The Laddie in Red and a trip to Carmody's Grille

Today was my second senior outing since last September, a restaurant trip to Carmody's Grille on Neville Island.

I've been dealing with some oral inflammation these last couple weeks, but had to get out and be with people.  So I filled my pocket with Ricola Mouth Lozenges and off I went.

When I got to the center, they were taking votes on future restaurant outings.  I was excited to vote on a couple places like PF Changs & Mister Lee's, only to see them get shot down in favor of Chili's and Cracker Barrel.  I don't know if I'll be going, these older people are in the majority and keep opting for the same tired places.

My votes never count, and darn it I'm craving some Chinese!

Anyway, today's lunch was nothing spectacular but the company is always great, it's a nice group of people.  I even had a fun, friendly conversation with "Barb Wire", a short-tempered woman I wrote about on here a year ago.

Not much to share here, just a few photos.

On my way to the Senior Center, I saw they got a pretty groovy electronic sign out front.  Nice!

Here's Carmody's Grille, on Neville Island.  It's a pretty bleak area but nice inside

My boy Dennis told the waitress  "I want an order of cheese balls, an order of lemon pepper chicken wings, an order of garlic parmesan chicken wings, I want onion rings, a double Bloody Mary, an Alabama Slammer, a Reuben sandwich with french fries, a Hot Sausage sandwich with fries and slaw, a bowl of your famous Turtle Soup for here, and a bowl to take home!"

Here he is getting started with his soup and appetizers, before they bring his entrees

Here was my Reuben & Coke.  The fries weren't great, but the sandwich was very, very hot (just the way I like it) and very fresh

My bill came to $16.00 and Dennis was $173.00!  (His drinks alone were $40.00.)  I also have to say we had the kindest waitress I've ever met.  She asked each of our names at the start, and remembered them throughout.

On our way out I told her how much I appreciated her great service and she said "Thank you I'm finally getting the hang of this place--I just started my 40th year here a week ago!"

  1. Doug, I am so glad you were able to get to the Senior Centre get together! Your red shirt looks great on you. Goodness, that is a pile of food Dennis ordered. I assume a lot of it went home with him. $16.00 is pretty inexpensive for a lunch these days. By the way Doug, my b.p. was way down when I was at my doctor’s appointment on Monday so no meds! Yahoo! Take care!💜❤️

    1. Thanks Robin, and yes he took most of that home--and wow, so glad to hear about your BP numbers! Well, that's all that nature hiking 😊❤️

  2. I'm guessing Dennis doesn't do much cooking at home? lol! That's a LOT of food and (I'm sure) a LOT of leftovers. I approve of your choice of sandwich. I love a good Reuben!

    1. Haha Jennifer you got that right! He did pack it all up... And thank you, that Reuben was pretty tasty 😋

  3. I crave some Chinese as well. We used to have an excellent “sit down” place in the local strip but alas it was a victim of covid.
There were also three rather good take away places but they suffered the same fate.
There are hundreds of excellent Chinese establishments in the city but that requires taking a train (only a 15 minute ride).

Did Dennis finish all that? Any one of those dishes would be enough for me.

I like a good Reuben too. The place that made the best one around here was yet another victim of covid – we had a quite severe lock-down in Melbourne. It did, however, prevent a lot of cases based on the statistics from the rest of the country.

I hope that waitress gets paid what she deserves.

    1. Thanks Peter. Well, there's a couple Chinese places in my neighborhood, when my inflammation is better I'll have to check them out. And Dennis did take mist if that food home with him! I sure hope that waitress was tipped well too.

  4. Doug, you look handsome there in red. I'm glad you went on the restaurant outing. Too bad you'll never get to have Chinese; I guess your companions can't get out of their comfort zone. That's a whopping difference between yours and Dennis's bill - he had the same entree as you plus more! That was nice of you to thank the waitress. You're a mensch.

    1. Thanks Steve, you're very kind. I'm glad I got to go too, but still not out of the woods with the LC stuff, darn it. I can't even talk on the phone right now. But it was a nice time out! I hope you're doing well. 🙂

  5. Dug, I'm sorry your vote for your favorite restaurants didn't win. I've heard of PF Changs (and have even bought their Chicken and Fried Rice at the grocery), but have never eaten there. DH and I have been trying a few new breakfast places lately. We tried Hot Pancakes last week and the House Cafe this week. Both were good... not great, but good. He always gets Eggs Benedict and coffee and I always get grits (I love good grits) and tea. Your Reuben looks good. And can't believe Dennis and his orders... But so glad you got to go! We hope to go to Frogg Crepes next week. They make really good crepes!

  6. Great news! So happy you got out for a bit. I can't believe all the food Dennis orders. He must have a good income. Does he tip well? Maybe you need to hire an Uber and take yourself out for Chinese when you're feeling up to it. You certainly deserve it!

    1. Thank you Bobi, you're very kind and I'm glad to hear from you, sure hope you're doing great. Dennis is retired like myself, but has a good pension and everything, he's very comfortable. And doggone it, the Uber suggestion is a good idea! 😋

  7. So happy you were able to go on the outing!!! Just a change of scenery can feel so good and a great sandwich makes it even better!!! Your waitress sounds like a true professional and a hoot to boot.
That Dennis. He must be a hand full! Glad he wasn't doing the driving. It sounds like he was grocery shopping instead of restaurant eating, but as long as he enjoys himself - good for him!
I am so glad you were able to get out and about. Sorry about the restaurant vote. Disappointing.

  9. Glad you were able to get out and enjoy some food and company! Gotta say though…those could be the saddest looking french fries I have ever seen. I’ve never understood how restaurants can mess up fries! I go out to eat once a month and it’s about that time of the month, so I’m excited. Probably going to do fish & chips, which is one of my favorites! ❤️

    1. Thanks Jase and so agreed about the fries! Hope you enjoy your fish & chips, shoot I could go for that too 😋

  10. There should be a rule with lunch groups that you cannot repeat a place until the next year. So many restaurants, so little time! Also, if you don't like one month's selection, there will be next month.

Our Ladies Who Lunch try to find new places each month, but once a year we return to one of the oldest restaurants in Fresno because they decorate so beautifully and have a Christmas tree for us to have photo taken.

Sometimes the restaurant isn't one I'm crazy about, but it's never about the food, but rather the company.

    1. Thanks for sharing dkzody. Well, when it comes to variety in restaurants and the company of others, I suppose I want my cake and to eat it too. 🙂

  11. Glad you pushed through and went on the outing! Despite how you are felling, you look great in the photo! You should order take out Chinese if you really want it! I’ve never door-dashed myself but it might be worth figuring it out to get what you want! And Dennis! What is the world is he going to do with all that food!?! I know Carmody’s Grille! We’ve been there for lunch before and have always enjoyed it. It’s over in our neck of the woods. Keep pushing forward Doug and before you know it the good days will outweigh the bad ones! Kimba🌻

    1. Thanks Kimba! You're very kind and yes, glad I went. Never been there before, I like trying new things and I can't get enough of my pal Dennis. He took all that food home with him! Appreciate the good wishes and hope all us good with you! 🙂💚

  12. Sounds like Barb Wire's meds got sorted. Does Dennis take that food to go or eat most of it there??! My gosh!

    1. Haha--thanks Debby, good call on Barb Wire. Actually, they forgot to put in her order and she said "What do I do" and I said "Stand on the table and scream at the top of your lungs" and she laughed and her temper cooled :^) And yes, Dennis took it all home with him!

  13. I'm delighted that you got to go and your fries do look kind of...dried out? What does Dennis do with all that food?? PF Chang's has an excellent menu. I wasn't familiar with the other restaurant you named. We don't have Cracker Barrel or Chilis around here. I agree with your taste!

    1. Thanks Margaret! The fries weren't awful, but I've had better. The reuben was awesome though. As for the restaurants, I know the center wants to attract younger seniors, but Cracker Barrel is for older folk. It's pretty square. As for Dennis, he took all that food home. He just got a new air fryer. 🙂
