I admit it, I've been avoiding "World News Tonight" as much as humanly possible for awhile now. I've got enough on my mind with this long covid condition, and to be very honest Donald Trump and his minions nearly gave me a nervous breakdown during his first reign of terror in 2017.
But something compelled me to watch the news tonight, so of course I saw Trump's gestapo I mean ICE agents shoot and kill that woman for getting in their way in Minneapolis, while the city's mayor Jacob Frey is telling them to get the fuck out of his city (good for him, for all the good it will do). And then there's that whole crazy-ass notion of Trump wanting to own Greenland. I think he saw that movie with the same name starring Gerard Butler (everyone flees to Greenland when Earth is attacked by comets). And Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House is assuring Americans not to worry, we're not moving in on Denmark's territory. Yes, Putin said that about Ukraine once too.
Wait, what's this? The United States of America has just taken two Venezuelan oil tankers. Full of oil, of course. China, are you watching?
So we should remember what goes around comes around, and if we're visited by any beings from Neptune's moon Triton who have been studying us and like what they see... I'm not crazy about the idea of having alien overlords but I'll take them over orange and MAGA ones any day of the week.
The sooner the better.

I'm so sad and angry and tired and disappointed and angry. The videos are devastating. What have we become?
ReplyDeleteWe only watch the BBC news on an app. I just want to check on how the rest of the world views what is going on in this country.
There is so much to keep track of, things are worse than they seem. The finance secretary or someone like that spoke at a Goldman Sachs convention in Florida today. He said that the "United States" is taking possession of all the oil in Venezuela. But they are not depositing the profits in the United States Treasury. The money will be deposited in "offshore accounts" controlled by djt. (per Heather Cox Richardson and NPR).
I think I'm going to start doing the same Miss Merry, watch the BBC News (if I watch any). I see it's available on Roku now too. Angry, tired, disappointed... yes, yes, yes.
DeleteThis is what I aw (The Hill) - “This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!” the president wrote. Kim in PA - but who knows??
DeleteThanks for sharing Kim--I look forward to seeing what the Venezuelans see of that oil sale--those poor people have been screwed over enough.
DeleteBBC news is the way to go, especially after the takeover of our news by the MAGA propaganda. I'm so sick at heart, Doug. I can't even express how sad, beaten down and fearful I feel.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up Margaret, I remember you mentioning the BBC before. I know how much Trumps second term has gotten to you and I am sorry but you are not alone. I'm very glad we're friends.
DeleteAmerica's good reputation has taken an awful bashing. We all feel your sadness, Doug. Power crazed, masked and armed ICE agents in unmarked cars. Short dark days of winter are depressing enough. Watching unchecked MAGA Mafia on the news is terrifying. My heart goes out to you and of course the majority of Americans who are horrified! 😢
ReplyDeleteThank you Florence, it's always good to hear from cooler heads like yourself. I'm just glad our Canadian friends aren't holding all Americans accountable for one monstrous party's actions.
DeleteI've said it before, but now I mean it more than ever: I'm glad I'm old and will soon be free of this horrible situation called Life. Maybe not soon enough, however. I am totally bummed. I ony feel like I can survive by having friends like you.
ReplyDeleteDJan, thank you for reading and for sharing. I know you're bummed and I totally get it, but you've always been one of the most appreciative people I know. Please stay hopeful.
DeleteWe are in the most awful mess here in the United States. Bay of Pigs was a scary time, but of short duration. I don't think Watergate was this awful, in comparison, and I thought that was a terrible thing for our country. The Vietnam War was also a horrific time in my own history. This, however, feels even worse. It is sheer madness. There is no rhyme or reason for any of this horror show.
ReplyDeletedkzody, I appreciate you sharing. So well said. I've thought of Nixon often these past 10 years, I'm old enough to remember Watergate pretty well. That was a puppet show compared to this. Vietnam was indeed horrorific, I had an uncle who was shot up badly (but survived). This is one madman's vision with lots of supporters. Just like Hitler.
DeleteYes, just like Hitler. We've all wondered how the world let such a thing happen, and yet, here we are, again, at the same crossroads, allowing a madman to make the world a hellscape. Congress and the courts are shameful in ignoring the atrocities being committed by this president.
DeleteThanks dkzody, well said. The irony for me is, back in 2016 when Hillary Clinton was running for president (and we all assumed it was a sure thing), all I could think was "we are long overdue for a woman president". Just when I thought we were finally joining other democracies in the 21st century, we went in the worst possible other direction. But to do it again? There's no excuse.
DeleteDug, there are no words... everyone else here has said it pretty much. I'm so embarrassed for my country. How can this be happening? How can we stop this (without bloodshed)? Our country's reputation is being destroyed. I can only hope that the world realizes that most (I hope most) of us don't want this. I don't watch the news (it makes me too anxious). But perhaps I will check out the BBC news...
ReplyDeleteThank you Rian, I was anxious to hear how you're doing & feeling. Everything you said, I couldn't agree more. I've made friends online with people outside of the US, and I hope we remain so. As for the news... yes you said it. Not to be callous but watching it daily isn't worth it.
DeleteI was a teen when Watergate went down; I'll admit I was pretty scared witnessing Nixon's behavior, I had never seen anything like it. Now, Watergate feels kind of quaint. What we're experiencing now is so horrendous, every day I wonder how we're ever going to escape this madness and be a normal country again. Even when we do, it's going to take years to undo all the wrongs this man and his disciples are committing.
ReplyDeleteBobi my friend, so well said thank you. I remember Watergate too, and it's awful how it pales to everything happening now. My god what will it take for half of this country to really see what's happening here? 😥
DeleteI have been watching the news, unfortunately, and I’m glad that I live on the other side of the world. It would be next to impossible for the vicious, stupid, vainglorious orange buffoon to invade Australia, but there’s a certain group of quislings (small, fortunately) who might support that.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, as this is a newsie column, it’s again going to 43 degrees here in Melbourne (see previous column’s comments for the translation). It’ll be even higher in some other parts of the state. The fire danger rating for the west and north of Victoria is “catastrophic” and for the rest it’s only “extreme”.
Thanks for sharing Peter, and you are pretty fortunate, living where you do. Actually, I thought that long before Trump--when your govt did that very civilized takedown of most guns. I'm sorry about the heat though, that does sound scary and I hope you're staying out of that, for the most part. Hey it's going to be 17.2 C (or 63F) here in Pittsburgh tomorrow--I'll be wearing short pants on my walk! In January! :^)
DeleteSo am I.
DeleteIt's downright frightening what is happening in the U.S. Diplomacy is definitely something of the past. I do wonder what he is being told by his minions because that his cognitive abilities are not up to the capability of coming up with some of these schemes.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder how long China will allow this to go on. Venezuela is a major oil producer and exporter to China. Apparently Russia is not happy either.
As for Denmark, I anticipate that the EU and their partners will come to their aid if he does attempt something in Greenland. That would likely include Canada, though our position just about our crazy neighbours could be quite precarious.
Or perhaps fate will intervene!
Thanks Maebeme, I really appreciated your take on things here--yes to China & Russia, yes. It breaks my heart that Denmark would reach out to the EU because of "us". I am very much hoping for fate to step in here--with a big side of karma.
DeleteEver watch Stargate? Lately I'm thinking being taken over by the ASHEN might be nice. They come, cure a pandemic (they cause), give us lotsa cool tech, extend lifespans (while secretly inhibiting procreation) and let us live free and comfortably until we're all gone and they take the planet for agricultural use. What's not to love? 🤣 Kris in Ohio
ReplyDeleteHaha--Kris that's a good summary of Stargate and at least they were subtle 😉 Thanks for sharing it. 👍
