So what if I lose everything—I think I’ve found the perfect chair

Have you ever seen something and knew instantly you must have it?   For myself, it’s a rare thing.  I’m usually on the fence about most things, especially when it involves furniture or spending money.

But since moving into my apartment in April 2017, I’ve been on the lookout for a particular leather chair.  And I’m pretty sure I found it, at the worst possible time.

There would be no compromises.  It HAD to be full grain, none of this “genuine leather” or bonded leather stuff.  Camel or tan only, no black or browns or burgundy.  No rivets, no highback-Wingbacks.  I didn’t want one of those overstuffed recliners with a kangaroo pouch sewn into it’s side for books and remotes either.

(Yes I know they’re comfortable, but I wanted something more compact, stylish, fitting a city apartment.)

I found something close at Pottery Barn, and requested leather samples.  But they were all too dark or cowpokey, and I would soon discover PB had an awful reputation with their leather chairs being outsourced (taking 3-4 months), doubled in price and having shoddy workmanship.

So I stopped looking.  A couple years passed, and then I came across this chair a month ago and knew it was the one.  I checked the depth, heighth, width, weight capacity, manufacturer, everything.  It’s a full grain, soft Italian leather with 31 customer reviews, half of them containing pictures, all of them praising it’s quality.  But there was one problem:

It was priced at $1,399.99.   I couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for a chair.

Then a couple weeks ago, I saw the chair had gone on sale for $200 off, $1199.99.  I sent the photo at the top to 3 people I knew I could trust their opinion.

My sister Shawn said “It looks exactly like the chair you’ve been looking for a long time.  I hope you don’t talk yourself out of buying it!”

My blog-friend Margaret said “It’s gorgeous and will go perfectly with your navy blue sofa.”

My friend Danielle said “It’s beautiful but peta!”

All 3 of their responses (even Danielle and her hippie squawk) was actually quite helpful.  I just needed some kind of… I dunno, sign to tell me to go for it.

Then I’m watching the evening news a couple nights ago, and they did another one of those “your average 401K investor” alerts because of the bear market we’ve fallen into, and stock portfolios losing 25% in value since January.

I haven’t looked at my own investments since January 10, when I sold some shares to keep my 2-year safe bucket full.  So I opened my account…

My portfolio is down $171,000.00 since January.  I’d estimated the loss would be half that amount.  I felt dizzy, this was scary.

Unlike most of the other bloggers I know, I do NOT have a partner, pension, annuity, equity, insurance or social security to fall back on.  (I’m not even eligible to claim social security for another 16 months.)  What if I lost that amount again, a couple times over?  My goose would be cooked.

I have my safe-bucket.  If I stick to a budget, I should have enough to carry me thru this bear market (if they last on average two years).  As for the chair… that’s the LAST thing I needed right now.

So this past Saturday I went on their website to have a final look and see if it was still on sale.  It was, and even lower in price—the chair was now $919.00, down $480 since the first time I saw it!   I couldn’t move my fingers fast enough.

The chair will arrive sometime between June 28 and July 4—I’m glad I didn’t wait, the sale ended yesterday and is now back at regular price.

If I lose the rest of my money and wind up homeless, I’ll move into the alley behind the Tiffany (my apartment building) and appoint myself King of Cherry Alley—and this chair will become my throne!

  1. The chair looks great and that is quite a bargain, I think. I look forward to seeing you sitting in it in your living room. :-)

    1. Thank you DJan, this was just what I needed to hear. I love a good bargain. I can't wait to show it. 🙂

  2. I have never regretted buying something that is of excellent quality and I had to pay a premium for.

I haven't looked at my portfolio either and don't plan on doing so anytime soon. Maybe when it gets closer to what feels like the bottom I might. Until then, I have been plowing money into our mortgage. I might get it paid off this year, 20 years early.

    1. Thanks Ed, and good for you on both things. I regret looking at mine. And that would be great about your mortgage. 👍

  3. Well, at least you have a sense of humor! That's a beautiful chair. Leather is easier to clean than fabric. I have leather furniture for that reason. Investing in stocks is risky so I stay out of the market. Gigi hawaii

    1. Haha, thank you Gigi. Yes, I like your leather set! As for stocks, I know they're risky and can cause real headaches. But until this past year, mine were doing very well. I just wish I had converted the retirement funds into something a lot more safer when I had the chance, darn it. 😐

  4. My heart would have stopped at spending that kind of money on a chair, even if it was a sale price, but Tim and I were talking about it awhile back. We all have something we value, and can justify these expenses.

    Yours was this chair.

    Tim's is his truck.

Me? Well...it seems to be grandkids.

You go, Dug! You've worked a life time to plunk your behind in this tan full grained Italian leather chair.

  5. It is a nice looking chair, Dug. I hope it's as comfortable as it looks. But I too think you did right... (investments be damned). We're watching funds drop too, but instead of being extra cautious, I find myself getting the things we need now (within reason of course) as if this goes on, we won't be able to get them later. (and yes! there could be some satisfaction sitting in the alley IN YOUR LEATHER CHAIR!)

    1. Haha, thanks Rian! Ugh, I sure am sorry you're having to worry about investments too, but I very much like your attitude about it. What you wrote here, that's how I feel. Better now than later. And I don't know why, but I can't stop chuckling at your alley comment! 😄👍

  6. Good purchase, Doug! If it makes you feel any thriftier, I just put a $5 K deposit (25%) on four new doors. And your chair will make you a lot happier than doors (which will take 9 months for delivery).

    1. Thanks Florence! Well, doors sound a lot more practical than my leather throne--you're going to have to do a blog about those you know. 🙂

  7. Have you sat in it? I hope it is all you want. As fast as the price was dropping I would have probably waited a bit to see if it would drop lower but regardless, it sounds like a deal. Looking forward to seeing you sitting in it comfortably wearing a mile wide grin.
That is sickening about your portfolio. They always say don't panic but that is a lot scary. Hope for everyone's sake things pick up again.

    1. Thanks very much Patti, I WISH I could've sat in it first but it was an online purchase. The seller is a trustworthy one, as were the reviews. They weren't phony, so I feel good about the chair. I just never spent so much without it being a big couch or something, but I intend to have this chair the rest of my life. The portfolio loss is really scary, I've seen drops but nothing like this. One good thing about getting older, I know better than to sit around and worry about it!

  8. I love the chair! It's beautiful, classy and looks comfortable. I haven't been paying much attention to the stock market lately; perhaps I should?

    1. Margaret thanks again for your advice about the chair, I took it to heart! The stock market, if you don't have to look at it I wouldn't. I had to know what my financial situation was before plunking down $1,000 for a chair, but as I didn't let it stop me... All we can do is wait it out. 🧐

  9. Nice chair! Sometimes we need to splurge a wee bit on ourselves. For me it's travel. I have those funds separate from my pension (which thankfully is a defined benefit), and when I checked today I've decided I'll have to stop travelling a lot sooner than I'd hoped.

  11. Glad you found the chair you've wanted for so long and could take advantage of that sale price.

  12. Doug that is a gorgeous chair! I'm so glad you went ahead and got it. I learned a long time ago that if I found something I really loved and could use, I should go ahead and get it. There have been too many times I missed out on things because I waited too long. That chair looks and sounds like good quality and as such it will last you a long time making it worth the cost.

This bear market IS scary! I have two 401Ks and I looked at them a couple of weeks ago and now I'm afraid to look again! 🙃

    PS
Now you need a matching ottoman so you can rest your feet!

    1. Thanks Bonnie! And yep, me too--I've often waited too long to get something and wound up losing out. I thought about that big time here. And we think the same way, as I really want a matching ottoman for this chair haha! I'm surprised they don't offer one. And I'm sorry about your 401ks, all we can do is wait it out..🙂👍

  13. It's a beautiful, beautiful chair. I love the colour. I agree that you need an ottoman for your feet. I had trouble choosing my overstuffed recliners, because I'm short and all chairs these days are far too deep in the seat, but all the smaller ones that would fit me better were so ugly. So I saved for the one I wanted and when I went to buy they were having an end of financial year sale and I was able to but two. I don't need two, as it turns out, and they take up a lot of room, but if I ever have company there will be somewhere to sit.

    1. Thanks River, and yep I agree about the ottoman! I like your story here about the two chairs, I wouldn't mind having two of these chairs myself. 🙂

  14. Doug, what an absolutely gorgeous chair! I love the simplicity of it. I am not a fan of poufy leather seating so this would be the one I would choose too. I am terrible when it comes to picking out items. I always say to Chuck “I will know it when I see it” Recently we were looking for something to hang in our redone powder room. Chuck kept asking me what did I want. I said my “I will know….” We were at an antique store a few weeks back and I spied a 1930’s Pear’s Soap advertisement, all original. It is lovely. It looks wonderful in the powder room.
Looking forward to seeing your gorgeous chair in your living room!
    Have a good week Doug.❤️

    1. Hi Robin thanks very much for your feedback, I was hoping I'd hear from you! I think we share similar tastes, I thought you'd like this chair too. And I like your phrase to Chuck, you'll know it when you see it. That sums up half the stuff I own! And your Pears Soap sign sounds really nice, how cool that it's an original. You need to restart your blog and give us a home tour. 🙂. Well thanks again Robin, hope your week ahead is a very good one too. ♥️👍

  15. Yes, that's a nice chair and looks comfy. I've seen "pretend it's almost real leather" and it just seems yucky. Yep, you need a footstool for elevating those feet and legs. Use something temporarily, even if it doesn't match. Can you contact the company and see what they have? The cheap ones at WalMart used to be $40 and are now even more. (Those have a removeable lid, so you can put your blankets in them.) You could buy the material and have one made, or recover a cheap one. Ask a local, old-time upholstery shop. They probably have some ideas, or even a coordinating patterned material that will look nice. Linda in Kansas

    1. Thank you Linda, and thanks for the suggestions. I was looking at some on Wayfair, but I think I'm going to wait and see how much room I have to get around once the chair is here and I get my coffee table in here too. It would be nice to have one though. 🙂

    2. You've got it! Use the coffee table for your feet. (That was always permitted in my house. Guess it's a horrid sin in other houses.) You're right, don't put so much furniture around your feet that you trip and fall on it. It's precarious getting a tad older. Linda in Kansas

    3. Well nowwww...haha, we'll see! My neighbor Opal said the same thing, she uses her coffee table for a footstool. I don't know if that's me! 🤔😄
