One time he told me we should sign a pact. Whoever dies first, the other would enter the deceased one's home and remove any embarrassing things. A key to get in and location of the nasty stuff would be supplied in advance.
I didn’t really have anything but didn't want to let Mike down, so I said I had some adult stuff on an old laptop in my bedroom closet. When I asked Mike what he had, he just laughed and said I'd find everything hidden in his oven. Surprised, I said "Don't you cook?"
He just smiled at me and said yes, but not in the kitchen.
Anyway, it seems that every time I put something in my oven I think about Mike because of the nasty stuff I've been hiding in mine. About 5 years worth of grease and grime. How did I let it get this bad? I bought rubber gloves, large sponges and oven cleaner a couple months ago, but was waiting for the weather to warm so I could tackle this with an open window and plenty of ventilation. So with Spring arriving this week... ta-da!
I thought this would take about an hour and I wound up spending almost 3. But this turned out better than I hoped for. Y'know, I have an air fryer in my cupboard (a small one). I'm going to try and cook more with that going forward, every chance I get.
A couple days ago I ran up the street to Kuhn's to get some eggs and other things. When I walked down the dairy aisle, I saw Barb--aka Barb Wire--looking at the cheeses. I wrote about this woman last August, she's in her upper 70s, maybe 80. She always wears the same thing; a skin-tight black jogging suit and black baseball cap with her ponytail coming out the back end. She's pretty fit.
The woman has some peculiar issues though--the first time I met her at the Senior Center last summer, she asked me if I grew up in the city or somewhere else. When I said in the country, she snapped "I think you're too soft to be a country boy! I think you're a liar!"
But I haven't seen her since September, so I figured I'd let bygones be bygones and say hello. I walked up and said "Hello Barb, do you remember me?" She turned around and frowned, and said "You look familiar..." I told her I used to be a regular visitor to the center but haven't been there since last fall because of health issues. She said "How did you know it was me from behind? BECAUSE YOU WERE CHECKING OUT MY BEHIND!"
Sigh... I'm looking forward to returning to the center, hopefully this summer. I'm not so much looking forward to that. 😣
Finally, I've had this paper sack with "For retirement" written across its front for umpteen years in my old apartment's storage locker and now my current one, and I honestly can't remember what I put in here.
It's pretty heavy, I'm guessing a stack of books. I decided it was time I opened it up and took a look.
Inside were unopened dvds of Babylon 5, a sci-fi tv series from the 1990s that I've never seen. There are 5 seasons in here, plus a box labeled Babylon 5 Movie Collection.
When did I buy these? According to Amazon, they were purchased in November 2007. It's a little kooky that I can remember conversations with my friend Mike from 20 plus years ago, but draw a blank when it comes to these dvds.
Are there any sci-fi fans out there that have seen and liked this show? Is it worth watching? These hologram boxes are pretty cool, but there's so much here and frankly I feel done with 90s television. I don't know what the me from 2007 was thinking. 😐

Hey Dug! Wow. A Bab5 motherload. Color me green with envy! I loved that show and can highly recommend it. The characters had depth and story lines were intricate and fulfilling. Lotsa guest stars. Many of the actors have since passed. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Also congrats on the oven job. Some elbow grease got rid of the other kind. Take care, Kris in Ohio
ReplyDeleteKris, thanks so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I honest-to-God don't remember buying these. I think it's because I saw Billy Mumy giving an interview and telling the Trek fans to give his show a chance. Anyway, I appreciate your input thanks again! :^)
DeleteI've never seen Babylon 5 but would certainly give it a try! You remind me that my oven is disgusting. I tried the self-cleaning option once and thought it was going to blow up. The spray cleaner makes me dizzy and sick and I can't think of another way to get the gunk out of there. How did you do it? That woman is OFF the wall--or her rocker!
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks Margaret! Yes that spray is the worst! Sprayed it all over in there, then let it sit overnight. The next day, long rubber gloves and I had to wear a covid mask. Remove your glasses too, that spray can damage them. And yes, Barb Wire has a pretty big chip on her shoulder!
DeleteOh, I should clean my oven too. Either that or buy a new one. I’ll think about it (for a few years).
ReplyDeleteI was a country boy originally too, and I’m too soft. That’s because I was a townie, my dad was a tailor not a farmer.
I’m not the one to ask about Babylon 5. I’ve never seen a single episode.
Haha thank you for sharing, Maestro. Cool about your dad. :^)
DeleteDo you like reading about time travel as well as movies? If so try Jodi Taylor's "Chronicles of Saint Mary's" and "Time Police" series! Your library might have it?
ReplyDeleteCeci
Thanks Ceci, time travel books are even better. Currently reading "The Third Rule of Time Travel". I will definitely look for your recommendations at my library. 🙂👍
DeleteI am very fortunate to have really crappy lungs. No way can I inhale the necessary chemicals that you need to clean my oven messes! This means my dear hubby has always cleaned my oven! Honestly, I have seen much worse than yours. I have a countertop toaster oven with an air fryer setting and a broiler. I cook most of our meals in that.
ReplyDeleteNever watched Babylon 5 so I can't advise. How funny you sealed it and made it special and forgot.
Miss Merry, that doesn't sound fortunate but I'm glad you have a Mr Merry for such things. This is ironic, my friend and former classmate Pen has a bad migraine condition and just told me her hubby does theirs as well. And you're right, that spray is like inhaling fire! That's why I waited 5 years 🤮
DeleteDoug B5 just might be the best scifi show ever. it's what DS9 was modeled off. I actually recorded them on VHS when they aired and the daughters watched them over and over once I showed them the tapes. Latter got the discs. The great thing is it's a story arc. Random stuff that happens in Season 1 matters years later. A lot of humor and really good characters that aren't cardboard cutouts but change as we watch.
ReplyDeleteIn my world it is way better than any Trek after Kirk. I've tried but haven't been able to rewatch any of the later Trek but have probably gone through Babylon 5 5 or 6 times. The last Season isn't as good because they thought they were going to be cancelled and so wrapped up the main story line. The movie Legend of the Rangers is poor, and honestly none of the movies are any better than the regular episodes. Chekov has a great reoccurring role. Heck there even is a CD with the artists singing that is pretty good.
Gee Ken, this was awesome, thank you! I did hear a rumor many years ago that DS9 was modeled after B5. As a matter of fact, I'm watching DS9 right this minute. 🙂 Also Ken, I could not agree more about the current Trek. I pretty much gave up on it. I appreciate what you said here, I needed to hear this. 🙂👍
DeleteAre you still in contact with Mike? I'd be very curious as to what he keeps in his oven...or maybe not. :)
ReplyDeleteBarb wire sounds like a real crank. I suggest you avoid her and if you can't just pretend you don't remember her. That should show her that she and her behind aren't that memorable.
Interesting choice for your retirement. I booked three ocean cruises for my first 90 days of retirement. In between I decluttered my house. One part fun, one part necessary. :)
Haha--Maebeme, I would love to hear from Mike again. I really liked him a lot, but I haven't seen or heard from him in 20 years. He left our company 4-5 years before I did. Good advice about Barb Wire, thank you--as for your 3 cruises, for the start of your retirement, cool! Well, those dvds were packed away when I was in my early 40s, my plans changed a bit since then :^)
DeleteDoug, this is so interesting! You have no recollection of buying the DVD’s??? I am loving all the comments too. Never watched an episode of B5 but now I am getting intrigued. Hmmm, have to look into it. Like a few others have said I don’t clean ovens, that is Chuck’s job. We usually use plain old baking soda and water with a scrubby do-hickey. I know ours was done recently because when I baked Chuck his birthday pie in December the blueberries spilled over a bit and made a mess. It got cleaned fairly soon after that. The Barb Wire lady…goodness, she does say inappropriate things! Have a good weekend Doug, we are actually sunny and 60° here today!❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin, you are a dear--this gave me a little chuckle, thank you! I am not kidding--I don't remember buying these B5 discs but it HAD to have been an impulse buy. 20 years ago I belonged to a sci-fi comic book message board called "Blammo" and I'm very sure someone there said something about the show that motivated me to buy them. I guess when I got them, I was already into the message boards, work, Star Trek, my (new) blog.... oh well! And that is nice to hear about Chuck being your stove-guy, he is now the third guy I've heard about. Maybe I'll start a club. :^) Thanks again Robin, I appreciate your comments. Enjoy your 60 temps (it's very nice here as well). Take care. ❤️
DeleteHi Doug, I have never commented on a blog post before but I cannot believe your past self stashed a complete set of B5 for your retirement. Once you watch it you will realise you did yourself a massive favour! Here in the UK amongst those in the know, B5 is regarded as the most epic sci-fi series. My husband and I rewatch it all every 10 years. I can only echo some of the comments above that it is not perfect but once you are hooked by the story arc it becomes an obsessive watch, and you will want to watch an episode a day. You might like to blog about it too, because you will find you want to discuss some of the revelations in the story as it unfolds. The parallels to DS9 are really interesting too. We like Star Trek in many of its forms, but we love B5! Happy watching! Whilst I am posting a comment, I wish you all the best with your long COVID issues, as a fellow sufferer (2.5 years), you have my sympathy and empathy and I am sending you my best wishes, from Bee x
ReplyDeleteHi Bee, this was so nice to read this morning, thank you so much for everything you shared here. Gee you really have me looking forward to watching this show now! To be honest I haven't even tested the dvds yet to ensure they still play but I'm sure they will. Thank you again. I'm sorry to hear of your own long covid issues, mine are pretty rough right now. Is yours ongoing or have you made a full recovery? Bee thanks again and I hope I hear from you again. 🙂👍
DeleteI have never seen this series, so I expect you to return with a review. Barb Wire sounds like a very o-fence--ive soul. Remember in the 70's, Lost In Space? I echo robot. If he would have caught sight of her in the grocery first, he would have been waving his arms, flashing his lights and shouting 'Danger! Danger!'
ReplyDeleteSeriously, this woman is a very damaged soul. Feel sorry for her, from a distance!
Haha thank you Debby, I've dealt with her before, a year ago at Red Lobster. She’s harmless... I hope. 😊
DeleteHi Dug! Sorry I'm late responding, but DH and I were down in New Orleans for a family funeral. Just got back. Your Babylon 5 sounds like a nice surprise. I've never heard of it, but DH remembers it.
ReplyDeleteAs for the oven cleaning, we no longer use our built in oven. It died a while back and was too expensive to buy another... since we also have 3 ovens in our Aga as well as a toaster oven air fryer that is great. The Aga self cleans pretty much and I do have to clean the other on occasion, but not as much trouble as the wall oven was. It could self clean, but like someone else mentioned, it got extremely hot and I always worried that it wouldn't turn itself off.
Now... as for Barb Wire, I've heard of people like her called "Walmartians" at Walmart. You can really see some sights. Your "friend" seems to fit that category. As for "checking out her behind"... if she's wearing skin tight jogging pants... that must be her aim. I've seen some wearing pink skin tight pants and they may have well been naked. I'm not a prude, but what are they thinking?
And lastly, not remembering buying something is not unusual for me. But it's sometimes a nice surprise. Recently found some teabags from England that I must have bought at the British Emporium with my Lyle's Golden syrup... don't remember buying them, but happy that I did!
Hi Rian! I'm very glad to hear from you, but sorry about the funeral news. I hope it wasn't someone you were very close to. That doesn't sound right, but loss is always so hard... I enjoyed hearing about the Aga, you used to write about your British stove more and I miss it. Maybe it's time you did another Aga blog for newer readers... :^) As for Barb Wire, I got a lot more of that from her last summer when I was back at my senior center for a couple months. That's just who she is, all you can do is shake your head or roll your eyes! The funny thing is, when she yelled that at me in the store, a couple customers were nearby and were trying not to laugh. Oh well! Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only one who forgets buying things....haha. hope you have a nice weekend Rian, thanks again.
DeleteHi Doug, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the DVDs are going to work for you and you enjoy B5. If you find the first few episodes don’t live up to the hype, keep going as they are laying the foundations for what happens in the rest of the series. Apologies for a lengthy post but here is my experience so far with COVID. My Long COVID symptoms presented as exhaustion and severe pain in the right side of my face/head/neck and teeth. This was diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia, and I was prescribed very strong painkillers and had to wait a year to see a specialist. I was frantic to find a way to help myself and after some research I had acupuncture for several months which helped to manage the symptoms and pain and meant I was able to return to work full time. I also started tai chi practice (just a simple 18 minute routine following along to the internet at home), and reviewed my diet and tried to eat more healthy, to manage stress and inflammation. All these things helped and when I eventually saw the specialist I was diagnosed with permanent nerve damage in the right side of my face caused by COVID, (which is a better diagnosis than trigeminal neuralgia). Over time the pain has decreased and I now have occasional flare ups, generally linked to stress or illness. I would say I have made a good recovery and as long as I manage to get regular exercise and a good diet and avoid stress, my symptoms are manageable. My consultant recommended that I continue to wear a face mask in public to reduce the risk of catching COVID again, and I pay for a private vaccination each year and also have a flu vaccine. I find still wearing a mask a little awkward and occasionally someone will ask why I am wearing it, but people are generally very understanding when I explain my situation. I would say that acupuncture really helped me and there have been studies in the UK looking into the effectiveness of acupuncture on long COVID. My understanding of what my practitioner told me is that the virus/infection/inflammation caused by COVID remains at the nerve endings and acupuncture can be used to ‘draw it out’. I found doing something practical to try to help myself gave me hope, and every acupuncture session helped me to relax and sleep so that was beneficial in itself. Every case is different, but acupuncture might be something to consider if available to you. I have been following your blog for some time and have been concerned about the severity of your flare ups, and how debilitating and demoralising they can be for you. I hope you can find something that helps you too. Very best wishes, Bee
ReplyDeleteBee, thank you so much for sharing your story here. I sat here and read this 3 times over. Your symptoms match mine exactly. Face, head, neck and teeth. It's not as severe as it was the first year for myself, but it's varying degrees of constant. I was also almost diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. The acupuncture for yourself sounds promising, but it frightens me too. I'm afraid to fool around with things after this past Sept when I went to the dentist and got a couple shots of Novocaine and had a full relapse. I should still look into it though so thank you again for sharing all this. I appreciate your input on the B5 series too. 🙂❤️
DeleteHi Doug, I cannot believe how similar our experiences have been. I have been reading your message over and again, and reflecting on the past couple of years for both of us, and particularly your experience at the dentist. Not wanting to overshare, but last year I had root canal surgery on a rear molar on the COVID side of my face, and it was extremely painful. (That’s an understatement as I just don’t have words). I had 4 sessions at the dentist which totalled over 10 hours, and each session really set me back. Until now I hadn’t fully understood the impact those dental treatments had on me, but I think like you, they caused an increase in symptoms/relapse. If I hadn’t have felt so awful at the time, and if I had the money I might have resumed acupuncture last year to help overcome the effects of the dental work. I will keep this in mind for the future. I quite appreciate your being wary of trying something new for fear that it might be detrimental. I can truly appreciate the feeling of relief when you almost feel normal again and the fear of relapse. I am careful to avoid air conditioning or strong wind on my face as I know that can be a trigeminal neuralgia trigger and it does affect the nerves in my face. I am trying to think of anything else I have tried that may have helped that I can suggest to you! Last year I gave up sugar for 8 months. I didn’t even eat fruit. I have a feeling that this helped, but it was hard to maintain. I am going to try to adopt a more balanced approach cutting out processed food and making fruit my only sweet treat this year. I will continue to read your blog and follow your progress and comment. I do hope that time will heal us both, alongside rest, regular exercise and a good diet. Take care Bee
ReplyDeleteThank you for shar8ng Bee, though I am very sorry for your si ilar painful experiences. But I'm glad we know each other, no one understands all this like we do. I hope I continue hearing from you.
