This morning I awoke to no water—I need to brush my teeth, I need coffee! After checking my phone for alerts from our landlord, headed downstairs to see if a notice was in the lobby. While waiting for the elevator, up walks my neighbor Darla. I said Happy Holidays, she said the same. I asked where our water was, she said she didn’t know. I said “So where’s our friend Charlie? I haven’t seen him downstairs for two weeks now.”
(Charlie is the name we gave our 60ish neighbor who talks to no one; he wears khaki shorts and a matching baseball cap, takes a pack of cigarettes downstairs every morning, stands outside our apt building and smokes for 2-3 hours.)
Darla said “Where have you been? They booted him out after Thanksgiving.”
I said “What?? Why?” Darla shrugged her shoulders. I said “I know he wasn’t the friendliest of people. If you said hi he’d look down and make growling sounds in his throat. If you tried getting on the elevator and he was on there first, he’d shake his head no and block your way until the doors shut.”
Darla said “Yeah we all have our quirks.” I said “He did talk to Pearl that one time. He asked her for the phone number of the girl she’s always with, and when Pearl said ‘That GIRL is half your age and my DAUGHTER’ he said ‘Does she have a boyfriend?’”
Darla laughed and said “Yeah, other than Pearl he mostly kept to himself.” I said “That’s right. When he had an issue with the couple who lived above him, he never confronted them. He just banged on his ceiling every night with a broomstick, and complained to Steiner the people upstairs were committing lewd sex acts.”
Darla shrugged her shoulders again and said “Well, I guess we’ll never know.” Right then, Janet comes out of her apartment and her eyes lit up. She said “I thought I heard voices out here! I’ve been worried about you, Mister!” I asked “Who? Me?” She said “I haven’t seen you in ages! I was about to call Steiner to ask about the water and why the tenant in 401 never comes out of his apartment!”
I said “I don’t live in 401. I live in 402. Dee lives in 401.” Janet said “She never comes out either!” I said “I’ve been sick and Dee is a hermit. Please don’t ask Steiner to check on us.” Janet said “I’m the mama here and worrying is what I do!”
Janet is a stout black woman who lives in a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 problem foster children. Just the other day on my way back from the laundry room, her oldest, an 11 year old boy, was lying on his stomach on the floor between our apartments. His arms were outstretched and he was sweeping them up & down, like he was making a snow angel, face down. In the carpet.
When I asked him if he was okay, he stopped what he was doing and said “Yes”. He then went back to making his carpet angel as I walked away.
Janet if you’re going to worry about anyone, I think your neighbors should be the least of your concerns. Still no water, but I just remembered I have a full Brita water pitcher in the fridge. As for Apt #414, with the new ogre sign on it’s door, a hip young couple lives there and you couldn’t meet a nicer pair.
Sorry about your water, hope it comes back soon. Water problems are the worst and we've had our share so I can truly sympathize. Love all your neighbor observations! This is some of what I miss when you're not blogging. Good stuff! We live in a rural area and have to work harder to spot the weird. ;-)
ReplyDeleteBobi, I'm very glad to hear from you did you have a nice Christmas? I wanted to thank you for the fun Christmas card with the iron on decals inside--they made me laugh and I was tempted to iron a couple of them on my jeans! You're very sweet, thanks again :^)
DeleteOh, Christmas was fine, quiet as always. I'm glad the patches gave you a laugh. They reminded me of the Brady Bunch. I had used a bunch for a retro jacket I designed and donated to a charity auction. Believe it or not, I was told a college student loved and bought it. I never thought it would appeal to that age group, guess everything old is new again.
DeleteMy gosh, that is awesome. 🙂
DeleteHi Dug! Sorry about your water, but at least you have that Brita water pitcher in your frig... you can make coffee! Your neighbors all sound 'interesting'. We don't know much about our neighbors... the ones we were close to on either side of us for 30 plus years have moved to be closer to their kids. The others are nice and we exchange holiday goodies, say hello when walking or outside, and text when needed... but not close. I'll be posting soon... and it may be a long one to catch up. Hope you had a Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rian, and your neighbors sounded very nice, normal. We don't get a lot of those here! Anyway, I'm very glad to hear from you, been wondering how you are. I look forward to your next post. :^)
DeleteNo water for the Christmas holiday???!!! That is just terrible. Hope it was a short-lived problem. No-water is much worse than my no-dryer issue. You, much like Shirley over at Boots and Braids, have some interesting characters in your building.
ReplyDeleteThanks dkzody--well, we had water on Christmas... today, it's 1:24pm and still waiting but they're working on it. I appreciate your comment here about my neighbors, I don't know why I felt the need to share all that. :^)
DeleteMost of our town woke up to no electric on Christmas morning. We have an army of squirrels around town that keep making suicide missions into the transformers. Everyone was reconnected by 11am. Lots of grumbling, but it will make a fun Christmas memory next year. I hope they got your water situation fixed quickly. It is no fun when things happen on a holiday. The fix always takes longer.
ReplyDeleteMiss Merry, sure am glad you got your power back early, ralk about awful timing! We finally got our water back around 2, I have a whole new appreciation for showers. :^) I hope your Christmas was a nice one.
DeleteWhat fun neighbors are, although what would I know?
ReplyDeleteOn my floor there’s only me. On the floor below there’s Hazel, and she’s really nice.
That’s all there is in my part of the apartment block.
Peter, I do envy you. Well, my next door neighbor Dee is quiet for the most part, so I know I'm a lucky man compared to many other tenants here. Hope you had a nice Christmas my friend.
DeleteIt seems your neighbours are quite interesting. Apparently, they do keep an eye out on/for one another.
ReplyDeleteHope the water is back on!
Maebeme only the busy bodies. 🙂 The water's back on and I hope you’re enjoying the holidays.
DeleteHaving no water would be EXTREMELY inconvenient! I have no Brita pitcher although I should have one. I love your convos with the neighbors; for some reason they always remind of a comedy sit-com. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret, when a convo turns funny I just think "blog this while it's still fresh." Maybe you don't need a Brita water pitcher, Pittsburgh water is just very mineraly. 🙂
DeleteNo water is the worst. Happened to me once or twice. As for quirky neighbors, I live in an old folks' home now, and it is never ending. Love it.
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks Joanne, you have the right attitude. ❤️
DeleteWe had water AND electricity for the whole time, but it's always a possibility that we will lose both, and we do now and then. We had a alert for two days about a huge windstorm coming, but it never did. I walked home from the bus in sunshine!
ReplyDeleteSunshine? You in the Pacific Northwest? Well DJan, I haven't seen any sun in over a week but I'm glad you did. I hope you had a nice Christmas. :^)
DeleteUgh. I hate waking up to things like that. I just feel as if I deal with catastrophes better AFTER I've had coffee, a shower, and gotten my teeth brushed. Just a thing that I've noticed about myself.
ReplyDeleteYour friend Charlie sounds as if he had some mental problems. After his tone deaf conversation with Pearl, he's lucky he didn't wind up with some physical problems on top of all that. Pearl strikes me as the kind of person who could open a mighty can of whup-ass if provoked.
Hahaha! Debby, thank you for cheering me up. Been in a gloomy way today with some relapsing and (as you pointed out) feeling like my entire day was out of whack with no water. You are right on target about Pearl, she reminds me of you. :^) I hope you had a nice Christmas.
DeleteWe did. You?
DeleteI'm glad to hear it. Just a quiet day by myself with some ham salad, movies and Christmas cookies. 🙂
DeleteIt was a quiet one for us too. Started the day with family. Ended the day with family.
DeleteInteresting neighbors, that's for sure. You could create a novel using those characters! Title it "Doug's Interesting Neighbors." It would be a best seller. BTW, you should always have a case of bottled water in your home. We do.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi, but I worry one of them would recognize themselves in my book and sue me! As for bottled water, do you know I've never bought the stuff, not even a single bottle!
DeleteWishing you a Happy and Healthy 2025
ReplyDeleteSiobhan x
Thank you Siobhan, it's nice to hear from you. Happy New Year to you too, my friend :^)
DeleteI just love hearing about your neighbors! I ride the bus to the senior center ( just us going there on bus) and I get a laugh every day from some of them. Yesterday a man who has had a stroke stumbled on the bus steps and landed on his behind. He exclaimed it was because he had had a beer and some crown royal that morning, lol. He had not. Have you watched Red One on Prime? I loved it. Glad to see you back to posting and hope that means you’re feeling better. Joyce
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Joyce, and it's good hearing from you. That man who fell on his behind sounds like an ornery fellow, I think I'd like him. :^) I didn't see Red One (don't have Prime) but I looked it up, sounds fun. Hope you had a nice Christmas. I am currently dealing with very good days, very bad ones. Right now it's not good, but I know I'm getting there.
DeleteHi Doug, I hope you didn’t have to go too long without water. You have some of the most interesting neighbours! Reading your comments it sounds like you had a quiet Christmas as did we. I see you are having warm weather like us too. Take care Doug and I hope for a better (health wise) 2025 for you.❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin
Thanks Robin, we got our water back around 2 then lost it again the next day until noon ha. And you're right, it's very warm out there. I am dealing with another relapse and kinda stuck inside though. Thank you for the good wishes, and I look forward to hearing more how you and retired Chuck are doing in 2025. 🙂
DeletePS Sounds like that 11 year old boy has a good imagination and was entertaining himself. A lot of kids can't do that.
