Gentlemen, your mission should you choose to accept it; proceed to Mission Barbecue

This past Wednesday, several of us from the Senior Center took one of our bi-monthly lunch outings to Mission BBQ, in Robinson Township.

Dennis & me, waiting for our ride to Mission BBQ

I was a little surprised to discover there’s a couple of them in the greater Pittsburgh area, and 150 franchises nationwide; I’d never even heard of them.

I’m so glad I stopped in Lincoln Barbershop on the way to the center to tell Rose (my barber) where I was going.  She warned me the food was salty, to taste before reaching for the salt & pepper.  Boy was she right!

To be honest, I almost didn’t go; my friends Mary & Debbie elected not to join us, and my girl Evvie is dealing with some health issues (her sciatica).  I haven’t seen her for a couple weeks now.

Evvie, if you’re reading this… I love and miss you, get better soon.

Well, I had Dennis to keep me entertained & hopefully vice-versa, so away we went.

Here’s the place from the outside.

Inside, the walls were covered in police, military & firefighting badges, gear, helmets, photos, etc.; from the ceiling hung LED tvs airing patriotic videos.  “GOD BLESS THE USA” country music played loudly and nonstop.  (The music was driving me a little bonkers.)

This was not a full service restaurant.  The minute you walk in the door, you’re part of a line headed towards a row of cash registers.  Just like an old school McDonalds.  You give them your order (good thing I studied the menu the night before) and then shuffle down the line and fill your own drink cup.

Before you even get to your table, your name is called to come back & pick up your food.  No plates, it’s all served on heavy brown paper on sheet metal trays.  I got the Big Brisket Sandwich, hand-cut fries & coleslaw. It was piping hot & perfectly delicious.

STILL… at 12 noon, the televisions suddenly displayed American flags, and everyone was asked to stop what they were doing, stand at attention and salute (or pledge allegiance to) their nearest flag while the national anthem played.

I have nothing against showing respect for our men & women in uniform, but the “forced patriotism” in the middle of lunch felt a little disconcerting, to say the least.

There was a couple hitches with this outing.  First, we arrived & finished so quickly, we were ready to go by 12 noon.  But Access (our shuttle ride) wasn’t returning to get us until 2pm!  I called & requested an early pickup, but they never showed.

So the group of us spent 2 hours outside the restaurant, watching people coming and going while chewing the fat.  I talked about my brisket sandwich so much, Dennis went back inside and ordered one to take home.  Later, he asked me if I’d seen the urinal in the men’s room and when I said no, suggested I check it out.

(It was a big metal trough in the floor that made a drumming sound while you’re going.  Can you believe I’m sharing that?)

The second hitch was the ride home.  I forgot to select ‘Drop off at home’ on the sign-up sheet, and Access does NOT bend the rules; so I had to ride that damn shuttle back and forth in front of my apartment building 3 times while the (new) driver dropped off other riders.  The other riders even said “Doug lives right here, just let him off!”

Nope—I had to ride back to the center and walk the mile home.  Oh well, I suppose I needed the exercise anyway!

  1. Even if the food is good, I don't think you would find me in there. Sorry about that long wait afterwards, and having to walk home anyway!

    1. Thank you DJan, I felt much the same way. Loved the sandwich but I don't know if it was worth all the noise & hassle

  2. That was a good learning experience for you. And, we all should keep learning, no matter how old we get. That's the best I can say for the whole shenanigans.

  3. When I saw Mission BBQ, I started chuckling before I started reading, wondering if you would mention the faux patriotism. We've never eaten there, but before the pandemic we used to "mall walk" in a nearby town. There's a Mission at the mall and we had the unfortunate experience of being there several times at noon. They actually blast the anthem into the mall area next to their storefront and expect everyone coming and going through the rest of the mall to stop and stand at attention. It's more than disconcerting (to use your very polite word.😉)

    1. Wow! Thanks for sharing Bobi, I was clueless. To be very honest, I thought the place was going to be Southwest mission related, like a monastery. Not a military fetish place. It was pretty intense!

  4. Wow, what a series of surprises and not all good ones. The loud country music would have had me hustling back out the door pretty quick.

    1. Thanks Florence--of all the 'hitches', that loud country music was the worst. Loved the sandwich but my ears took a pounding!

  5. At first glance I thought your tee shirt said European!
Sounds like you made the best of it , even when curve balls arrived .
    When’s your next adventure?

    1. Siobhan, I wish my t-shirt did say that! I feel like I'm doing free advertising for LL Bean! :^) Thank you for the nice comment here, and our next outing is the Narcisi Winery next week. We were there once before in Sept 2023, it's a family owned place and really special. I'm currently dealing with another LC relapse so praying it goes away soon. I hope all is good with you.

  6. Wow, that place is quite something. Full of Trumpers too? (except you of course) The shuttle experience would make me a little nuts but rules are rules I guess. Sorry that more of your friends couldn't attend!

    1. Margaret, I figured it was a MAGA crowd, but was afraid to ask! All in all the food was good but this is definitely a place you want to get that food to go. :^)

  7. LOL, I have seen "MIssion Barbeque" but did not know about the music and saluting. No thank you (even though that sandwich looks DIVINE). I'm sorry the ladies couldn't join you. And how frustrating to ride around in circles past your apartment! I can't believe he couldn't have blinked and let you out the door.
I really hate loud music in a restaurant. A neighboring city built a "5 Guys" a few years ago and people raved about the burgers. The night we went the music was cranked up so loud my head was pounding. People have told me that it wasn't that loud when they went, but I am not taking another chance.
We have a MAGA group in our area that visits restaurants in a group in our county area, supposedly to support them. I am not sure if they make reservations or just show up. But they like to stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance and then march around the restaurant singing the national anthem. If they ever come in a restaurant where I am eating, I am walking out.

    1. Hey Miss Merry, thanks for your wonderful feedback here! That traveling MAGA group in your area--you gotta be kidding me, isn't this how Nazism started? Gosh I hope I never run into them!

    2. Admitting to belonging to a MAGA group is pretty brave…Beth

  8. The food looks delicious but the atmosphere would drive me mad. Despite being partially deaf, I can't abide loud music. I have a hard enough time hearing, let alone such a distraction. Never mind the standing at attention...
Silly driver, it makes no sense that he wouldn't simply drop you off at home.

    1. Thank you Maebeme, and I'm sorry about your own hearing. Well, I can abide loud music but I sure do dislike it while eating. And I'm not paying someone to stand at attention again. This is a place where you want your food to go.

    2. I haven’t heard of Mission BBQ either, not surprising as they don’t seem to be over here. However, they didn’t seem to be anywhere whenever I was in your country. Okay, that was mainly the San Francisco bay and Portland, Oregon areas.

I’m a fan of brisket but I’m not a fan of salt. I hope it wasn’t too salty.

I wonder what would have happened if I had been there at noon. There’s no way I’d have stood for your national anthem, saluted and pledged. I don’t even do it for my own (we don’t have a pledge).
Would I have been bundled out by “patriots”? Roughed up for not being conforming?
I really wouldn’t wish to find out.

You’d have been okay on an Australian bus. The driver would have dropped you off if you’d asked (which you did). Rules are useful, but not always mandatory.

    3. Hi Peter, I hope all is good with you. Well, it's my understanding that Mission BBQ does not enforce people to stand for the anthem (though when I was there, I didn't see a single person remaining seated). The brisket was salted, but not too much.. it really was the best brisket I've ever eaten. As for my Access bus.. I think she wouldn't bend the rules for me as she was a brand new driver. Ah well...

    4. I doubt any of your dread woud have happened, Peter. A little too much hype has probably has been sent your way. I'm not MAGA in an activist sense but do believe our country had room for improvement. I know many who would claim MAGA-ism and they are a docile live and let live bunch. Kim in PA

  12. I wonder if all Mission BBQ’s are patriotic like that? My first husband was in the Army and we had to stand before a movie on post. And he would race off post when he got off bc the flags were lowered at 5:00 and all soldiers had to pull over, get out, stand at attention and salute. Anyway, your senior center is great , glad you are enjoying it! Joyce

    1. That's interesting, thanks for sharing about your husband Joyce. As a matter of fact, all mission BBQs do this standing at attention at noon. To be honest, I don't know why it bothered me at the time. I'm okay with it now I guess! 🙂

    2. I should have added that it’s normal on a military installation, but it would have bothered me at a restaurant.

  13. Hahaha. Man, are you serious??? I can't believe this. Sounds like a Trump restaurant what with the patriotism thing and what not. And that urinal! Wonder what the ladies bathroom looks like.
