I can't believe it... 7 recent things I can't believe

1.  I can't believe they released a new Star Trek series on Paramount Plus that I can't bring myself to watch.  I've been a devoted Star Trek fan over 50 years, gobbled up everything with the Trek logo (including some real stinkers in the mix).  But this is beyond saving.  I barely made it thru the first two episodes, it's so bad.  I hope that Paramount puts it out of it's misery, it makes JJ Abrams version of Trek (which was crap) look almost genius in comparison.

2.  I can't believe Melania Trump produced a movie about.. herself?  (I've since learned this thing is a big flop.  Now THAT I can believe.)

3. I can't believe I haven't been in a movie theater since 2013.  I love movies, from the late 1960s thru the 1990s I probably went to the theater once a week.  But I learned a dozen years ago I don't need a big screen--movies at home on my own tv are the best.  (I tend to hit that pause button a lot.)

4.  Speaking of TVs, I can't believe I bought a new one a few months back and it only cost me $233.00, taxes & delivery included.  I also can't believe it's considered small and has a 45" screen.  In 1978 I was working at The Pancake House and saving my money to buy a 13" color tv for $299.00.

But at $2.25 an hour, I ultimately decided it was too expen$ive for my wallet and bought a 13" b&w television instead.

5.  I can't believe it took me 25 minutes to walk to Kuhn's Market yesterday (normally a 10 minute walk).  But since that monster snowfall last weekend, temps have remained in the subzero and single digits and the city discovered 37 of their 80 snow trucks weren't operational.  So my little borough has remained buried in the snow.

I also can't believe UPMC Health Plan just donated $10 million to the city to buy new snow trucks.  It's very generous, but they're notorious for underpaying their employees--which is why UPMC workers are always striking and on the news.

6.  I can't believe my 69 year old neighbor Dee knocked on my door earlier today and asked if I'd send a text to her pharmacy confirming her prescription number & address.  When I asked if her phone was broken, she said "No I got it right here honey.  But I never done a text before.  You probably think I'm a dinosaur, don't you?"  No Dee, I don't.  I'm fairly new to texting myself, around 2 years now.  But I hardly use it, I'm not a fan.

7.  I can't believe Catherine O' Hara is gone.  So sharp, so wicked funny.  She was only 71 years old.  I'm still adjusting to Olivia Newton John's demise, and she's been gone since 2022.  She was only 73.

Rest in peace, Catherine.  Gosh I loved you so much.

  1. You don't text? It's so much better than calling. I text all the time. My grandkids text me (and their grandpa). Our daughter sends us pictures every day with the cats in them and I return the favor. Need a quick answer, text. Need to tell someone you'll be late, text. Tell someone you're not coming, text. Saves lots of time and trouble. If you start using the text feature, you'll be doing more of it. It makes life easier as well as connecting you to people you may not have time to call.

    1. Dkzody I do use it on rare occasion, like my barber this morning to see if she had any openings this week, I just don't like it for chit-chat. It's too tiny for my eyes and my fingers are too big for that little keyboard. 🙂

  2. I agree with dkzody, texting is so much easier and faster, especially if I don't want to get into a lengthy conversation with someone. Of course, it helps if that person actually sees the text...it's easier to ignore than a phone call.
Your $299 television reminds me of my first microwave oven. It was huge and heavy, and I paid nearly $700 for it on sale! Now a small microwave costs $59 at Walmart. Crazy!
I do hope your neighbourhood gets cleared of the snow soon.

    1. Thanks Maebeme oh yes I remember when microwaves were a very premium thing! Well, I remember my boss in 1980 paying $1,000 for a VCR. A couple years later they were less than $200. As for the snow plows we have one out there right now in front of my building, I must say I'm relieved. 😊

  3. Hi Dug! I've never been a Star Trek or Star Wars fan... but I did enjoy the special effects those shows had. And as for Melania's movie, I'm guessing she's as much a narcissist as he is. And her movie is another embarrassment (although I've no intention of seeing it). And we haven't been to a movie theater in years. Watching them at home is definitely better... except some do show better on the big screen (like the original Avatar). And I love texting! I'm not big on phone conversations... so I can text anytime and they can answer when it's convenient. I like that... and we send pics a lot too! Stay safe and warm, Dug... and be careful walking out there... slips can be dangerous.

    1. Thank you Rian! I'm actually surprised you're not a Star Trek fan, it seems "you". (Star Wars is for children!) I liked what you said about Melania (ugh) and you're right, I would've enjoyed Avatar (and Wizard of Oz) on the big screen. And I'm glad you like texting, I guess I'm just a social misfit :^) PS. I had a VERY nasty fall earlier and planning to write another "I can't believe" post. (I wasn't hurt)

    2. Oh, Dug... not a nasty fall! I imagine you were outside and slipped?

    3. Rian, I fell out of my bathtub this morning, so hard I knocked my toilet off it's base and landed face up on the bathroom floor. But aside from a long scratch up one leg, I didn't break anything. It's a miracle.

    2. For sure! Your post is a good mix of events. I refrained from posting my list; would be too much of a downer right now.

  5. I'm afraid to watch the Starfleet Academy show; it would probably just make me mad. I loved the first season of Strange New Worlds but it's diminished in quality A LOT and I've mostly lost interest. Perhaps it's time to rewatch my DVDs of TNG or TOS. :) I was dumbfounded by Catherine O'Hara's death at such a young age; it was completely unexpected. When I saw the last photo of her in September though, she didn't look good at all, like she was wasting away. I watched a 32 inch TV for many years and was happy with it. Now I don't know how I managed without John's hand me down 65 inch one. LOL

    1. Thank you Margaret, I've been curious if you saw the new Trek show and what you thought--it has Holly Hunter, I love her, but the show is VERY juvenile, like it was made for gen z kids. Please let me know if you check it out--and yes you do have a very big tv now, haha. Every time I see a picture of it I debate buying one too :^) So sad about Catherine... :^(

  6. I have never been a Treckie. I watched the original series when it first ran on TV and that’s it for the Star Trek universe for me.

I heard about the Melania film. Geez, who would want to go and see a film by and about her? Not many, it seems.

Like you, I haven’t been in a movie theatre for yonks. I looked it up - it was 2012 and the film was “Django Unchained”.
Like you I sed to go about once a week, but that was the fifties and sixties.

I haven’t bought a new TV for 15 years or more (and yes, it’s a flat screen one). This one keeps on keeping on.

I’m not walking to my supermarket either. It’d be the height of idiocy to walk around in the blazing sun on 45 degree C days, even with a hat on.

I’m a dinosaur as well. I’ve only ever sent one text in my life. I keep my phone switched off; after all, someone might try to ring me.

I hadn’t heard of Catherine O’Hara until she died. Sorry Catherine.

    1. That should be "used to go" not "sed to go"

    2. First of all--wasn't "Django Unchained" a great movie? Thanks for sharing Peter and I realized why I like you so much when I read your phone thoughts, haha. I can so relate. :^) Well, the original Trek series was best (in my humble opinion) and frankly I'm surprised you never heard of Catherine O'Hara. She wasn't American, she was Canadian and was so sly and anti-establishment with her humor. Just loved her.

  7. I cannot believe that I am getting excited about temperatures getting all the way up into the 20s next week. Of course it is going to start snowing again. I can't believe that either.

Hope you really are okay after the fall. That sounds nasty.

    1. Thanks Miss Merry, I was just thinking about you. I hope you're continuing to improve. That fall in the tub earlier was pretty bad, I honestly did a somersault before flying out and knocking my toilet over. I can't believe I didn't break anything on my person.

  9. Gigi Hawaii. Hi Doug. I have been having trouble with my 43 inch Samsung tv, which I bought in March 2024. So, I ordered a 43 inch Roku tv, which will be installed on Tuesday. Now, David tells me I should reset my Samsung to factory setting and enter everything again. I don’t know how. Besides, what if it happens again? I think it has a virus.

    1. Gigi I'm sorry about your Samsung. This is the same reason why I had to buy a new tv a few months ago, my last one went bad after 3 years. These new tvs may be cheaper, but it seems half of them don't last very long. :(
