if I was overreacting.  He said sure, I turned it on and he said “Turn it off!  Your motor’s casing is cracked!”

(They promptly returned and installed a SECOND new blower motor for my heat & ac on Friday, it sounds great now.)

So, about my blogging… I’m not sure I’m ready to return to it like before.  To be honest, I worry a little it takes up too much of my time.  I told my friend Danielle Saturday night that I spend one day a week writing a blog, and 6 days a week catching up with everyone else in the blog-verse.  Several bloggers I know like to post 3 or more times a week, which makes for a lot of reading.  I think I need to take a step back there, even if it costs me comments on my own posts.

Anyway, that’s all I have for now—Shawn, if you’re reading this—thank you again for letting me stay with you guys for a week, it was wonderful seeing all of you and I look forward to visiting again soon.

And to the people who made it this far in my post, thanks as always for being here.  Nerd smile

  3. A lot of us, me included, go through a midlife/later life “ crisis” where we wonder where our life has gone and what do we want now. Getting out more sounds good, whether it be with friends or family. I’ve been going to activities at our library, one of which is a Tai Chi class that is out of my comfort zone, but I want the social interaction. I hope you figure your things out. I love your blog because it is so different, but know you have been at it for a long time. Best wishes, Joyce

  5. Hi Doug! Glad that you were able to enjoy some family time. And hopefully your apartment is now back to baseline, with no strange odors.

As far as blogging goes, please listen to your heart on this. If your sense is that it is taking up too much of your time, then it sounds like it is time to cut back. Your readers will still be here! We enjoy your posts; but the most important thing is that you not get burned out trying to keep up a hectic schedule. We'll be here when you do post, always grateful to hear from you.

  6. Welcome back, Dug. I have to admit that I've missed your comments... to my mundane silly posts. But so glad you enjoyed your 'family' time. That is important. And to be honest, blogging is just a past-time... do it if and when you feel like sharing something. Otherwise, enjoy what makes you happy.

  7. Haha. Yes, I am a blogger, who posts 3x a week. Sorry. But, I like to write, and I do enjoy reading comments. It brings some joy to my otherwise boring life. Glad you had a good time with your family. Maybe, you should move to their area so you can enjoy their company more often.

    1. Gigi thank you, and honestly I admire your dedication to your blog. You always manage to post something that captures my interest, like today's piece on Audrey Hepburn. As for moving to my sister's area, I actually did try that a year after I retired. But that's my hometown and I left there in the mid 80s and I love visiting but Pittsburgh is definitely my home. 🙂

  8. Dear Dug, I always enjoy reading your honest, conversational style blog. You're a very good (and descriptive!) writer. Thank you for your posts. When it seems like too much to keep up with yours and others' blogs, it's good to evaluate and follow your heart. So glad you had a good week away. Change of scenery and some thinking time can lead to a revised direction. Many libraries do offer different activities now - movie showings, book groups, Friends of the Library book sales (a group that often needs volunteers), etc. You'll figure it out; I have no doubt - you're both full of thought and a person of action. And you can always change your mind! One of your many fans, Kim in PA

    1. Kim this was so nice of you, my gosh--thank you. And I really do like the library suggestion, that's a great idea. I know there's a nice library nearby, in fact I haven't been to in a couple years (but I recall them having an Events calendar). Thank you again for what you said here. :^)

  9. Although I'm not a regular reader of yours, I occasionally see an update listing for your blog on Kay's blogroll that shows you have a new post that sounds interesting, like today's. I'm very sorry you were forced to leave your apartment, but it sounds like it was the perfect answer for many reasons. Seeing new places, putting yourself in new situations, thinking about your life with new perspective--all good stuff. Sure hope you get to do more of that, but without that stinky smell being the cause.

  10. Doug, it sounds like you're wanting to get out more, socialize, find some groups of like-minded people to hang out with and not spend as much in the apartment or on the computer. There are many exciting options to explore, especially living in a big city like you do. I love reading your blog and your wonderful comments on mine, but I support you 100% in whatever you decide suits you best! xoxo

Really enjoyed reading your posts so far and if you take more breaks from writing, well, you've certainly earned them. Glad you've decided to spread your wings a bit. A change is as good as a rest (so they say). All my best!

  12. Welcome back Doug, it sounds like a wonderful time was had with your family.
Please don't put pressure on yourself to blog. Whether it is once a week, once a month, or even less, I'm certain your readers will be there when you update.
As for reading blogs, I used to follow a lot more than I do now, but like you I found it was too much. I follow fewer blogs now, and I don't always leave comments. I know that I have readers who visit, usually 80-100 views, but only 5-10 regularly leave comments. It doesn't matter to me, I know they are there and obviously find something of interest in my blog.
In any event, take care of yourself and do what is best for you.

  13. I am a firm believer in doing what makes you happy and fulfilled. I am sorry you had to move out of your home but am happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with Shawn. It sounded like a true mini vacation. Sometimes, one change leads to other changes. I'm sure there are more good things to come your way.

    1. Thanks very much Susan, you summed things up pretty well. I'm just having a little trouble adjusting to life the way it was before this all happened. But it was a very nice mini vacation like you said. It did give me a lot to think about. 🙂

  14. Your holiday sounded perfect. You had a good time and they fixed your apartment problem. It is a challenge with how to live your life at times. I am retired and have had some forced changes the past three months. All I know is the door will open with what you need to do.

I have been blogging much like you for awhile. It is important to focus on enjoying the process. I like to read blogs. I get to a few. I have stayed so busy taking care of family members; I have not created many blog posts. But I still enjoy the blogosphere. I've made some friends through blogs and it has been a great outlet. So I would encourage you to continue but at a pace that allows you to live the best life possible.

  15. It is about balance, really. If the blog is taking up too much of your time, cut back on it. If you need time to get out there and try new things, get out there. Time's a-wasting! In the end, you may find a way to bring blogging back in a more balanced way. I hope so, but the most important thing is to live a life that you love.

    1. Thanks for your input Debby. I think my important thing is, somehow incorporating more people in my life. So many nice people in the blog verse, but I spend too much time alone. I just need someone in my real life too. 🙂

  16. Welcome back (if that’s appropriate when I’m 12,000 miles away?)
A holiday is always a good thing – the A.M. and I have just returned from a week away in western Victoria (Halls Gap, for those Aussies who may be vaguely interested).

I hope you’re refreshed, and don’t beat yourself up about not blogging as often as you used to. We’ll all still check in now and then to see what’s happening.

But it certainly looked beautiful there. 🙂. Thanks for continuing to check in, I'll be here!

  17. Welcome home Doug! I'm happy you had a great week with family. We all need that sometimes. Good to know the situation is better at home now and I hope that continues. I miss your posts when you are not around but I sure do understand the time blogging takes up. I love it but I have trouble keeping up. I took a long blog break and was so happy to return, but I have just not been keeping up well at all. I'm still dealing with so much around here, especially with Tom's health and I find I just don't have the time these days. I have even wondered about blogging once a month but I'm not sure others would like that. I'll look for you when you are here Doug! Take care! 💗 😉

I actually thought of you when I wrote this post, I'm not dealing with different crises like you've been, but I do know I need to get out more and see more real people. I sure am sorry about Tom's health, please keep us posted if you can. And I think all your readers think the world of you and would very much appreciate if you could blog once a month even! 🙂👍

  18. Glad you had a good time with your sister! Nice that you could come home to clean ducts (maybe) and I hope that's not toxic white powder they left behind. Sounds like a screw was running loose in the fan housing. Nice that they'd change it out so quickly. Go forth into the world and do as you like. Life is short. That being said, I follow people who blog daily, weekly and monthly or even less, so whenever you choose to blog, I'll swing by and read. I'm happy to hear you had a good getaway, maybe now's the time to plan that Amtrak trip you talked about awhile back. Whatever you do, enjoy!

  20. Hi Doug, Good golly, I am sorry to hear about all the difficulties but happy to hear about your great visit with sister. As I was reading along in your post, it was like hitting bingo … you said, “I worry a little it takes up too much of my time. I told my friend Danielle Saturday night that I spend one day a week writing a blog, and 6 days a week catching up with everyone else in the blog-verse. Several bloggers I know like to post 3 or more times a week, which makes for a lot of reading. I think I need to take a step back there, even if it costs me comments on my own posts.” OMG, Doug, I could have written those same words, but you said it better than I could. When I tell my “non-virtual” friends about this, they say, just don’t worry about the comments. Well, that sounds good, but it isn’t so easy because when I get kind, thoughtful comments, well, they just can’t be ignored. Basically, this is why I’ve dropped down to posting about once every 3 weeks. I’m going to put up a new post tonight and I’m spending this afternoon looking at my favorite bloggers to see if I need to leave a comment for them. Maybe that explains why I didn’t comment on your earlier post … I certainly would have … but it was in that time period when I just wasn’t paying attention. Now that I am paying attention 😊 I just want you to know your niece has a good idea. Have you considered some of those “get to know you” websites? There are, no doubt, plenty of folks who would enjoy getting to know you. Lastly, happy to hear (no pun intended) the fan has been replaced. 😊 Have a great weekend ahead and Happy Easter to you. John

    1. John, if you see this thanks so much. We haven't known each other a long time, but I always look forward to your comments and in fact I usually read them twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. This was very thoughtful of you, and I'm glad you got (and could relate to) what I was saying. As for my desire to meet more people in the physical world, you're right I need to take a closer look at those friend websites (particularly the ones for older folk). I'm also going to try to join a book or movie club nearby, I'll be writing about that soon. In the meantime, thanks again and I look forward to your own next post. :^)
