This past Wednesday, a few of us from the Lutheran Senior Center took a road trip to McKees Rocks, home of Rockefeller’s Grille.
Here’s short chubby me and tall skinny Mary before our trip. Mary chose not to go, she just returned from a family vacation. I was a little bummed, but glad she’s back.
On my way to the center, I stopped at the barbershop to tell them the restaurant we were going to and got a resounding “boo” from my haircutter and the patrons there. No one was too impressed with the place.
It didn’t matter too much to me, I was just glad to get out of the house and be with friends.
It’s a good thing too, as this wasn’t one of our better outings. Our waitress was short-tempered, my own meal was drowning in tomato sauce, and we only had 20 minutes to eat before our Access ride showed up early.
Plus mine felt overpriced; my lunches never go over $20-22.00 and this one was over $30.00. But I will say it again, I’m just glad I was able to go.
Here’s a mish-mash of pics, you know how I roll!
This is Melvin, a regular at the Lutheran Center. In his nineties, very quiet, but has managed to make a lot of friends. You should see photos of him from the early 1950s, his “hot-rodding” days. Here’s the Rockefeller’s Menu, the back was as full as the front.
My gal Evvie listening to some wild stories. Boy, she has my dad’s eyes.
And here’s Evvie’s lunch, a club sandwich & fries; it looked & smelled so good.
Here’s my lunch, eggplant parmigiana and a side of linguini. Everything was drowning in tomato sauce, the eggplant & pasta were both mushy and tasteless. Had a nice salad before this came out, wound up bringing most of this home to “doctor up” for dinner.
I couldn’t resist sharing this. When we were heading into the restaurant, a 1957 DeSoto convertible was sitting in the parking lot, with black & white leather seats. What a sweet ride!
Finally, here’s that leftover eggplant I had for dinner—I spooned off half the sauce, added some olive oil, minced garlic & dried basil and put it under the broiler for 5-10 minutes. It looked & smelled a little better the second time around!
Between you & me, I haven’t been in the best of spirits lately—I keep having these post-covid relapses where the left side of my head & face will burn and ache for 1-2 hours a couple times a day. I’m trying to not let it stand in the way of getting out there, but sometimes it’s too much.
It happened on the way to the restaurant, I sat there in silence and thankfully it did lessen.
On the trip home I was pain-free, and my tipsy pal Dennis & I discussed signing up for Social Security, and should we make plans to visit Club 412 (a gentleman’s club aka strip joint we passed on the way home). I’m sure those women on our shuttle were getting a real earful—I hope they know we were kidding! That’s it, thanks for reading!
Nice to see the pictures of you and your friends, Doug. I think that dish was a little overpriced, but you got two good meals out of it.
ReplyDeleteThank you DJan, much appreciated my friend. 🙂
DeleteWhen I saw the name Rockefeller's I assumed you were going to a fine dining establishment so was very surprised when I saw the menu.
ReplyDeleteAs for grumpy waitress, it may have been that your group, like many I have seen, had far too many demands and asked too many questions. With a large group, I always try to make things very easy and never complain. Then, I make sure to see the waitstaff later and give them a good tip beyond what has been left by the individual diners.
These times are hard for restaurants. Increasing costs and procurement issues are creating problems. I don't know how waitstaff is paid in Pennsylvania, but in California the wage is $20/hour.
As for the food, yeah, it doesn't look all that great, certainly not what I would expect with a name like Rockefeller. Glad you were able to make the leftovers better.
Thanks dkzody, and you're certainly right we had a large group, there was 20 of us and they assigned 2 waitstaff to our 2 tables. (And some of these seniors can be over-fussy.) But I've been with the same group in other restaurants that were handled so much better... well, I don't know how much they're paid but we left some pretty generous tips :^)
DeleteI'd say Evie made the right choice. It's a shame that your dish was hardly presentable. Clearly you made the best of it at home.
ReplyDeleteNow that DeSoto was a real treat! What a well cared for vehicle.
Thank you Maebeme! Yes, if we go there again I know what NOT to order (Evvie loved hers); and you're right, that car--it was a beauty!
DeleteI would love Evvie's club and fries meal. Funny thing, I have not been to a restaurant in over a year. But LAST NIGHT I had a bad dream about going to one with my family. My meal was uneatable little balls of stuff and my portion of the bill came to $284.70. I was trying to write a check for it but the check had things like date and payee in the wrong place. Then I got separated and lost from the rest of the family. Ugh!!! Anyway, sorry about your ongoing post COVID ordeal. ❤️🦉
ReplyDeleteFlorence, thank you my friend and that was a weird dream alright! Well believe it or not I prefer my OWN cooking to eating at a restaurant, for me these trips are all about being with friends--but I suppose some good food doesn't hurt :^) And thank you for the post covid words, I'm going to beat it for sure.
DeleteI agree that getting out is important, no matter the location! Being around people is also critical to our state of mind. (in a positive and sometimes negative way!) That IS a lot of tomato sauce--glad you could doctor it up although you shouldn't have had to at that price. I'm so sorry that stupid long Covid keeps rearing its head. Bah!!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Margaret, your feedback is always important to me and I'm very glad we're friends. I'm actually having a pretty good day today post-covid wise, and I sure hope you're feeling better yourself.
DeleteBoy, your dish sure looks smothered.
ReplyDeleteI checked the menu. There is certainly a lot of fried stuff on it. I avoid places that have vast number of choices. It usually means they don’t do any of them well.
Given the choices, I’d have gone with Evvie’s club sandwich (and some wine).
I have reached the age of a couple of months short of 80 and I’ve never been to a “gentleman’s club”.
Thanks Peter, and you're certainly right that menu had a lot of "not great" stuff. More & more I wish I'd gotten Evvie's club! Had a laugh at your gentleman's club remark. I've never been to one either!
DeleteI like dkzody's take on the restaurant...it was a big group! Your remake looked good!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dianne! And yes I lucked out with that remake 🙂🙂↕️
DeleteI'm so sorry you are still dealing with those headaches. I wish this awful disease would disappear!!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you were able to go on another outing. I think the restaurant was a disappointing choice, but it isn't the restaurant - it's the terrific company! I was very confused with your dishes. I bet you were shocked when they were set in front of you. I am amazed what fabulous dishes you were able to create with the ingredients. Your dishes looked very appetizing.
I am laughing with tears running down my face about your conversation on the way home. You guys are hilarious.
Thank you Miss Merry, gosh I enjoy your comments! You said it about that eggplant parmesan, it was definitely not what I was expecting. And I appreciate your post covid sentiments as well, I'm just glad that your own son-in-law has gotten past this. ❤️🙂
DeleteWhat a touching and vivid storyfilled with humor, honesty, and resilience.
ReplyDeleteEven though the meal disappointed, your spirit and the company of friends truly shined through. Gilbert and the raspberry caper had me smiling, and the 1957 DeSoto sighting? A cherry on top!
Thank you for sharing your day with such warmth
Thank you Asep, you are very kind and certainly have a way with words! 🙂
DeleteDoug, Your home dressed left overs looks good! The restaurant presentation, not so much!! So glad that in spite of the Covid, that you manage to get out; good for you!!!
ReplyDeleteMike TX
Thank you Mike, this was much appreciated. I sure hope you're well. 🙂
DeleteI’m doing fine, thanks. I’ve been out in Arizona for little while, and getting some golf in. Will be Texas bound this week. Take good care of yourself and keep hanging in there.
DeleteDug, going out with friends is almost always fun. We don't do it enough... but when we do, it's great. And when we went to our fav Italian restaurant last week, we took friends there to share it with them... and one of them got the eggplant parmigiana which I was told was fantastic. And the people there are from Italy and play Italian music and come and talk to you at your table... fun place. But it is good that you got two meals out of it... and enjoyed the second. As for your conversation on the way home - (IMO) most "gentlemen's clubs" are not meant for gentlemen. ; )
ReplyDeleteRian my dear friend, thank you for this fun and sweet message. It's the last thing I read before turning out my light and it really made me smile. I have a strong hunch your friend's eggplant was more authentic than mine, and I agree with you regarding those gentlemen clubs! 😄😄
DeleteThat looks really good. I haven’t been to the Rockefeller I’ll have to try it. I went to the Brown Derby once with the love of my life boyfriend. I thought I was fancy then. That was a nice night. I love seeing pictures of you all out and about. You look like you are having fun.
ReplyDeleteBeth
Thanks very much Beth, wow the Brown Derby! Well to be very honest this was not one of our better outings, I don't see myself returning here anytime soon. But I would agree that being with these people above is always fun. They're like a second family. 🙂
DeleteOften times it's not the PLACE but rather the COMPANY. Good friends can make any place better. There are times Ladies Who Lunch pick a place I'm not happy with, but I go and make the best of it, and I NEVER complain. And I still tip well. Life is short and we really need to have a good time and make the best of every opportunity we have to LIVE.
DeleteThanks dkzody, well said. I very much agree, I'm in it for the company of friends more than anything. It's why I eat some of those lunches at the center. :^)
DeleteIt's a shame you gained all that weight back. What happened? You and Marry need to switch places do you think? I'm just teasing ya Doug don't get mad. Kimberly says hello and you look happy. Paul
ReplyDeleteHey Paul--I didn't gain back everything. I lost almost 50 lbs last year and gained back 23 lbs, almost half. I'm going to lose it but until then, I like myself just fine. Hope you're good and love to Kimberly :^)
DeleteHi Doug, l am sorry you keep having these post covid relapses. But glad you were able to push through and enjoy the outing with your friends. Like Florence I think it has been a year since I have been in a restaurant. I am too cheap, ahem, frugal to spend money on food I can make at home. But when one of my girlfriends comes to stay she does enjoy going out for lunch so we do. Chuck is turning 65 in December so has already signed up for OAS (old age security) and has to sign up for his Canada Pension next month. Where did the years go?? He was 21 when we started dating!😆😆 Hope you are having a good day today Doug.❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin
Robin I was hoping you'd leave a comment and this is precisely why--thanks so much, as always. Haha listen I am the same as you regarding restaurants. I'm not a great cook but I do prefer my own cooking to them and this pricey eggplant is exactly why!! I only go to be with Evvie, Mary, Deb, Elaine. I just love them. That is wonderful to hear about Chuck (I can't believe he's going to be 65) but 44 years together, amazing! I hope he's doing good and you too my friend. <3 <3 (those are supposed to be hearts) :^)
