There must be a cursed tiki idol somewhere in my house—I mean, what else could it be

This past week I was supposed to go to Red Lobster with Evvie, Deb & around 20 others from the Lutheran Center.  I’d known about it for weeks, looked at the online menu a couple nights before, was all set for some fun times with friends and linquini with lobster sauce.

The day before our outing, I wrenched my back and couldn’t go.  It’s gotten a little better, but my lower back still hurts.  It’s not like I slipped & fell, or picked up anything heavy… so what happened?

I admit I’m not in the best of shape at the moment.  I spent the last 15 months with long covid, and have yet to resume any daily exercise.  I’m still dealing with relapses too, but they’re becoming fewer and only lasting a couple days.

But back in mid-March, I got the flu and was laid up for a good 8-9 days.  Made a shaky recovery, went to the Pittsburgh Aviary not fully well but was anxious to get back out there.  And exactly one week after that, got one of the worst colds in my life.  Coughed nonstop for 14 days & nights straight.

And now I’m dealing with this back pain AND a swollen abdomen which isn’t too painful, but it is uncomfortable.  I’m pretty sure it’s related to my non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (which hasn’t bothered me much since I was diagnosed with it in 2018).  Ugh!

Remember when the Bradys were cursed?  Greg wore the tiki and had a wipeout while surfing; Peter told the gods to come & get him, and got a big hairy spider on his chest; Alice wore the idol and threw her back out during a hula dancing lesson

Here’s how I can tell the difference between belly fat and fluid rentention.  When I’m feeling chubbier than usual, I can do a good job of sucking it in when I’m out and about.  When it’s abdominal fluid, you cannot suck it in.  Why am I sharing all of this?  I’m sorry, I just had to get it out of my system—and if I can’t do it physically, I’ll do it with words.

This is a good reminder to cut back on the sugar (which may be giving my liver some problems).  At Christmas, Keurig sent me a gift-box of iced coffees, and I hated all of them EXCEPT the McCafe k-cups which I loved a little too much.  (Boy are they super sweet.)  I ordered a lot more of them, and got into the habit of having an iced coffee every night around 10:30 before bed.  Every night.

I know, I know… I used to have so much more discipline!

Well, I don’t know if I’ll be posting this.  If you’re reading it, you should probably act surprised.  I hope everyone has a nice Easter.  And I hope this time next year, I’ll be at my sister’s house, enjoying deviled eggs and spiral ham.

  1. Should you get medical care if you know it’s fluid? That sounds scary. Sorry you have been through so much. Sorry to tell you what to do, but stop the sugar now! We all struggle, but really just find something else to take its place if you must. I went to ortho on Wednesday and have bone on bone in both knees. Got injections, a brace for the worst one and am taking anti inflammatory med. my son who lives in London arrives here in early May for three weeks, then I am going back with him for two and know I will be doing a lot of walking. Hang in there! Joyce

    2. Yeah, I’m right there with you with all these health issues. I have a cold atm but didn’t want to add that, lol. Joyce

  2. Oh no, that linguini with lobster sauce sounded good.
    Steer clear of those tikis.

I have a belly like yours, but it’s not from eating sweet things. I always avoid the sweet course at restaurants and maybe have a single piece of chocolate with my coffee about once every two or three weeks. I eat properly – cook my meals from fresh ingredients.
So, I hear you ask, how about the belly?
That comes from the wine I drink with meals - every meal (except breakfast, of course). My liver could be in worse shape than yours.

    1. Thank you Peter, I may not partake in the same spirits you do but I still feel we are kindred ones. 🙂🙂

  3. I'm so sorry to hear this! You do have me convinced. There has to be a hidden tiki somewhere. If only you felt up to searching! And one teensy iced coffee in the evening wracking all this havoc, too. Is there no fairness in the world?
I hope you do feel better soon, that you can get over all these maladies once and for all, maybe start some mild exercise (I do no exercise so I have no advice on that) and that your silly liver behaves itself going forward.
And I have my fingers crossed you can go with the crowd for the next outing and that next Easter you will be enjoying the spiral sliced ham and deviled eggs.
Gosh, I feel so bad for you! Maybe you could sage your house? Something to change your luck.

    1. Thanks very much Miss Merry, I always enjoy your feedback. Don't feel bad, it's just a temporary setback I'm sure. Sure has been a lousy last year or so though! I hope your son-in-law is continuing his path to a full LC recovery.

  4. You have had a rough year. I hate being sick. I hate having bone pain (usually arthritis). I live in the country and I think that and the vaccines is why I have never gotten Covid. I taught school so at one time I did not get sick easily. I retired in 2007 so that immunity as been wearing off. I do hope you get a break and your back clears up. I had a huge knee injury or at least it felt huge. It took me about a month to get over it and I have no idea how I reinjured that knee.

    1. Thanks Ann, and I sure am sorry about that knee. I've had several friends injure theirs, a couple requiring surgery and I know it's a lot to go through. I'm sure I'll get through these recent things soon enough. Sure makes me miss being young though. Health really is everything.

  6. You have had a time of it! But the thing that stopped me dead in my tracks: "Every night I have an iced coffee before I go to bed".

Ye gods and little fishes!!!! You can sleep after a bedtime coffee? Color me dumbfounded.

    1. Thank you Debby and happy easter; sorry for my little pity party here. As for the iced coffee every night, before that I was drinking a pretty strong cup of coffee the hot stuff. So I guess I was used to the caffeine. I can't explain it, but can't seem to go to sleep without it!

  7. Goodness Doug, as the saying goes, "if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all". I hope your back is on the mend, and you can get the tummy issues handled. AND get rid of that Tiki!
I drink McCafe iced coffee too, but from the restaurant. In fact, I am enjoying one right now. :) It depends on who is making it, as to the level of sweetness. Today is perfect, not too sweet. I have had one or two when they didn't put any sugar in it too. But I couldn't drink one at 10:30 p.m. I'd never sleep a wink.
    Happy Easter!

    1. Thank you Maebeme, you're very kind. I'll get over this, don't know why I felt the need to share it here. I'm glad someone else enjoys those iced coffees! They're addictive! The funny thing is, can't imagine having one during the day. Hope you have a nice Easter. 🙂

  8. Caffeine works differently for different people. I don't know that I'm very sensitive to it but I wouldn't want to take the chance of an evening leaded (as my dad used to say) coffee. I go for either unleaded or half-caf. :) I'm so sorry about your fluid retention. I know that my liver doesn't like tylenol or ibuprofen so I stay away from both. Hope your back is better soon! I often don't know how I tweak mine sometimes--just by living?

    1. Thanks very much Margaret, I always get a lot from your comments. I was drinking decaf every other night or so, before the iced coffee. In fact, I plan to tonight. And interesting about your liver not liking those meds, I need to keep that in mind. I hope your Easter day is a special one. :^)

  9. Doug,
    Happy Easter!
Maybe you need a bag full of lucky rabbits feet, and a bowl full of four leaf clovers! I do feel your pain though; I have gotten busy with Spring projects and my back is seriously objecting. Hope you are recovering and feel better!

  10. I have fatty liver, too, as well as cysts in my liver. Hope I don't get liver cancer in the future. At any rate, I am so sorry you have these setbacks preventing you from having fun. But there are others (like David), who are worse off than you. Yeah, I know, so what? Oh well, cheer up.

  11. You certainly deserve a string of good luck, I hope you get it soon. I always sing the old Hee Haw (tv show) song when things go wrong and it usually makes me grin and feel a little better. If you don't know it, here's a sample from YouTube:
    https://youtu.be/-IIKE9p5SEw?si=J0RLM-5daFBbszEd
"Gloom, despair and Agony on Me,
    Deep dark depression, excessive Misery,
If it weren't for Bad Luck, I'd have No Luck At All!
Gloom, despair and Agony on Me!"
Here's hoping your luck changes soon.
Hope you had a good Easter. Instead of our usual quiet day, we were forced to spend the day cleaning our yard after a very bad Easter Eve thunderstorm. Fortunately our damage was limited to piles of debris and downed trees from our neighbor's trees, which he refuses to cut down or trim, but he **generously** came over and "helped" us after my husband insisted.

  12. Dug, I think it's easy to wrench a person's back when they get older. I once twisted to one side too hard to see if a car was coming from the left... and couldn't get out of the car when I got home (Didn't realize what had happened till later). I was in bed for 2 weeks until it healed. . Even had to use a walker for a while. So, who knows what you did.
And I thought tiki's meant a connection between man and nature and were good luck?? Maybe there are good and bad tikis...
Also... I tried a k-cup of Godiva's Caramel Macchiato at my son's. Never had one at Starbucks and I don't usually like flavored coffees, but I will look for this in the grocery as it was really good! (Probably even sweeter than your McCafe k-cups, but so--oo good.)

    1. Thanks for sharing Rian, your own back story made me wince but I am very glad you made a full recovery. My own back is doing better. Your Caramel Macchiato sounds delicious, I think I need to look for that one. :^)

  13. Thank you for explaining how to tell the difference between water retention and belly fat…I’ve been retaining fluid and it’s so completely annoying and uncomfortable I’ve been to 8 different doctors and no one wants to help.

The Brady bunch reference is funny!!
