Top 9 reasons I know I’m getting old, Special Homecoming 2021 Edition

My sister Shawn recently took her 16 year old daughter Sophia shopping for her 2021 Homecoming dress.  As my niece tried on several of them, my sister emailed these pics to me.

Eye rolling smile                   Surprised smile                    Crying face

I may not be in touch with the times, but she looks like she’s been invited to a wing-ding at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy mansion!

Just for the heck of it, here’s a photo of some girls in their fomal dresses from 1979, the year I graduated high school.

I miss the styles then, but are any of these girls the second smartest in their class?  Sophia is!

  1. Good for Sophia! Smart is the best attribute! And while in her prime, she should be proud of her looks and shine like a new penny. The gold dress she tried on at bottom right is my favourite.

  2. Thanks Florence! She is a Teen Brainiac, but she works hard for it. I still wish she'd been homeschooled though. šŸ™

  3. Your niece has a beautiful figure and looks very good in those dresses. But I love the gowns of 1979, the year I got engaged to be married.

    1. Thank you Gigi! And let's hear it for 1979 :^) That's wonderful.

  4. Great job on school, Sophia! Those are beautiful dresses and nowadays teenagers are much less modest about showing off their bodies. Ask me what I saw as a high school teacher; there were days I wanted to rip my eyes out.

    1. Thanks very much Margaret, I do know that younger people today aren't as modest, maybe because they're healthier and know better too. My gosh I can't imagine what you probably saw though!

    2. Let's just say that I was exposed (see what I did there?) to many body parts that I didn't want to see and that it was embarrassing.

  5. With all due respect, Doug, your niece is obviously smarter than you, and I'd bet she dresses better than you do too! (But hey, that's what you want, isn't it!?)

    1. Well Tom, she's a young woman so she's certainly more motivated than I am! She's taller than me too :^)

  6. Dear ApacheDug, old or not, the real issue is, young women with lovely figures will inevitably grow older; their figures will thicken. Yeah, you can join a gym, and battle time, but time always wins. As the years pass, young women - who've been brainwashed into wearing scant clothing - may have a very hard time in, 15-some years, to making the change into clothing that isn't so revealing. Sadly, some old/er women just give up and go frump. Btw, those 70s gowns are way more age-friendly ... Bingo, the fashion designers - who despise folks (especially women) over 40 - are very much aware of that.

  7. Congrats on your very smart, pretty niece. Be proud uncle Doug. I liked that first one the best.

  8. Your niece Sophia is both beautiful and smart, what a winning combination! Styles have changed so much since the 1970s. The students look so much older and more sophisticated now. I graduated in 1970 and my prom dress was the style of the ones you show here. Back then it was special to wear the long "formals" to prom. You mentioned home schooling. Both of my grandchildren were homeschooled through graduation and it worked out well for them. These days there are homeschooling organizations so they can have proms and graduation ceremonies like the schools.

I know you are proud of Sophia and you should be!

    1. Dear Bonnie, i had attended my husband's 50 year class reunion. There were pictures of the class - taken in 1960. The graduation they were celebrating was from the 8th grade, but those kids looked more like 18 or 19 than 13 or 14. Anticipating, looking forward to adulthood was written on their faces. One of the girls was from a family, obviously too poor to provide her a white dress - like the other girls were wearing. Guess what, the poor girl stood in the front row. Pictures tell a 1000 words? It was like, poor or not, she was one of them.

  9. Thanks very much Bonnie! Well, I'm still sold on the 70s look and probably will be till the day I die! That is wild about your grandchildren being homeschooled. I only used to tease my sister about homeschooling Sophia because I didn't want any boys chasing her. Too late now! šŸ™

  10. Styles change with the times. I like the green dress with the thigh split, it looks really nice on your niece.

  11. Sophia is gorgeous and she’s got a beautiful figure that can carry off any style. Styles do change with the times. sigh…
My daughter went to look for her wedding dress with friends, not with me. I thought she’d choose a dress like mine that had long sleeves and a high neckline. When she brought us to look at what she’d decided on, I was shocked (I mean surprised) to see that it was a dress with spaghetti straps.Ah well… she looked very nice. And then I saw that all her friends had strapless or spaghetti straps. The times do keep moving on…
You are a wonderful, doting uncle, Doug. Sophia is smart and has her own sense of style. I know you’re all very proud of her. I sure would be.

    1. Thanks for sharing that wedding dress story, Kay! Yes, you get it! I guess these younger people know and are comfortable with what's in style for them. As for doting uncle, I wish I could say that but this kid has outgrown me. I still love her with all my heart though.

  12. Hi Doug, my goodness, Sophia is beautiful! I love her in the middle blue dress in the bottom row but she looks gorgeous in every one of the dresses.
My prom dress looked like the yellow one on the left in your photo except it was white. A hand me down from when my sister had graduated a few years earlier! I didn’t care much about clothes then and was happy to be spared shopping with my Mum who loved clothes shopping.
I found Sue and Margaret comments very interesting. Modesty does seem to have gone out the window. I live a couple blocks from a high school and my goodness, some of the clothing shouldn’t be classified as clothing! My old age showing I guess.šŸ˜†
    Have a great weekend Doug!

    1. Thanks very much Robin, and I think my niece chose the dress you liked best on the bottom! That's very interesting that you live so close to a high school, at least you see firsthand what's in style. :^) As for showing your old age, welcome to the club my friend!

  14. Dug, my daughter did the same when my oldest granddaughter went shopping for her prom dress. She sent me all the pictures - which were definitely interesting. They were all long.. and some strapless. It did make me think how times have changed since I graduated in 1963. But I don't think my granddaughter ever got to wear the dress as it was the first year of the pandemic... and everything was shut-down. But your niece does look beautiful. I think I like the green one best.

    1. Rian, thanks for the kind words (and the green dress was my sister's favorite too). Well, I've seen girls' formals from 1963 and they sure were different from my era in 79! Maybe the whole dress thing will recycle back to the 1950s. :^) Anyway--I sure am sorry about the pandemic affecting your own granddaughter's high school dance memories, my gosh what a shame. I hope things fare better for her this year.

  15. Oh my, she’s lovely (and smart according to you – good combination).
What struck me was that I could see her face only in the first picture. I assume the phone in front of the face is standard operating procedure these days.

  17. I'm with you Doug! I'm fiscally and daughterly dress conservative! Well you might not be the former but we agree on the latter! Fortunately, my daughter is fairly conservative in her dress without my input but it is still less conservative than what the girls of my generation wore at the time.
