Snowy Days and Sundays never get me down (well, not since I retired anyway)

Here we are, Pittsburgh's biggest 1-2 day snowfall in 15 years.  We were dry as a bone (and 0 degrees Fahrenheit) when I went to bed Saturday night, but as of 4:49 PM today (Sunday) we've gotten 10.5 inches of the white stuff with a couple more inches headed our way tonight and another couple more Monday morning.

This morning after I got up and made my coffee, I was sitting here watching the local news when I heard a really loud engine outside--I figured someone in my neighborhood got a new snowblower.  I looked out my kitchen window (above) that looks up California Avenue and saw a snowmobile slowly buzzing it's way up the center of the avenue--with an Avalon Police SUV right on it's tail, lights flashing.  Neither one was going faster than 10-15 mph.

Funniest thing I ever saw--I ran back into the living room to grab my phone and take a picture, but they were out of sight when I returned.

Apparently it won't be melting anytime soon either.  Temps will remain in the teens for the whole week, with wind chills of 15 to 20 below zero tomorrow & Tuesday.  I've got nowhere else to be, and have more than enough in the cupboards (food, coffee, toilet paper, pills) to sustain me for the duration.  In fact, this past Friday when they announced Saturday would be dry but too frigid to be outdoors, I huffed it to the store again and bought even more.

So how are things in your neck of the woods?  (If you're reading this from Hawaii, don't bother!  And if a certain someone from Australia is seeing this, I know you're roasting!)

I wish I'd turned the television off after our local news--I saw the national headlines, and another killing by ICE agents in Minnesota.  I've seen various Trumpers online defending the recent slaughter, and I'm just sorry that Minnesota is under siege by Trump's minions.  I pray they don't make it to Pennsylvania, let alone Pittsburgh.

Well, I actually have about a dozen other things I'd like to share but I think I'll save them for another day.  Here's something a little strange... it's now 5pm and after this morning's snowmobile incident, I haven't seen a SINGLE plow, car, bus, vehicle of ANY type on our street.  And I live on the main drag.

I hope everyone out there is safe and warm, and as long as I'm blogging, here's my Sunday dinner.  I made real parsley mashed potatoes and my famous oven fried chicken.  I also baked a small pineapple butter cake, I wrote about it before on here.  You should make one, you won't be sorry. 😋

  1. Thankfully they oversold the storm predictions here. Not that I'm happy but instead of 16", we have about 7" so far, measured with a yardstick out the kitchen window.😀 Your report doesn't vary much from ours. We're all stocked up and just hoping the electric doesn't go out and tomorrow hubby will have to attack our very long driveway with the snowblower. Otherwise we're hunkered down for the duration, been told we will have below zero windchills for up to two weeks. Yuck!
Your dinner looks wonderful. We had a yummy JennIe O turkey breast in the crockpot with mashed potatoes and a bag of salad. Avoiding the news, watching football playoffs and doing a jigsaw puzzle (old people fun😂) Hope you are feeling well today. I'm happy to see you posting often even though you're still fighting that dang long covid!

    1. Bobi thanks very much--boy I'd love a Jennie O turkey breast right now! I hope you don't lose your power, and I hope your hubby is careful tomorrow. The long covid stuff, nice what you said here--it cycles in & out throughout the day. But I'm getting more of the good hours. :^)

  2. Evening, Dug. 12” so far here in NE Ohio south of Akron. Had a break for 30 mins, now starting up again. Still lotsa radar coming our way. It just keeps piling up. Thankfully no drifting winds. your meal look delicious! I put a turkey breast in the Crock Pot yesterday so I'm good for the frigid days ahead. I think I hope to live long enough to see sanity return and judgement heavy upon this administration and its brutal goons. Otherwise, stay warm, be safe and Keep coffee'd up! Hugs. Kris in Ohio

    1. Thanks very much Kris, you have a good way with words :^) Hey, you're the second one with a turkey breast in a crockpot. Sounds so good! I did see where you guys were really getting it in NE Ohio, I'm glad you're set for awhile. And I hope we both live long enough to see sanity return. Hugs to you as well. :^)

  3. Your dinner looks FABULOUS!!! Every single bite. I, of course, am eating heart healthy. Those potatoes . . . .
Meanwhile - we have about 10", getting more tonight. It is bitter cold and will get colder through at least Tuesday. Glad to be stuck at home and inside. Everything here is cancelled, schools, the courthouse, government offices, even McDonalds and the pizza place so you know it must be rough out there!
I am devastated, sad, angry, upset, horrified by the events across our country. So sad.

    1. Thank you Miss Merry, I've been wondering about you! I hope your heart and health is continuing to improve, you've been thru a pretty frightening month. I'm glad you're home and stuck inside too and you gave me a real chuckle here about McDonalds but so true. As for recent news events... please don't let things make you more sick. :^(

  4. Sad news for you, Doug. ICE is in Cranberry right now.
It is snowy here, I haven't measured, but it is a foot at this point. Snow does appear to be letting up. I am glad you are safe in your comfortable Pittsburgh hobbit hole. Have you seen Etruscan Smile? We enjoyed it. Tubi.

    1. Debby, for real? Cranberry? Omigod I need to tell some people.. thanks for letting me know. Well, I'm sure this snow is par for the course for a Penna Northerner like yourself, but it sure is a lot. And no I just looked up your movie and never saw it but it looks good, thank you for the heads up. :^)

  5. There’s a distinct lack of snow around these parts.
Here’s that certain someone in Australia and indeed you’re right. It’s 43C (about 110F) today and tomorrow. That’s really sodding hot. In the north west of the state it’ll reach 49C (120F), which is quite ridiculous. That’s the area where I was born and raised. I don’t remember it being that hot.

Like you I’ll be staying inside – I don’t want to fried to a crisp when I venture out.

I’m really glad I’m in Oz (in spite of the weather) as our government respects the law and doesn’t send armed thugs into our cities just because they don’t like the person in charge there. I’d better stop there.

    1. Thanks for sharing Peter and I honestly don't mind frigid temps here but I do envy you your government. Ours is pretty much in the crapper. :^(

  6. Hi Dug! Sounds like you're set for the duration... stay inside and stay warm. Your food looks great. I think you eat well ( I made the guys crescent sandwiches tonight - with bacon, 2 kinds of cheese, and deli meat). We're cold here for Texas (was 12 F this morning), snow on the ground, but only enough the make everything white. The crows and blue jays - as well as the ferals came round all day for food and treats...

    1. Hi Rian, thanks for sharing! I saw your cold temps on the news this morning, made me think of you. :^) And yes I do eat well, a little too well. Speaking of food, those crescent sandwiches sound pretty tasty. And I'm glad to read about your crows & ferals. I sure hope your eye is doing okay.

  7. Hi Doug, I was hoping you would do a post letting us know how you were doing and I wasn’t disappointed! Hilarious story about the snowmobile. As we were eating supper Saturday night I heard one whiz by on our street. Then on our walk first thing yesterday morning we noticed a neighbour around the corner had two snowmobiles sitting on his front lawn.We ended up with about 15 inches of snow. Luckily it is the light fluffy stuff but still no fun to shovel. We do have a company that clears our driveway and walkway but we do the deck and back patio ourselves. Your dinner looks delicious, perfect for a snowy, cold day. I saw in your forecast you are to stay cold. Stay safe and warm in your cozy home!❤️

    1. Good morning Robin! Thank you so much for your kind words, and I enjoyed reading about the snow (and snowmobiles) on your end as well. :^) I know you folks up North are accustomed to these big snowfalls, but I think Pittsburgh is still a little shell-shocked, haha. And yes, it's staying frigid all week. I'm having leftovers today and making chili tomorrow. I hope you & Chuck are enjoying all this! ❤️

  9. Ice and cold are the concerns here. We got a solid layer of ice on sidewalks and untreated streets; then a coating freezing rain, sleet, and finally snow. Thousands have lost power when power lines were snapped by falling tree limbs. Our biggest concern has been our water pipes…….they are not installed with 7 degree temperatures in mind! So far, so good though for us. A water main break two nights ago has flooded an intersection nearby and they are still working on the repair. I feel for the people having to be out working on that.
Your pineapple butter cake sounds like a winner; we will have to try it!
    Stay warm, stay safe!

    1. My gosh Mike, I'm so sorry to read all this. I really am, Texas has had more than their share of real tragedies from severe weather. I feel for the people out there too, including the 2 workers presently shoveling the walks in front of my apt building. (They should have snow blowers.) I sure hope you're well, and YES that cake is simple and awesome. Thanks for reading & sharing M.

  10. For the first time in weeks, we have sunshine this last Monday morning in January. I am thrilled, and hoping it remains all day so I can be outdoors, doing yard work, this afternoon. Your Sunday dinner looks delicious. We had chili verde burritos for dinner with a side of sliced red and yellow bell peppers. Dessert was sliced pears. The bakery/cafe had a meal with chili verde in it so I ordered a quart of just the meat mixture to make our own meals.

  11. I live in FL, so I won’t drone on about the weather. But, we will be down near freezing for the next few days. I grew up with snow, so I feel for everyone. ICE is now in Orlando, where my youngest daughter lives. They’ve booked a lot of hotel rooms, but I haven’t heard of anything going on yet. I feel sick to my stomach about what is going on. Joyce

    1. Thanks for sharing Joyce (I was wondering how you're doing). That is wild about Florida being near freezing for the next few days, this winter storm really was something. And I am so sorry about ICE in Orlando..I'm actually surprised they weren't there sooner. Just awful. :^(

  12. We never seem to be prepared for those crazy photos we want to capture! That's a LOT of snow and then cold temps too. It sounds like you're well set up for it though! It's been sunny and 20s-30s here. It's jumping up by 10 degrees or so and bringing rain with it. Hopefully snow to the mountains! Coffee and TP are musts for me. Your meal looks spectacular! I love beans and haven't had them for a while.

  13. Yum! I love the snow it’s nice to look at until you have to go out in it, tho

Spent yesterday shoveling my driveway! I loved it! Any reason to go play in the snow even if it is shoveling

    1. Beth, you'd better be careful! All that shoveling isn't good for the heart! But I do like your attitude, I went out last night just to walk and crunch the snow with my feet :^)

  14. I'm laughing at the story of the police and the snowmobile. I seem to recall a television show, maybe North of 60, that had a similar chase scene. I wonder how long the chase continued in your city? Who ran out of gas first?
It's a sad situation in Minnesota, though there may be some relief happening soon. I think the current administration is starting to understand how much people are disagreeing with ICE tactics.
Your dinner looks darn right delicious. Glad you've got sufficient supplies to last for awhile. Best to stay indoors and stay warm and dry.

    1. Thank you Maebeme, and I hope you're keeping warm--the more I learn of that recent ICE murder, the more it shocks me. I sure hope you're right. And thank you for the dinner compliment, I'm not a good cook but I'm a capable one. And you're right, warm & dry is the best. I went for a walk last night around my block and got my legs frozen wet up to the knees!
