Friday morning I awoke early and made a cup of coffee, then got right to work installing that new toilet seat I bought on Thursday, so I could do a quick photo-blog about it.
In hindsight (no pun intended) I'd like to offer an apology for posting a blog yesterday about my new toilet seat. I have better things to write about and ruminate on. It's just been something I've been after myself to do for a couple years, and was glad I finally got around to getting it done. But I didn't need to write a blog about it for crying out loud, who wants to see my throne anyway? So... I'm sorry.
It wasn't too soon after posting it, I was sitting in front of my tv and eating my breakfast and watching a show about the Amish, my left temple & eyeball began to build with pressure and pain. Left me with no choice but to head into the bedroom, shut the door and lie down until noon. I cannot shake the symptoms of this long covid. It flares up every day, sometimes in the eyes, sometimes in the sinuses and mouth, and when it does it makes it difficult to eat or drink anything besides warm coffee.
I should be sorry for sharing all that too, but truthfully I'm not. I only share this stuff on my blog or with one person, my friend Diana. It's not as awful as it was 2 years ago, but it has still put a halt to normal, everyday living.
After the head stuff died down somewhat, I put on my shoes and combed my hair and made a beeline for the door. We're supposed to get a couple inches of the white stuff Sunday night, but on Friday it was 60F outside with big 50 mph winds and I wanted to be a part of it. I headed up the street to the church for the start of this seasons Fish Fry, but it was only 2pm and they didn't open their doors until 4, so I got this slab of fish at the deli instead. Doesn't it look good? It was sizzling in the container on my walk home.
Finally, I wanted to share this:
Why does this make me sad? This is a recent photo of Lucie Arnaz hugging her brother Desi Arnaz Jr. The caption said it was a "rare" public appearance by Desi.
Lucie was born in June 1951, making her 74 years old. Desi was born in January 1953, making him 73. I don't know what Desi's been up to, but he looks like a hermit.
I think this struck a nerve with me because just recently, a couple weeks ago, I began watching Here's Lucy on the Roku Channel. Do you remember this show? It aired Monday nights at 9pm on CBS, from 1968 to 1974.
It starred a wailing fiftysomething Lucy, a bellowing sixtysomething Gale Gordon, and Lucy's smirking, eye rolling kids Desi & Lucie as Craig & Kim Carter. Sometimes the kids came across a bit square--"My brother owns all your records, Mr. Wayne Newton!" but they usually played their rebellious teen parts well.
When I was a kid, I was fascinated with this pair--I knew they were real-life siblings and thought they were groovy. I watched the show (when I could) just to see them. Sometimes it would just be Mom & myself still up, and she'd say "Honey, isn't there anything else on tv? That broad (Lucy) gives me a headache." But sometimes we'd talk about Lucy's kids, and wonder about their famous lives.
I don't know where I'm going here... it just makes me sad to see Desi looking so alone, and so old. I'm getting my first social security check this week and that's nice. But I'm getting old too, and that's not so great. At the risk of sounding mean, I don't want to look as old as Desi here in a few years time. I am definitely never growing a beard.

Dug, you shouldn't feel guilty about sharing... sometimes your symptoms or experiences help someone else. I know that your words, "it has still put a halt to normal, everyday living" struck a cord . This eye ordeal has done the same with me. You tend to put off things that need doing hoping this issue will go away. But after a while, you realize that you need to get on with normal living as best you can. What is, is... and we have to learn to live with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd we watched the original "I Love Lucy" for years. It was my daughter's favorite show... even the re-runs. But I think "Here's Lucy" is different, right? We never watched that. (if it aired 1968-1974 - I had 3 babies by then so was a bit busy - ha!)
And hurray! for your first social security check!!
Thanks so much Rian, you always say helpful, nice things. And yes you're exactly right--after dealing with something (medical) long enough, you have to try to adjust and get on with things. And yes, I think we all loved "I Love Lucy" for Lucy, but this was her third show... I really watched it just to see her cool real life kids. And yes, I'm sure you were too busy or too tuckered out! :^)
DeleteDesi Jr is MY age. And that picture you posted is the reason most old men should NOT let their beard and hair grow long. Terry, at 77, just went to his hairdresser to get his hair cut as it had become a bit scruffy in the back. Because his hair has thinned quite a bit as he has aged, he keeps it short so it doesn't make him look like a scruffy old man. If one's hair is gray, then one's beard is also. Not a good look on most men.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Dkzody, and I so agree. I have thinning, gray hair and need to keep it very short so I don't look hermit-like.
DeleteA nicely trimmed beard is attractive, but Desi's isn't. To be honest, I didn't realize he was still alive. My parents couldn't stand Lucille Ball (her voice) but I enjoyed her show for its silliness. I'm not sure I watched the newer version of it though. I'm so sorry about the continuing LC; it sounds like you're dealing with it the best you can. More snow?? Ugh. My Older Daughter will be trying to fly out of Montreal today; I hope she makes it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret, I had a beard in college but never again. They're not that comfortable. And I'm looking forward to hearing how things went for OD in Montreal. I hope you're okay.
DeleteHi Doug, I missed yesterday’s post about the toilet seat! Good for you! Your fish dinner looks delicious. Hope you enjoyed it. I have the whole series of “I Love Lucy” on DVD but I didn’t care for “Here’s Lucy”. Nice to see Luci and Desi together. Wow, you have had a snowy winter. As I type this we are getting snow too. This has been a long winter! Take care Doug.❤️
ReplyDeleteHi Robin! I hope you know how much I enjoy your feedback here, thank you my lovely friend. That fish was really good, but nothing beats the Assumption Catholics fish, I will try again. Robin I love the original Lucy, this one not so much. Only watching it for her fun kids. So you're getting snow too! I'm feeling like a real Canadian this winter. Take care kiddo. 🙂❤️
DeleteI have no problem with you writing about a new toilet seat. Not every column has to be world shattering (or even Doug shattering – sorry).
ReplyDeleteThat fish looks like flathead to me – that’s one of my favorite fish (along with half a dozen others).
I didn’t bother watching “Here’s Lucy”. Of course, as a kid, I watched “I Love Lucy”. It was okay-ish.
Boy, Lucie scrubs up pretty fine for 74.
I hope that Wayne Newton line was scripted, not what they really thought.
Desi, of course, was part of the group Dino, Desi and Billy. Dino was Dean Martin’s son and Billy was Billy Hinsche. I’m using the past tense as Desi is the only one still with us.
Some of us keep our beards trim (unlike our hair).
Thanks Peter, another thing I envy about you Aussies--you like your fish and it's plentiful. Up here it's more a seasonal thing. I do remember Desi being part of that 60's "boy band", I'll have to look for some youtube clips. And I'm glad you keep yourself trimmed. There's hope for you yet. :^)
DeleteI’m glad you got out and hope you enjoyed the fish. Our weather is going to be crazy too next week here in FL. It’s 84 today, then going down to the 30’s Tuesday and Wednesday night, then almost up to 80 from Thursday on. So I have a little toilet story. 😊 We put in a new one when we bought the house and I never noticed how low it was until my knees starting hurting and it got harder to get up. My husband and I are short, but my son is 6’1” and I realized he must have felt like he was in an elementary school when he visited for a month at a time. I also had liked the framed bathroom mirrors and he confessed that it was so low he couldn’t see his face, lol. So I had both replaced and everyone is happy! Joyce
ReplyDeleteThanks Joyce! That fish was really good, but I ate it all in one sitting and it could've easily made 2 meals. And that is crazy what's coming your way weather wise--what a winter this has been! Haha your toilet story was funny, and your poor son! Glad to hear you guy those toilets adjusted. :^)
DeleteIf ever you make your way north Doug, Lucille Ball lived with her grandparents just outside Sugar Grove. Also, the Lucille Ball Comedy Museum is close, in Jamestown NY. We will take you to Celeron and show you the Lucy statue and tell you about scary Lucy.
ReplyDeleteGosh Debby, that would be really cool--someday!
DeleteI liked your toilet seat story. I ordered one from Home Depot a few years ago (needed a gray one) and someone with my exact name picked it up by mistake. So weird! Sorry to hear about your wooziness but happy you got your fish. Thanks for sharing that pic of Desi. He looks awful and he was so cute when he was in Dino, Desi & Billy!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bobi! Too weird about someone getting your special order toilet seat, haha. That fish was pretty tasty (but my eyes were too big for my stomach) and I still can't get over how different Desi looks today. He just looks so sad. :^(
DeleteYour fish looks so delicious! We do not have any local fish frys anymore and it makes me sad. And I don't want to drive out of town and come home with cold fish. And I don't want to make it myself. I think I am having a pity party, lol!!
ReplyDeleteThat darn LC. Grr.
I hate to see people my age who I haven't seen for decades. It reminds me how old I am, too. Desi doesn't look lonely to me, he looks like a person enjoying a private life.
Thanks very much Miss Merry, but I gotta tell you--I'd happily trade that fried fish for your visit to the Amish Baked Goods table :^) I appreciate your grrs towards the LC (sure wish that would go away) and you know what? From what I read, you're spot on in regards to Desi. I think he's just enjoying his now-private life. I'm glad for him but still... he's nothing at all like I remember.
DeleteMaybe you should look up Desi Arnaz Jr. He is doing good work in Nevada. Both his wife and granddaughter died from cancer.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon, I did know his wife died in 2015. I didn't know that about his granddaughter. I hope he's at peace, and happy.
DeleteI've missed a post apparently, but I'll have to go back and read about your toilet seat story. It's funny, I've probably replaced a half dozen in my lifetime. Remember the cushioned seats? They didn't last long, somehow they got split or torn and weren't comfortable for long.
ReplyDeleteThe fish looks delicious! I haven't had fish (other than canned tuna) for awhile. I know there is a place here in Yuma that serves fish and chips on Friday evenings; I may have to look for it.
As others have said, go ahead and be open about your symptoms and experiences. Not only is it helpful for others, I feel it is important to share for your own sake...bottling it up isn't a good thing! Besides, this is your space and your choice about what you share. Take care!
Thanks very much Maebeme! I always enjoy your feedback. Yes I remember those padded seats well (I wrote about them) I used to SELL them in the 1980s and people were always trying to return them. :^) I appreciate what you wrote here about the stuff I share, thanks again.
DeleteDesi Jr. doesn't live too far from me - I've seen him around Boulder City a couple of times over the years, but he didn't have that beard. "Here's Lucy" is hit-and-miss but it had some wonderful guest stars over the years - Ginger Rogers, Patti Andrews, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor - and I always thought Lucie was delightful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing David--that's right, you & Desi are practially neighbors :^) Well, I am currently watching Season 1 and you're right--a so-so episode with Eva Gabor and a really good one with Wayne Newton.
