I had 3 chairs in the running—a boxy armchair, a cheap faux leather thing and this one. But I knew I wanted something modern, minimalist, industrial in design.
I worried about getting something with white fabric, but it’s not a bright white, more of a cream with a dull glow. It’s a heavy canvas fabric and quite nice.
(I placed a tan pillowcase over the headrest portion to keep the top of the chair from attracting a lot of dust. I also bought this 14x22 red & cream lumbar pillow for some color.)
The chair’s iron sides and back are surprisingly substantial, heavy. This is not cheap. You can use the skinny armrests to sit yourself down or get up, they won’t wobble or move.
You can’t tell with my lousy few photos, but the chair sits very low to the ground. It works though, because the cushion is so high.
Also the seat is 30” wide. That’s like a chair-and-a-half. An adult could sit in it side-by-side with a child.
Here’s something interesting, which you probably can’t tell from these comparison photos but is very obvious in person. The chair’s pillows are 2 squares sewn together. But one of the squares is 2-3 inches longer than the other.
You can either have a longer seat cushion (left) when you sit, or a taller back cushion (right).
I don’t know which way is the right way, or even if there is one. I like both.
Hoping I find another pillow for the chair, though. It looks a little too plain without something with a pattern, and when I put the red & cream one on my bed, I liked it on there even better.
I wish I was married, most men don’t like or aren’t good at this stuff!
Good morning Doug, your new chair is gorgeous!! It looks wonderful in your apartment. You have such good taste. Have you sat in it much??
ReplyDeleteI do like the red pillow on your bed too. It is a nice pop of colour. I really like your decorating style. Very clean and simple with not a lot of do-dads. I find I prefer that style more and more.
Have a great weekend Doug.❤️
Robin
Robin, you just made me blush a little bit, you're so nice! Thank you very much, Peachy Pal you're too kind. And yes I have sat in it a good bit--it feels like you've smashed the pillows down, but when you get up--it looks untouched. Weird, but nice! :^) Thanks again and I hope you & Chuck are both well!
DeleteWe are good Doug. I dragged Chuck out of bed at 5:30 so we could watch the sunrise in one of our local parks. It was lovely.
DeleteTake care!❤️
Robin
Robin I don't know if you'll see this, but this was both funny & sweet. The more I know Chuck, the more I like him. :^) By the way, for the first time in 6 months I forgot to weigh myself yesterday so I think I'm going to do it every 2 weeks instead. :^)
DeleteHi Doug, I always check back to read the various comments, they are always interesting! I think you and Chuck would get along great.
DeleteTake care.❤️
Looks good, looks comfy, and it goes with your bed. Good choice!
ReplyDeleteTom I take it you're talking about the pillow, not the chair? The pillows on the chair, I was just showing how it looked on the bed. But thank you!
DeleteI think he means the black chair frame goes well with the black bed frame, both metal, both black. I thought the same thing.
DeleteThanks River... well, the bedframe is actually a lighter gray and in another room, but no biggie 🙂
DeleteGlad to know you decided on and are happy with your new chair, Doug. It does look perfect in that space. And your deliberation time saved you good bucks! Curious about those white items under the chair. Are they rug protectors? Yes, I'm a nosey Parker!
ReplyDeleteFlorence, you're not nosey, you have an eagle eye! Those were ice cubes I placed in the former indentations in the carpet from the old chair. I shouldve waited until they were melted to take the picture. But thank you for your kind remarks! 🙂
Deletesize is difficult to see - how about a picture of you in the chair??
ReplyDeleteI would, but I have no one here to take the picture! If you measure from the back cushion to the floor, the chair is about 34 in high. And it's 30 in wide and 30 in deep. 🙂
DeleteThat's a lovely and comfortable looking chair. I'm so glad that you found something to suit you. I know how frustrated you were! If it's any consolation, I struggle with the same issues of finding complementary throw pillows--or anything else in the decorative vein.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Margaret, much appreciated. It honestly looks nicer in person, I just need to get my brain used to it as I formally had a brown leather chair that sat there 5 years. I don't want to sound sexist, but I still think women are better about this kind of stuff than men.
DeleteYou're becoming quite the decorator! Your choices work well. I see your ice cubes under the chair; I do that too! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHaha thank you Bobi--I'm actually considering hiring a decorator, I need help with artwork and curtains and stuff. Haha, glad you saw my ice cubes!
DeleteWell, it's a fine chair and I am glad it turned out so well. I never heard of the ice cube trick before. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you DJan, it's nothing fancy for sure--just a clean, simple guest chair. My favorite place to sit is the floor. :^) And yes, that ice cube trick really works!
DeleteI'd say you're doing just fine on your own. The chair is really nice and I do like the pillow with the horizontal stripes best. It pulls the eye side to side. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteMaebeme, I needed to read this. Thanks very much. :^)
DeleteYou've done impressively well with all of those pillow additions. I thought the "tobacco" print just looked like a modern Native American Indian print, until you said something about tobacco. So don't compare it to tobacco anymore. Your bed pillow goes well with the nightstand. You did better than most women, so you don't need a wife. (At least for decorating.) Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I saw this before I went to bed, thank you Linda you're always honest, sweet and funny. 🙂👍❤️
DeleteThat is a very fun, modern, stylish, minimalist chair. The cushions look very comfortable. I'm so happy for you that you finally found something that is perfect for you and your apartment.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kay! Well I dont know if it's perfect--I probably should've gone with one of those recliners you & Art own. But it's weird like me, so... :^)
Delete30 inches? That's half a couch! My armchair/recliner seats are only 18 inches and that seems like plenty of room. I'm glad you chose the chair you liked best.
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks River and I'm glad someone noted that 30" width! It's wide, alright! But I had plenty of 'wide-room' where it was going, so I went for it :^)
DeleteI really like it and the cushion you chose. You could always spray the chair with scotch guard first which protects it from stains. I think the style is very modern and the industrial look is in. I hope you and your butt enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks Joey--my butt's in it right now as I'm typing this. I know that you're into style and such, so I appreciate your feedback. And I believe the cushions are already scotchguarded, the company has a video showing where wine and such pour on it without sticking. I'm pretty sloppy so that's a good thing :)
DeleteIt looks very nice. Since I have short legs, I probably would opt for a short seat and high back so I could lean back and rest my neck.
ReplyDeleteI agree, that would work best for you. If you ever come to Pittsburgh and surprise me with a visit, I'll flip that cushion first thing :^)
DeleteBeautiful chair and am very glad you're happy with your choice. And a discount at that. I thoroughly enjoy your blog; you're a good writer and an interesting person. Thanks for sharing. Kim in PA
ReplyDeleteKim, you just made my night. This was so kind of you, thanks so much.
DeleteThe chair looks comfortable, but the arm rests, strong as they are as you said, don’t seem to be the type to lean one’s elbows on – or just rest your arms.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the chair the hospital lent me for several months when I broke my neck. It was really comfortable. I was loath to give it back.
Thanks for your feedback Peter. Listen, I don't suffer in silence; if these skinny arm rests on the chair were a pain, I'd be howling! But somehow, they just work. I'm still getting used to the thing though. 🙂
DeleteI am a leaner and a foot tucker. I couldn't lean on the arm of the chair. It would not work for me. You evidently have better posture than I do. That being said, I do like the looks of that chair and it seems to go quite nicely with the rest of your furniture.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debby. You'll get no argument from me, this is not a chair to get cozy in! I just wanted something bright and modern and different, try to jazz up my apartment a little bit. I had a dark brown leather one that sat there for 5 years, I was ready for something new. 🙂
DeleteHi Dug, I'm late commenting, sorry - been a busy week with daughter coming in this weekend. I like the looks of your new chair. And I don't think white should be a problem since there are no kids or pets around. And I like the wide-ness as it makes it easier to curl up with your legs (which I do a lot). As far as looks go, it looks great. But I will admit it doesn't look that comfortable to me. However, if it works for you, that's all that matters. And I think the high cushion is for your back... but again, whatever works.
ReplyDeleteRian, please don't apologize. I just got to get your comments I always enjoy them so much. I think you have the new chair nailed down, it is a definite learning process to get comfortable in it. At the same time I love the wideness! It makes a big difference. I just wanted something modern and artful, but it had to be 10% practical too. 😉
