Four Weddings and a Funeral, and a Hoover vacuum cleaner…sweeper

Way back in April 1994, my sister Shawn came up to spend the weekend, and we made plans to see Four Weddings and a Funeral at the Waterworks Cinema.  Shawn used to come up a lot of weekends then, before she met Jim and got married.  We’d go to the movies, she’d take me grocery shopping, I’d make us dinner.

My Hoover Preferred Vacuum Cleaner, minus it’s separate cleaning hose but still in fine working order

Anyway, I remember the events around this particular movie as I asked Shawn if we could go to the Appliance Store before or after the show, as I needed a new vacuum cleaner.

That was 30 years ago this month, and that’s what you’re looking at here, the sweeper I got and still use.

I have used it regularly in every apartment I’ve lived in since then, usually 1-2 times a week.  It’s never given me a bit of trouble.  I accidentally tore the separate cleaning hose back around 2005, but you can still buy the Hoover “A” bags that fit behind that plastic shell on the front.  The light at the bottom flickers off & on, but what can you expect after 30 years?

I was telling my friend Sarah in #411 my little story about the sweeper and this movie, and she said “I never heard of it.  I mostly watch romantic comedies.”

So do you own any old appliances you still use, that you’re surprised still work?  This past January I boasted on here about my Rival hand mixer that my Grandma was going to toss in 1984 because it rattled so loudly.  I took it off her hands and used it until this past February, when I made a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies and discovered my dough had sharp white plastic fragments in the cookie dough.

Out went the dough—and my grandma’s 50 year old hand mixer.

Anyway, the reason I’m sharing my sweeper here is because last night I watched a (very funny, very peculiar) documentary series on MAX called “HOW TO with John Wilson” where every episode starts out on one topic but winds up completely different by the end.  In last night’s show “How to Watch Sports”, he shows us how to clean your apartment before you invite your friends over for the big game.

But his vacuum was broken, so he takes it to an appliance repair shop in Brooklyn.

The owner of the shop moans it’s a Dyson, and John asks if that’s a problem.  The shop owner (these are real people) says “Hell yeah it’s a problem!  Dyson cleaners are crap, they’re the most overrated things out there!”   He tells John he should get a Shark or a Bissell or a vintage Hoover, and the next thing you know John is at the annual Vacuum Land Convention in Scranton, Pa.

There are people there from all over the country who collect vintage vacuum cleaners.  One man confesses he’s been in love with them since he was a kid, and his dad gifted him with a rainbow of Hoover uprights over the years.  What the—!!

Here’s one more thing.  I never throw out a manual until I toss the appliance first, so here’s my Hoover manual.

I wonder if I can still mail in the registration card?  It says to send in by Dec 31 1994 if I want a chance at winning a carpet shampooer.  I guess that ship has sailed.

And here’s the spare agitator belt that came with the vacuum.  I’ve never needed to replace my Hoover’s belt, I’m still using the original.

  1. What a coincidence. Just this week I found a shop that sold bags for my Electrolux vacuum cleaner.
This might not sound like a big deal, but I inherited it from my mum, who died in 1980.
It wasn’t new then, so it’s been around the block a few times. Well, around the house.
You know I have to say it: They don’t make them like they used to.

  2. Hoover--great old name. And just down in Canton, Ohio, once. I spent the majority of my accounting career working for a subsidiary of a division of Maytag, who, in the end, owned Hoover, before Maytag was purchased by Whirlpool. Hoover turned out to be the demise of Maytag, in my opinion. It was a long story, but I wrote it up in my blog. I'm not surprised your Hoover is still alive and cleaning. I began my married life with a cannister Hoover from the '20's; passed down from my great grandmother. It lasted another twenty years, and truth be told, I may have replaced it with another Hoover in a fit of pique.

    1. Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for sharing Joanne, enjoyed the backstory. Would've liked to see that 20's cannister too. Well, I was surprised to see Hoover still has a couple models on the market. I may just buy another.

  3. We always had Hoovers growing up. I too inherited one of my mom's old hoovers and used it until one of our kids took it off to college. Now we don't have carpet anymore (except on the stairs) and we use an Oreck for that. But funny thing about Hoovers, we 'hoovered' not vacuumed - thought that was what you called it when I was young. Things certainly lasted longer in the 'old days'.

  4. My vacuum is at least that old but is an Eureka. I'm hoping I can still get those paper bags for it since it still runs great! (and does an excellent job)

  5. I am still using my 27 years old washing machine, after five house moves it still works perfectly though the cabinet looks a little beat up. I have a hand mixer too which is almost the same age, but I don't use it often, it's quicker to beat things up with a wooden spoon than to find the mixer, attach the whisks, then disassemble and put it all away again. My Vacuum, a Miele, is about 13 but I rarely use it as it scares the daylights out of the cat.

    1. Haha--River, you made me laugh I totally forgot how our cat used to "ske-daddle" when the vacuum was turned on. I feel bad now for scaring her! Anyway, you seem like the type to take care of things for a long time.

  6. I have a chest freezer that belonged to my grandmother, it's 36 years old, survived three moves, and still works. I have gone modern on vacuuming, I have a robot vacuum.

  7. My parents had a refrigerator they bought when they first married. They replaced it when I was overseas in the military. That amazes me to this day. Tim and I have been married 26 years, and we have replaced our refrigerator 3 times. Don't even get me started on the number of washers we've replaced. A pet peeve.

  9. I'm going to cry. I literally threw out a 3 pack of Hoover bags a week ago. We haven't had that sweeper in years but I had an unopened pack of bags leftover. Never occurred to me that you may still have one. Lucky for me, I have a Shark!

    1. Oh darn! Well, they're not expensive and I have a dozen, enough to last me a couple years. And yep I know you love your Shark--that may be my next one :^)

  10. My Hoover canister vacuum is nearly 40 years old and they still make bags that fit into it. I just got an order of them from Amazon. It looks a little tired but it still works great. My grandson comes over and vacuums for me since I'm kind of wobby these days. When I had a house and cats one of them was scared of it and the other one hopped on top and went for a ride while I cleaned. I still have the manual too, hahaha. Hope your neighbor discovers "Four Weddings and a Funeral," I still have a DVD of it.

  12. I love the vacuum cleaner story...we too keep our appliances (and cars, and clothes, and spouse) until it completely wears out and can no longer be fixed. So far, so good on the spouse.

But, we did have a hiccup with our vacuum cleaner this past year because the usual appliance repair shop did "wear out" and closed so Terry had to find another one. It was not a good one. They kept the Dyson for a month and didn't call or respond to our calls. I wrote a blistering Yelp review after we got the vacuum cleaner back (and it did work well) due to their poor business practices. Today, months after I posted that review, I got an email from the owner apologizing for their poor customer service.

Like you, my husband keeps every manual and receipt for every appliance we purchase.

  13. Hi Doug, aren’t Hoovers the best vacuums? When Chuck and I married in 1984 I inherited my Grandmothers. It was probably 10 years old then. I used it for a dozen years or so. Then we bought our first house which came with central vac. Our next three houses also had central vac. In 2016 when we purchased this house we had to also purchase a vacuum. We got a Hoover! A bunch of my small kitchen appliances are 20 + years old but fridge, stove and dishwasher are from 2019. I have had a number of appliance repair people tell me appliances are NOT made as well now and not to expect to get as many years out of them now as we use to.
    Take care!❤️

    1. Wow, this was an interesting read thank you for sharing Robin. I've heard of those central vacs, what a cool concept. But I suppose with everyone going hardwood these days... Anyway, I'm glad we're both members of the Hoover Club! 🥳 Well, I'll be doing another Appliance blog real soon..

  14. This is a great post Doug ! Like others have said , electrical items we bought when we first lived together ( in 1987 ) kept going for years - our beautiful Smeg fridge celebrated its 21st birthday before it became too exhausted to continue - that was in 2020 and I have had to replace the fridge twice since then

    And I don’t vacuum - I hoover !
Sending positive thoughts that you are feeling better

  15. Good heavens, Doug, you've certainly had good luck (or taken good care) of your small appliances. I do have a hand held mixer that I bought shortly after I left home in 1977 that I still use. My daughter bought me a new one a few years ago and it languished at the back of cupboard until I moved here with her. I gifted her the new one and kept the old one at my son's house. While it is over 45 years old (how the heck did that happen), I didn't use the old mixer more than a dozen times are year so it ought to continue working for many years more. Your Hoover on the other has had regular and sustained useage. Well done!
I've never seen the movie, but based on the title I suspect it was a rom com. :)

    1. Thank you Maebeme, I think my sweeper was a combination of luck and care--but wow, a 1977 mixer! I didn't use my grandmas mixer more than 4-5 times a year, but I knew it was in poor shape since the day I took it. I did just get a new one back in January, but have yet to use it. As for that movie, it's been so long since I've seen it I'm planning on seeing it again as soon as I can. :^)

  16. I was listening to my Sony Walkman for years after everyone else had switched to an IPod, and writing on a word processor while the rest of the world moved on to personal computers. I have to be dragged into adopting new technology every time. Vacuum? I let the maids bring that once a month. :)

  17. Hoover is a great name for quality. I've not owned a Hoover but that might be my next purchase given all the good press here. I currently have two Shark vacuums, one for each floor of the house and they are about 4 years old. No problem so far. Previously, on my neighbor's recommendation, I bought a Miele because he said it dealt with dog and cat hair extremely well. Before the Miele, I had Dyson. The Miele and Dyson were constantly at the repair shop due to dog hair getting in to the electronics. The Shark is holding up well and has required no repairs. Has anybody bought a new Hoover? Are they as good as the older models?

    1. Thanks Susan. And I hope someone answers your question about Hoovers today, I'd love to know too. Well, my sister has a Shark and loves it, and I thought Dyson was a good name but the owner of that Brooklyn shop sure didn't think so.

    2. My sister gave me her Dyson when she moved to an apartment. I hate that thing. It is unbelievably heavy, hard to use, and I cannot see any difference between its cleaning ability vs my old Shark, which I love. I had my Mom's old Hoover canister, which stopped working and I put it on the curb. I wish I had tried harder to repair it. Lesson learned.

  18. I love going to the movies. Love going to waterworks to see movies.there was a dollar movie theater near ccac south. Good for when I was feeling sad or stressed and needed a pick me up. I had a cordless shark vacuum cleaner to pick up dog hair from my sweet pickles. We had her 2010-2022..best dog ever. I have since retired my cordless. Did it’s due diligence picking up pickles hair. We had a Hoover when I was little kid in the 70s. Bought it from a door to door salesman! That was a fun day.
