Recently, a woman who lives down the hall from me knocked on my door. I’ve seen her a few times on our floor, rode the elevator with her a couple times, but we’ve never spoken to one another.
So I said hi, can I help you? She asked me if I ever smelled marijuana in my apartment. I said no, never. She said “I smell it in mine sometimes, could it be coming from upstairs?”
I said that was certainly possible. Whenever the woman who lives above me cooks something with garlic, I can smell it down here—it must come down through the heating vent.
She said “I haven’t smoked pot since I was 19 and that was over 50 years ago, but it’s not a smell you forget. Have you ever smoked it?”
I was pretty surprised she asked, but said no, I never did.
She said “If I got some pot would you like to smoke it with me?”
What the--!! I said no thank you, and she should be careful. Steiner has a strict policy regarding marijuana. Not even for medical purposes unless you ingest it, like those cannabis gummies. She said she hoped she didn't upset me. I said of course not, and asked if she was an undercover cop or something. She laughed and said no.
Later that night I told my (very Christian) friend Diana what happened. Diana said "She probably thinks you're a real square."
There is another woman on my floor (a little younger, name unknown) who keeps to herself, talks to no one—but she recently hung a sign in our laundry room that read:
Below her loud words she taped 3 tiny pieces of fuzz on the bottom of the paper. Even without my glasses I could see it was just dryer lint—is she crazy? Steiner does not like crazy. They do not like reports of bedbugs either. In the 7 years I’ve lived here, 4-5 tenants on various floors have reported bedbugs—and all 4-5 tenants were gone in a couple months time.
I don’t know what happened to them. I don’t know if it was their choice to leave or Steiners.
Lastly, I recently had a couple run-ins with my 70 year old neighbor Dee. The first was a couple weeks ago, when I was exiting the building as she was coming in, and she asked if the recent ‘door slams’ from her apartment bothered me.
I said they made me jump a couple times, but it was no big deal. She said “That’s Rosa, honey! She’s my housekeeper. She’s here one day a week, I’m not going to say anything. Good housekeepers are hard to find.”
So are good neighbors Dee, and you are taking yours for granted but whatever.
The second time was a couple nights ago when her tv was louder than usual. When I knocked on her door, she shouted “YEAH?” without opening it. I said it was me and asked if she could turn it down a little. She shouted “I CAN’T HEAR A WORD YOU’RE SAYIN’ HONEY!”
I shouted back “NEVERMIND I’LL CALL STEINER AND LET THEM HANDLE IT.” Jeez Louise!
She opened her door then, just wide enough to peek out and asked if her tv was too loud. I said yes. She said she had hearing aids but often forgot to put them in. She added “I don't know how far my tv is from my couch, probably 20 feet." I said “I have a pretty good idea. The same as mine, 7-8 feet.”
She said “No honey, Steiner told me when I moved in all the apartments are different.”
Oh Dee… they meant there are 3 layouts: studios, 1 bedroom units, 2 bedrooms. We both have 1 bedrooms, yours is a mirror of my own. I was friends with the tenant who lived there before you, plus I caught a glimpse of your stuff the day you moved in.
I wish I could show Dee this layout I came up with showing my apartment and hers, but she might not appreciate my view on things. Especially when my view includes her things. The End!

It takes all kinds of kinds.
ReplyDeleteWell, when you live in a high-rise with 120 other people... :^)
DeleteWow, you do have some interesting people in the building! You don't think there really are bedbugs, do you? I'm terrified of them. Also of ticks.
ReplyDeleteMargaret I only knew of 2 confirmed cases of bedbugs, 4-5 years ago on the first floor. (Two units side by side.) I think the woman who hung that sign is mental. I'm more afraid of ticks!
DeleteAll part of the rich tapestry of community living maybe ? I struggle with
ReplyDeletenosy neighbours, more so as I get older
Siobhan
I like that description, thanks Siobhan. I feel lucky, most people here are pretty private. :^)
DeleteDoug, your layout is very specific, but you forgot one thing to include her hearing aids on her bedroom night stand. - LOL Little old lady
ReplyDeleteHaha--thanks LOL :^) I actually don't know how Dee's place is laid out, I just saw a couple glimpses of her furniture the day she moved in. But if she wanted to give me a tour...
DeleteBeing in close proximity to your neighbours is always an interesting situation. It sounds like you have a few less than appealing ones for certain!
ReplyDeleteDo let us know if the first woman leaves the building...if she does we'll know she found someone willing to smoke with her. :)
BTW, marijuana is legal here in Canada, although not in public, but one can smell the odor frequently.
Thanks Maebeme, and thanks for sharing that fact about Canada. Well, right now it's not fully legal in PA, but that may change in a year or so. But our landlord is VERY strict about it's use on the property. A nice couple was asked to leave at Christmas.
DeleteI live on a street of identical houses, the only floor plan difference is some are 3 bedroom and some have 4 smaller bedrooms. I have lived here since Dec 1978 and have been inside most of the houses. And we have neighbors who say the floor plans are different in different houses. As far as I know, there are only two with a different floor plan.
DeleteHouse 1 took out the bedroom wall near the living room which turned it into a 2 bedroom with a larger living room. And me who has a handy husband who has rebuilt all closets to face different ways, cut my kitchen into two rooms to make a smaller kitchen and separate pantry and added a 500 sq foot family room. We also moved the windows around before residing.
We previously lived in apartments. And if you are going to live in the same building with other people you need to be respectful. And there are always a few crazies in the bunch :)
Hope you are feeling better.
Thanks for sharing Miss Merry, I think your 500 sq feet family room is the size of my place! I was just now telling a friend of mine (who I grew up with) that I can't explain it, but I've enjoyed living in apts since I moved out on my own but having a good neighbor means everything. I very much like Dee. :^)
DeleteDug, the only apartment I've ever lived in was a married student apartment in college. I graduated in January (2 days after our wedding), and DH didn't graduate till May. But although it was only for 6 months, I thought apartments were fun. You probably know your neighbors more than people in houses do. This can be good or bad... ha!... but definitely interesting. I've never smoked marijuana.... (don't even like to take meds or anything that makes my head funny). As for Dee, I forget to put my hearing aids in... especially if they have closed caption... so I can see that her TV could be really loud. If it's bothering you, I would think she would now realize that... and lower it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Rian, I always enjoy and appreciate what you have to say. To be very honest, people that live in apartments are much more private I think than regular houses. You would be surprised how you can live next door to someone for years like I did in my last building, and know nothing about them! As for marijuana, I remember pretty well how it smells from my high school days. I don't know why kids did it but they used to smoke it in our bathrooms there. As for Dee, that's more than okay forgetting her hearing aids. She's actually a pretty good neighbor, I feel lucky to have her next door. I hope you're doing good. 🙂👍
DeleteDoug, I’ve been laughing quietly about Marijuana Lady since you posted! She was testing for a reaction before inviting you too share - right??! I think you should refer to her from now on as Mary Jane!
ReplyDeleteMike TX
Haha gee I'm glad someone laughed here, thanks Mike! PS Mary Jane, perfect 😆
DeleteAs you know, my situation is the opposite of yours. I’m stuck up here on my own (the penthouse suite, I suppose you could call it if you were being pretentious). There’s no one else on my level.
ReplyDeleteIndeed there’s only another apartment in my part of the building, the one below which has the same setup as mine – three bedrooms, so lots of space.
However, since November I’ve been on my own as Hazel (down below) moved out as her landlords (her sister and brother-in-law) decided to sell the place. The new owners bought in March but they haven’t moved in yet.
There are 4 more apartments behind us, but they are smaller – 2 bedrooms, and I really only know one of the couples who live there.
So, I don’t have the interaction with my fellow tenants that you do, and as I’m rather introverted, I find this a plus.
You do have a lot of space Peter, I don't know what I'd do with all that. But honestly, I'm as introverted as yourself. I have VERY little interaction with my neighbors. I just told a friend on the phone last night I have only seen my neighbor Dee 3 times since she moved in here 4 years ago.
DeleteThe first bedroom is the music room, that contains all my CDs and records as well as serious high end stereo equipment.
DeleteThe second bedroom has all my books and all my wine – plus the computer on which I’m writing this.
The third bedroom has a bed where I sleep and keep my clothes.
Then there’s the kitchen, living room (where I eat and watch TV - not necessarily at the same time, but quite often).
Then there’s the other essential rooms.
My goodness! :^)
DeleteGoodness Doug, interesting doesn’t even begin to describe the people in your building! Chuck and I lived on and off in apartments the first two years we were married, that’s it. We had some pretty terrible neighbours so we were very glad to get into a house. Thanks for sharing the layout of your apartment. Take care.❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you Robin. Well, I do like my modest apartment very much, but I'd trade it in a heartbeat for your lovely home. You should know I'm not just saying that, I love your style. Anyway, neighbors do mean everything when you live in a giant sardine can like I do, but I do like my fellow sardines very much. Thanks again, my dear friend. 🧡😊👍
DeleteI love hearing about your interesting neighbors, some people just don’t have filters. I had an interesting interaction last week as I was sitting outside the senior center. An Indian woman probably in her 40s asked if I went to the “ day care” here. I corrected her saying yes, the Senior Center. She said she wanted her dad to come every day. I said I don’t go every day because I need to clean my house etc, and she said “ you still clean your house?” I know my hair is turning white, but dang! I didn’t know if she was insulting me or not. 😊. Joyce
ReplyDeleteHaha! Thank you Joyce, and thank you for sharing that--I laughed out loud at "day care"!! And good for you for still cleaning your own house, my goodness.. :^)
