When I saw the price on the bag, I almost handed them back--$7.60?? The man behind the counter saw my expression and said "They're 100% seasoned breasts, if you don't like them bring 'em back."
That was the first time someone in the supermarket offered me a guarantee, so I thanked him and brought them home.
They were bigger than I thought, I had half of one for dinner that night on a soft roll with mayonnaise and pickle slices, it was delicious. I do my share of cooking, but shy away from frying chicken in my little cubbyhole of a kitchen.
Here's what I had the next night for dinner, and the night after that.
Chicken fillet with roasted little potatoes & green peppers, and a good honey mustard sauce I made with mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and honey
The next night, I assembled this "fried chicken salad" Pittsburgh style (french fries on top). It was pretty tasty, but I had trouble eating it because of an LC flare-up.
As long as I'm at it, here's some pancakes I made for breakfast this morning. They're not exactly perfect, but they're big and crispy on the edges and perfectly delicious.
Hmm... these photos looked a lot better when I was starving and getting ready to eat!
Do you remember Griffin Dunne? He's the son of famed crime writer Dominick Dunne, and co-starred with David Naughton in 1981's An American Werewolf in London. I haven't seen that horror flick in decades, but it had a huge impact on my 19 year old self with its gallows humor and cutting edge special effects.
He is also known for his younger sister Dominique Dunne, who played the older daughter in the first Poltergeist film, the one who screamed "What's happening!!!" She was strangled on the front lawn of her apartment building by her deranged ex-boyfriend on October 30, 1982. She was only 22.
Anyway, the reason I mention him is because of a memoir he wrote about his family, "The Friday Afternoon Club". Something compelled me to buy it (which I'm surprised I did as I swore off celebrity bios a few years ago).In fact, I totally forgot I owned this until I was reviewing last year's Visa purchases. The book was still sitting in my bedroom closet, in it's cardboard box with some moth traps I bought from Amazon.
I've been spending the last week or so reading it, and do you ever come across something so good that you force yourself to ration it, to make it last? I've been doing just that with this book, that's how great it is. Exceptionally well written and a fascinating read of a somewhat famous family rocked by dysfunction, fame and tragedy.
Born in 1955, Griffin sort of "coasted" into the entertainment industry, mostly because of where he grew up. His best friend was Carrie Fisher, and they lived together in the 1970s while both got small acting jobs here & there.
He says in 1977 when Carrie landed the part of Princess Leia in Star Wars, she would call him or her mother Debbie Reynolds nightly and joke about the corny film and it's dumb title, and prayed no one ever saw it. Debbie would remind her that good or bad, it still came with a weekly paycheck. Six months later the movie premiered and changed Carrie's life forever.
I'm in the final third of the book now, about his sister Dominique. Her murderer only got a 6 1/2 year sentence, and then only served 2 1/2 years before being released. He even went back to work as a sous chef at the same LA restaurant he worked at before--until the Dunnes set up camp there and handed fliers out to patrons detailing who would be preparing their food. The killer (John Sweeney) changed his name and moved to another state.
Speaking of cries for justice, look what I got the day before yesterday. After seeing those recent "Trump promos" funded by the US government I pray more than anything my vote counts for something.

$7.60 for cooked chicken of any size is a BARGAIN, but for 3 pieces, WOW.
ReplyDeleteIt was for 3/4 of a pound of cooked chicken breast, but I still think it was too high for this area, dkzody. I could've gotten a rotisserie chicken for close to that.
DeleteYour meals look delicious! I chuckled at the salad, not only for the fries but the whole chicken and egg joke. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad to see your ballot has been received. Never doubt that one vote has no impact, otherwise no one would need to do so.
Thank you Maebeme, haven't missed a single election since 1980. As for the salad, I did feel a little funny having chicken and egg at the same time but boy it was good 😋
DeleteMaebeme I almost forgot--Happy Thanksgiving, my northern friend 🙂
DeleteThanks Dug!
DeleteI'm so sorry about the LC flare up! I want to come eat at your place. You prepare delicious looking meals. I've missed one primary election since I started voting at 18. I'm hoping to get my ballot soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret, you're very kind. My meals seem pretty cavemanish though, compared to your daughters! And the same here, I've only missed one election since 1980 (Reagan's second term) and I vowed NEVER AGAIN.
DeleteYour meals always look good, Dug. And you certainly got your most out of that chicken. I didn't know the Dunne name, but found it interesting about Carrie Reynolds and her early thoughts about Star Wars. I'm afraid that I don't read memoirs or non-fiction. I'm a fiction gal... but will enjoy historical fiction on occasion. Makes history come more alive for me. And yes, we already mailed in our ballots too!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rian, I'm still annoyed at the high price for those chicken fillets, the same deli sells 3 fried chicken thighs for only $2.39--but I did enjoy these very much. I'm surprised you're not familiar with the Dunne name, their dad is a famous non-fiction writer oh wait you said that's not your thing, haha. Okay! As for your ballots, good to hear! I AM PRAYING FOR TEXAS! (I'm not joking!!)
DeleteI know you're not joking. I'm praying for us too!
DeleteYummy looking food as usual, Doug. Great idea putting fries on salad (better than croutons IMO); I think a mayonnaise based dressing would go well with it. As for having chicken and eggs in the same dish - Didn't Paul Simon get the title of his song "Mother and Child Reunion" from a Chinese restaurant menu item that had both chicken and eggs? The Griffin Dunne book sounds fascinating. I thought the transformation scenes in "American Werewolf" were excellent. Right now, as I'm about to finish Daniel Defoe's "Journal of the Plague Year", I'm going to start on Petula Clark's memoirs. Love her. Pip pip, Cheerio, my friend!
ReplyDeleteSteve from Toronto
What a great response, thanks Steve! Fries on salads are actually the norm here in Pittsburgh, and I loved that Paul Simon connection! Please let me know what you think of the Petula Clark book, if it gets your approval I'll request my library for a copy. Pip pip to you too my friend and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving. 😊👍
DeleteThanks for the Thanksgiving wishes, Doug. I'll give you my verdict on Petula via email. I know I'll like it; I'm a huge fan of hers.
DeleteWhat do you mean you never read this book? I'm sure you recommended it last year and I got it from the library because you did, and it was so good, I had my husband read it! Every time we see Griffin on a Law & Order rerun, we talk about the book. Always enjoy your food porn!😀 And wondered if you got the $90 Medicare vote-buying rebate? We actually did get them, shock, shock but they'll be headed to some libturd non-profits soon.😉 😁
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks Bobi! No, I never read this book I swear (I still have 50 pages to go). This is the first time I mentioned it on my blog, but I'm glad someone else enjoyed it! As for the $90 rebate I don't qualify--only people that kept traditional Medicare got it, not Medicare Advantage! But that's okay, I'm waiting for my tarriff check 😉
DeletePS Bobi, you blow me away sometimes--I did find a blurb about buying this book back in Dec 2024, where I said I'd read an excerpt and this would be hard to put down.. I tried cutting and pasting it to share here and wound up deleting it. 😪 But yep, you were right on!
DeleteGuess I don't have to worry about my memory.😂
DeleteYou are amazing 👏😄
DeleteThose chicken breasts sound pretty good however you prepare them, although I’m a bit dubious about Pittsburgh Salad.
ReplyDeleteI like to use up left-over chicken in a roll (preferably crunchy) with mayo and chives or green onions (if I have any on hand) and chopped dill pickle.
I’m familiar with Dominick Dunne – I’ve read and enjoyed several of his books. The rest of the family not so much, not at all really.
I’m the opposite of you. If I find an exceptionally well written and entertaining book I want to keep going, even sit up late to finish it, but that’s me. I may go back to it in a year or so to see if it still held up. Often, it’s even better second time around.
Good on you, voting early (but not often). I hope your vote counts too.
Thank you Peter, but honestly the fried chicken salad was the best thing I ate this week. 😊 As for Dominick Dunne, I never read any of his works but plan to ask for him at the library this week. Fingers crossed we can at least make Trump a lame duck shithead.
DeleteThe chicken breasts look amazing! It sounds like you bought them "cooked". How are you reheating them? I am thinking air fryer, maybe? I think all your meals look delicious. I have found I have to do a lot of calculating in my mind with these rising grocery prices. I thank my lucky stars that my family is grown and I am not buying groceries for a family of seven with three teenage boys.
ReplyDeleteI don't need another book in my "to be read" pile, but that biography sounds riveting. I am trying to restrain myself from heading to Amazon.
Thank you for voting! Every vote counts! And I think I am off to Amazon. . . . (stop me stop me)
It's on it's way. I am devastating and angry to hear about her murderer.
DeleteMiss Merry, I can't believe you bought that book on my say-so! (But I promise you, you'll be entertained. He is an excellent writer, and an honest one.) I DID warm up those fillets in my junior air-fryer, 5 minutes was all it took and they were sizzling & juicy. I still think they were too pricey though. And you are so right, everytime I go shopping these days, I wonder how families are doing it. And no need to thank me for voting, I've only missed one election since 1980! But thank YOU for being a volunteer and a dear online blog-friend :^)
DeleteWell, for goodness sake! Who knew that about Carrie Fisher and Star Wars? Sounds like a good read. Congrats on getting so many meals from that chicken. Gigi Hawaii
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi, much appreciated. 😊
DeleteI love how you turned these chicken strips into 3 yummy meals! Your pancakes and sausage breakfast looks delish too! I love that you cook real food because many people that live alone tend not to cook very much but you go for it and I think that is a very nice thing you do for yourself. Glad you found your book among the moth balls 😂 and it does sound like an interesting read. I abstain from making any political comments in general so nothing to add about the last part of your blog except that EVERYONE should get out and vote!🇺🇸 Kimba🌻
ReplyDeleteThank you Kimba, I'm so glad we're friends. In years of cards and emails you have always said the very kindest things. 🧡💛💚💙
DeleteHi Doug, sorry about the LC flare up, that sucks. Wow, $7.60 for three seasoned cooked chicken breasts?? You don’t want to know what that would cost here. The meals you made look delicious. I too had pancakes a couple days ago for lunch. Mine were just right crispy on the edges too, yummy! I put Canadian Maple Syrup on mine though.😆 I know nothing about Griffin Dune, now you have me intrigued. I will look him up. Glad your vote has been received and is securely stored. Like Kimba says everyone should get out and vote! Take care.❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin I am so glad to hear from you my friend, was just thinking about you this morning! Thank you for the kind words and I would've much preferred Canadian syrup on those pancakes of mine. 🥞. Yes the LC flares are a daily thing I'm afraid, I could use a miracle. Anyway Happy Thanksgiving my lovely friend, hope you and my guy Chuck have a wonderful holiday. ❤️💙💚
