Coffee & pills, it does a body good (well, mine at least)

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday.  Someone in my building saw my box of Keurig k-cups in the lobby this week and asked if I drank a lot of coffee.  5 cups a day, so yes I guess I do.

Why don't you just get a regular coffeemaker?  It would probably save you some money.

I don't have many luxuries in this life, but I love a fresh cup of coffee.  And I enjoy different brands of the brew throughout the day.

And for the record, I take the pills mentioned below with a full glass of water; I'm just reminded to take them when it's almost time for coffee!

What I'm downing:  Folgers Medium Roast & a golden D3 vitamin gel-cap
When I'm doing it:   8:00 - 10:00 AM (2 cups, typically)
What I'm thinking:  Lord, thank you for letting me be here another day.  Now, do I want an egg & toast for breakfast, or cereal or what?

What I'm downing:  Caribou Blend Medium Roast & a Magnesium Glycinate horse pill (these suckers are big!)
When I'm doing it:   1-2:00 PM
What I'm thinking:  Boy, this Caribou is roasty; I'll sip a little now and the rest after I get home from the store, I need more Coffeemate.

What I'm downing:  Tim Horton's Original Blend & Physicians Choice 60 Billion Probiotics capsule
When I'm doing it:   7:00 - 9:00 PM
What I'm thinking:  Nothing like a cup of Tim Hortons after dinner!  I should make Tim's my all-day coffee, it's my favorite.

What I'm downing:  McCafe Decaf Medium Roast & 10 mg Amlodipine for my BP
When I'm doing it:   11:00 PM  (I know, I know--it's late.  But this is decaf)
What I'm thinking:  Okay Doug, one episode of Star Trek and then off to bed!

I didn't drink quite so much before long covid, but I've found hot coffee throughout my day really soothes things.  Do you have any favorite brands?

  1. Morning Doug, I don’t think 5 cups of coffee a day is a lot. Spread over about 15 hours it isn’t that much. I have never been a coffee drinker. Tried it once as a teenager and didn’t care for it. My Mum in her prime would easily drink ten cups a day. I learned how to make her coffee at a very young age.😆 She lived to be 91 so obviously didn’t harm her. Enjoy your coffee!❤️

  2. Gigi Hawaii. Hi, Doug. I recently bought a Nespresso from Amazon. I prefer coffee latte over espresso, so I bought a box of Sweet Vanilla and a box of Hazelnut coffee for the Nespresso. Delicious! Just love the frothy cream on top. Take care.

  3. Hi Doug. I'm a tea drinker myself. I envy your ability to consume caffeine at 7:00 at night. 1:00 PM is my time limit, otherwise I have trouble sleeping at night. Caffeine is a wonderful drug! It gives a boost to help us get through the day. The cookies look yummy!

    1. Thank you Carole and fyi, I do drink tea too, just not as much lately. I'm surprised how many people I know that say they can't drink caffeine after the afternoon, I guess my body is just accustomed to it. Those cookies came from the freezer and the Single Seniors Holiday Lunch I attended a couple weeks ago :^)

  4. Good evening Doug.

From what I have been through, and probably for most people, five cups of coffee a day is considered a lot. As far as I am concerned, Health experts usually recommend a maximum of about 400 mg of caffeine daily, which equals roughly four regular cups of coffee. Drinking five cups may push you over that limit and cause side effects such as anxiety, restlessness, heart palpitations, stomach discomfort, or sleep problems.

However, caffeine tolerance varies. Some people handle it well, especially if the coffee is weak or spread throughout the day. Still, drinking that much every day is not ideal long term, and reducing intake slightly is generally healthier.

    1. Thank you Asep, I appreciate what you said. Well, for the longest time I never drank more than 3 cups daily--just been wrestling with a chronic health condition lately and hot coffee seems to help, But I agree with you, long term isn't a good idea. I hope you're well, I'm glad to hear from you :^)

  5. Sadly I had to give up coffee when I retired. I had been drinking many cups of coffee a day. Always Nabob drip coffee....It was my favourite. I could only drink it in the morning As I found I had difficulty falling and staying asleep. But I was having stomach issues, had to have a biopsy and though there wasn't anything serious the doc was adamant that I quit drinking coffee. Now I drink tea but no more than a couple of cups a day. If I want something got I drink got water...Now I know I'm old!
You certainly do enjoy a variety of coffee!

    1. Maebeme, thank you for sharing and I am so sorry you have to give coffee up. I really should cut back. I have to tell you, I never drank coffee until my mid-30s, and you know how I got started? My grandma's doctor told her she had to stop, but I didnt know this. She asked me to buy her a coffeemaker for Christmas back in 1996. After my dad told me to return it, I put it in my closet and then one wintry night I got curious and... oh well!

  6. I am Mrs. Coffee. I used to be a tea drinker, even when I was an office worker. Although I would often wash the coffee pot at the end of the day, I never trusted the community pot, who was making the coffee or who was washing the pot when it wasn't me. I also worked in rural locations and preferred to use bottled water in a ceramic cup in a microwave. The individual serving makers weren't available in those days.
Now that I am a spoiled lady of leisure, I have a coffee maker - Mr Merry. He rises at 4 am and makes his pot of Maxwell House half caf (our nod to our age). There is usually coffee left when I get up at 7 am on school mornings, later on days off. I drink coffee all day. The first cup has 2% milk since I drink the milk with my pills and add coffee after. The next cup is black. The rest of the day (which sometimes includes a second pot) I flavor with a shelf in my fridge, flavored creamers, syrups, etc. Usually for Christmas I make specialty coffees like my own Peppermint Mocha with Aldi Peppermint Mocha creamer, chocolate whipped topping, chocolate syrup and Christmas sprinkles. This Christmas I was mixed 1/2 coffee with 1/2 water and flavoring it with cough drops.
I drink coffee in the evening too. If there is a habit that is going to shorten my life, it will be my enjoyment in a hot cup of coffee.

  7. Coffee is definitely an individual preference. I like really good, really dark, really strong coffee. Armenian coffee (with a thick layer of fine grounds at the bottom of the cup) makes me very happy. However, I have it maybe 3x a year.

I do like strong coffee at home, too, and make my mochas with that strong coffee. I use chocolate soy milk for the mocha part, and Terry orders Peet's French roast for most of our daily coffee.

Occasionally we make espresso as we have a great machine for that as well as a French press. I rarely drink coffee any where but home because of how particular I am about my coffee.

  8. Coffee is an interesting subject, Dug. I was told to give up coffee and tea a few years ago because of a bladder condition... but having been born in New Orleans where we probably got coffee in our baby bottles (with lots of milk)... couldn't do it. So I drink a small expresso cup in the morning (steal it from DJ's cup ), add a little butter (makes it easier on the gut) and another in the afternoon (sometimes English or Irish tea in the afternoon). I'm not supposed to have tea either but use a small teacup and pour half of it out, add cream... and I'm good. We use Keurig's dunkin donut Columbian (and get it from Amazon). I think coffee is a comfort and you shouldn't have to give up all your comforts... there are ways to get around it. Don't know if 5 cups is a lot, but do know that growing up the coffee pot was on all day at home. Do drink our coffee black... although lately I've become addicted to Paris Baguette's Cold Brew Vanilla Cream. It's so-oo good! Don't know how you can drink decaff. Tried it in both coffee and tea - yuck!

    1. My gosh, these comments have been awesome including yours, thank you for sharing Rian. I so agree that no one should have to give up all of their comforts, well unless you're talking booze and cigarettes! But you sound like you have things down to a comfortable science and now you have me curious about the Dunkin' donut Colombian. I am going to have to try that, always looking for a new one. By the way I had to tell you, I absolutely hate decaffeinated coffee but I read a review on Epicurious a while back they gave High Praise to McDonald's McCafe decaffeinated. I really wanted to enjoy a late night cup of coffee so I bought it. It's not as good as the other brands I drink, but it is definitely the best decaf I've ever tasted.

  9. My goto cup'o'joe is Folger's Colombian. I stopped looking at price years ago. A hot creamy morning mug (while watching a recording of last night's Jeopardy episode) just makes my day easier deal with. (No matter how many questions I miss 😂). So when I met a fella at the coffee aisle a couple weeks ago who was reaching up to get some coffee cans down for me (always on the highest shelf, what's up with that?) he himself was holding a big can of coffee he didn't really like, but that his good coffee was a few bucks more. I looked at his sad face and told him forget the couple of bucks. Buy your favorite or for the next 2 months you will sit down in the morning, look at a second-choice coffee and kick yourself. We're both too old to settle! We settle for so much anymore. Ya gotta draw the line! We're not getting any younger. Well, that guy perked up (see what I did there?), laughed and then grabbed his favorite! 'You're right! Thanks for the wake up!' Later in another aisle we met again, his smile still big, and pointed into his cart and said he was taking my advice even further, and had added a pie to his stash. Bottom line, don't mess with people's coffee. Sometimes it's all that gets us through the day. Good on you, Doug. Sure enjoyed your thoughts as you drifted from cup to cup. And glad to see those Christmas cookies and party memories also served up. Happy New Year! Kris in Ohio

  10. I'm the outlier here. I have never had a cup of coffee or an alcoholic drink. Neither has ever appealed to me. Can't tell you how many times people have poured me coffee in restaurants without even asking. When you don't drink coffee or tea, people consider you odd, but I've gotten used to it. 😉

Well, I don't drink alcohol either (I had a "wine slushy" this summer that was my first alcoholic beverage in 15 years) but I can't say I never had one before. As for coffee... it's funny, how do people get hooked on this stuff? Well I CAN say I have never bought a Starbucks coffee--never. So no tea either? My goodness!

  12. I source my coffee from a local coffee shop/roasters, who import beans from all over the world, including northern Australia (I guess that’s not importing, but it is from another state).
They roast the beans themselves. The coffee I get is a blend of Kenyan and Mocha Harari.

I’ve just returned from several days staying with the A.M.’s sister in southwestern Victoria.
She has a machine like yours, I didn’t notice if it was a Keurig or not. My preference was for the strongest espresso (I don’t remember the brand of those either) – I made a double espresso (two pods). That was after lunch.

I like coffee, but unlike you, I don’t drink a great deal of it, just three or four times a week, just a single cup each time and always after lunch.

My beverages of choice for breakfast are orange juice and a cup of tea.

This both did and didn't surprise me, I know you can be a connoisseur with things like this, but I assumed you drank it more regularly. I enjoy orange juice in the mornngs too, but only 3 times a week and with crushed ice. I really should drink more tea. If we don't talk soon, Happy New Year :^)

  13. Okay, Doug. It's me again--your quiet, friendly "healthy voice". I'm just going to speak up and say some unpopular things. (That's what friends do for friends). First, although coffee has shown some health benefits, 5 cups or so per day is a lot for anybody. No way around it. Second, as someone suffering from inflammation issues, have you thought about reducing the amount of microplastics you (and all of us) are consuming daily? Those plastic k-cups along with hot water are releasing microplastics into your system at an alarming rate. And third, three cookies???. (And I won't even get started on Coffeemate!)

    1. Whew! Don my friend, I appreciate your honesty. Well, before the long covid I only drank 2-3 cups a day, tops. Right now, even if it isn't helping my chronic inflammation, it just helps me get thru the day. It very much relieves the burning and soreness on the inside of my mouth & jaw. When I recover from the LC I will probably reduce. The microplastic... gulp, I didn't consider that. I feel guilty already for the garbage these things make. As for those cookies, those were a gift from the recent Single Seniors Christmas lunch, haha! They're all gone now! I hope you have a Happy New Year Don, I'm glad I know you. :^)

  14. Does decaf count as coffee? I don't think 3-4 cups of coffee is unusual. Of course, I live near Seattle and in an extreme coffee culture. I think that getting relief from your symptoms makes it worth it for now. I do my Equal Exchange Mind, Body and Soul for my mocha and Sbux Pike Place Decaf for my later day/night cup(s) which are a winter treat in the evening.

  16. I think I have the same Keurig , mines a space saver. I drink Krispy Kreme, one regular, one decaf per day. Stronger ones give me heartburn. My husband drinks black coffee from the time he wakes up to the time he goes to bed and sleeps like a rock. I think your coffee schedule is like giving yourself little treats throughout the day. Hardly anything is “ healthy” anymore, so enjoy what you want! Joyce
