- An unframed canvas
- 30” square—no bigger or smaller
- Something with an Asian, modern or industrial influence
I recently bought (what I thought) was a black & white canvas of the Great Wall of China online, but it wasn’t black & white. It was a glum mix of gray, lavender & brown and just too dreary. Couldn't bring myself to keep it.
Here’s some other pieces I’m drawn to, the first is fishing boats on an African river, the second is a very bold artwork, titled “Shanghai Scribble”. I love big colors, I love modern, I love red. I just worry it’s TOO red.
The coastal one has a nice zen about it, and I don’t mind it being black & white; I’ve got plenty of colors in here already. I really like that red piece though... I think I'll do some more browsing.
Finally, I wanted to share another piece I got recently and the power of the internet. A month or so ago, I was watching a YouTube video showcasing “Heinz Lofts” in the former industrial part of the city. Several years ago, the old Heinz ketchup factory was converted to upscale condos.
In one of the units, there was a “minimalist circle map” of Pittsburgh on the wall. I really liked it, and began searching different art sites for it. Couldn’t find it anywhere.
I paused the video and did a screen print, cut and pasted it in MS Paint, did a Tin Eye image search. I found it on an Etsy site called Mapologist. I wrote the owner, asked if he still sold it and if so, could I get a smaller sized print.
After he said yes, I went on another site and ordered a sandalwood frame. I’ve been wanting something modern & light to hang on the wall outside my bathroom door, nothing too dark or heavy.
Anyway, here it is and it worked out just right. Happy New Year, everyone.

Congratulations on your fantastic art! I also really like that red piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks DJan, I'm glad I'm not alone! 🙂
DeleteYour persistence paid off. I vote for Rocky Coastline.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rocky, much appreciated. :^)
DeleteThat minimalist map piece is lovely. For the other space, go with what you love. It seems to me the rest of the space where it will be hung is pretty neutral so something bold will be a statement piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Maebeme, I really think I need to do some more looking--but I'm going to do it this year for sure.
DeleteI love your Pittsburg print!!! As for the dining nook wall, don't settle for anything less than absolute love at first sight. When you find it, you will know. ❤️❤️🦉
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Florence, you're exactly right--I need to remember that :^)
DeleteFrom a basically color perspective, I think the fishing boat one goes best with your existing colors. But if it were me and I 'had' to decide, it would definitely be the rocky coastline (because I love rocky coastlines!). But... I'm definitely NOT into bold colors, so that's just me... not a fan of red, but you should go with what makes you comfortable, it's your space!
ReplyDeleteAnd I do like your Pittsburgh pic!!
Thank you Rian, as much as I love that red print I am worried about the boldness of it... I'm going to keep looking. I'm glad you like my Pgh pic!
DeleteI have a stack of pictures I need to get on the walls. They have been waiting patiently since last fall. Thanks for the prompt.
ReplyDeleteHaha you're welcome Debby, I envy you :^)
DeleteThat Pittsburgh print is incredible! I love artwork like that--it's not just decorative but meaningful and personal. If you like red and love that piece (as you mentioned twice), I would get it. Otherwise, you might wish you had. I'm a fan of the boats and the street scene, but it's not my wall. :) I want to say that you'll know it when you see it; I sometimes do. I'm not quite satisfied, so I keep looking and realize immediately that a certain piece is The One.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Margaret, my friend Florence said the same thing--you'll know it when you see it. That's just how I felt when I bought art before (like a big primitive cave painting I once had and hung in my old apartment). I think I'm just going to keep looking, the red one feels a little too bold. :^)
DeleteMy goodness, from the evidence of this and the last couple of columns, you have a really neat apartment; quite unlike mine.
ReplyDeleteI like your Pittsburgh picture.
I have artwork on pretty much all my walls – 8 or 9 original oil paintings, half dozen or so water colors and the rest are lithographs. Oh, and two batiks. My favorites are an original Marc Chagall, a large painting by Peter Brushfield and a small one by John Axton.
I have only one spare wall and I’m trying to decide what goes there.
Thank you Peter, and I enjoyed reading about your home. It sounds classy, colorful and full of character--just like a certain maestro I know :^) PS. It's currently -10C in Pittsburgh, with the wind chill it's -18. I bet it's warmer in your corner of the globe.
DeleteYou bet – it’s currently 27C (about 81F).
DeleteI like the Pittsburgh map print! Hope you find exactly what you want for your other wall. You mentioned you like industrial, have you considered pics of trains, planes or freighters? Also, my first thought was, doesn't he draw, he should create his own art for that spot.
ReplyDeleteBobi, will you marry me? Thank you so much and YES I did think about a vintage plane or train artwork for there, I looked at several and now need to look at them again. As for drawing something, I thought of that too, but I'd much rather have someone else's. You really get me!
DeleteThe PIttsburg print is fabulous! I really like it! And that is the perfect frame. I suffer the entirely opposite problem. I have too much on my walls. My grandparents collected art and it has all come to me. I also have lots of artists in training who use masking tape to decorate any inch of available space. I am in awe of a blank wall!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though, I am looking at the Pittsburg print. You need something that brings you that much joy. I need you to feel better, to explore thrift shops and little antique stores and flea markets and find something equally unique and special. Something that calls out to you!
Thank you Miss Merry, I had to laugh at the masking tape! I think it sounds colorful and full of life and just like you. I sure do appreciate what you wrote here, I am very anxious to be my old self again and get out there. 🙂👍
DeleteHi Doug, I really like your Pittsburgh map! As so many others have said here you will know it when you see it in regards to the accent wall. We recently changed our guest bathroom and for now just put back the picture that was in there but I definitely want something else. I have found a few great pictures at antique stores and recently an owl pencil sketch at a thrift store. You never know when you will find something! Have a good day.❤️
ReplyDeleteHi Robin, thanks for sharing! Appreciate what you said here, and I wish I could shop for something in person as well. I've always liked your taste in decor, I'll be curious what you wind up with for yourself. Hmm I do like owls.. 🙂 Thank you my friend ❤️
DeleteHey Doug, Go Red! I like it; looks like it’s a deep enough red to add warmth and richness to your room!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!:
Mike TX
Thank you Mike, much appreciated! I was just wondering about you the other day, I'm glad to hear from you. 🙂👍
Delete👋I’m always here, checking to see how you are doing and what is happening in your world. I dont post very much, but I am here. 😁👍 Mike
DeleteI love your pictures..my sister is an artist..painting and drawings..she could easily have gallery openings..and I’m with anonymous/mike..I always check in even if I don’t comment
ReplyDeleteBeth
Wow Beth, that's pretty awesome about your sister. And thank you for what else you said here, it means a lot to read that. I hope you're keeping warm.
