Loved Ones & Other Strangers (and shaven ones too, I suppose)

I felt pretty lucky yesterday.  Tuesday night I was talking to a friend on the phone and telling them I was supposed to go on a senior outing to Chili's on Wednesday, but didn't think I'd make it because of these LC flare-ups.

Me & my dear gal Evvie, outside our senior center on Wednesday

Wednesday morning I was awoken by a huge thunderstorm raging outside, and thought "Well, there's no way I'm walking a mile in all that!"  But an hour later both the rains and inflammation in my face subsided, so off I went.

I was so happy when I got to the center and saw Evvie, and she told me she was going to Chili's too.  This was the first lunch we'd be having together since December!

To be honest, the lunch wore me out.  There was too many of us to sit together at the large table, so Evvie & I sat at a smaller one.  5 minutes later, Barb Wire jumped up from the other one and joined us and said "I need real conversation!  Not all that jibber-jabber behind us!  Do you agree?  Well, do you?"  Barb is 87 years old and always on a tear, I fear she is in the early stages of dementia.  She then proceeded to rant how awful everything was, and told Evvie she had to beg me to have a drink with her at our last outing (untrue) and how we had to send Dennis home in a taxi because he bought so many bags of food (also untrue).  It just went on & on.

But when our bills came, Barb asked if I'd look at hers.  I told her "They're charging you for the side of macaroni you sent back, and for two orders of potato soup, and you only had the one, and you got that in place of the fries your burger was supposed to come with which I asked the waiter if you could substitute soup for and he said yes."  She said "I'm so confused, what do I do?"  I said I'd take care of it.  She thanked me for looking out for her so that calmed her down some.

When I got home, I was so worn out I wanted to take a nap but found a strange note on my door--more on that in a moment, here's a few pics first.

My boy Dennis who said "DOUG I AM HAPPY TO SEE YOU!  I'M ALL DAMP BECAUSE I CARRIED $500 WORTH OF HALF DOLLAR COINS TO THE BANK ON MY WAY HERE TO TRADE IN FOR SPENDING CASH!"

This is Claire, who attends all the lunch outings and is just about the sweetest person you could meet.  She was anxious to show me her Native American bag and laughed when I said I dug her papoose.  She's a dear.

Here was Evvie & my table at Chili's. A half hour after we arrived this place was packed.

Evvie's meal--a half rack of baby back ribs, fries & street corn.  Evvie said those were some of the best fries she's ever had, and I very much agreed.

And here's my meal--Nashville Hot Chicken Crispers, Brisket Quesadillas, fries, white cheddar mac n' cheese.  I brought half of this home for dinner, and it was real tasty but needed something green.

I was shocked when I was eating, and someone came up and hugged me from behind--Candy Kim, who was there with her husband!  She used to attend these lunch outings regularly, along with my friend Mary.  She's about 7 feet tall and reminds me of Maude.

She whispered "I'm sorry I couldn't come with you guys, but my husband has health issues and I don't have the time for 5 hour lunches!"  God bless her, she's so funny.  I just love her.

And finally, when I got home I found this post-it taped to my doorknob.  "Would like you some company."  A male in his 60s, fun, clean.  Why is shaven underlined?  He's discreet and lives in the building.  Very convenient.

I have a feeling I know who this is.  I was downstairs in the lobby this weekend, waiting for Amazon to arrive with a package.  This man walked into the lobby to get his mail, looked in his mid 60s, my height, a little rounder.  He smiled and nodded, got his mail, walked out.  A couple minutes later he came back and wanted to introduce himself, said his name was Bob.  I have a feeling this is him.  Oh well!

  1. Wow! What an interesting day you had, Doug. That thunderstorm seemed like an omen (Hurricane Barb Wire?). I had pictured her to be about your age, but it turns out she's in her eighties. You certainly have the patience of Job to put up with her. So nice that you got to see Evvie again. Your meal looks delicious; I agree with you that it needs some greens. It definitely sounds like the note's from the same guy you saw in the lobby. Take care, friend.

    1. Good morning Steve, and thank you my friend. And yes, Hurricane Barb Wire is right! I don't want to be mean, but she’s a real pill. I'm afraid she'll discourage Evvie from going out again. As for that note... this actually happened once before. I must have some good pheromones. 😄

  2. The group from the senior center are quite the characters! Sounds like a lot of fun, and I agree, that plate needed something green.
As for the note, I could explain why shaven is underlined but I fear I'd ruin your innocence.

    1. Haha thanks Maebeme. It is an interesting group, I'm fond of most of them. As for the note, I admit I'm a little slow on the draw but I'm far from innocent. But I get it... I guess! 😄

  3. Dug, you may not get out much... but when you do, you seem to definitely have 'interesting' days! Glad Evvie got to be there. The food looks good... and looks like a lot... I imagine most must take some home with them. Nice of you to help Barb. As for the note... don't know what to say about that. Perhaps he just needs a friend? (but shaven and discreet??)

    1. Hi Rian, thank you my friend. 🙂 I was glad to see Evvie and a couple others, and it really was a lot of food. I think everyone took food home except for Barb who called it tasteless crap. As for the note, I was telling a friend last night that I could use a buddy my age too... but I think this character is looking for something else. I'm not planning to call.

  4. I love quesadillas and mac and cheese, so I would love that meal. Your fellow lunch guests sound interesting but in the case of Barb, trying and tiring. Some people can wear on us like that. It was very thoughtful of you to help her. I'm guilty of not looking at my restaurant bills closely enough; I need a Doug to help out with that. What a very strange note! Hmmm.

    1. Thank you Margaret, didn't know if I'd be hearing from you today but very glad I did. Yes, Barb is really wearing on me, not sure these lunches are worth it. I do scrutinize my bill, I bet your John does the same. 🙂 As for the note, for all I know he meant to leave it on Chantillys door on the other end of the hall.🚪

  5. So glad to hear you got out and dined with the gang. Dennis is quite the character, I actually looked up the weight of a half dollar (.40 oz) which means his coins weighed about 25 lbs if my math is correct. No wonder he was sweating!😂 As for that note, I would avoid it like the plague, you're definitely not his "type."🌈

    1. Haha thank you Bobi, I wondered how much Dennis sack of coins weighed! Why he even had them...what a character. As for that note, I could've become his friend maybe, I could use one but he wasn't looking for that.

  6. Doug, you have the most interesting life!😳 I am so glad you saw Evvie and you were able to enjoy each others company over lunch. Your meals always look so delicious. Take care!❤️

    1. Thank you Robin but I'm the most boring person I know 🙂 I was thinking of you yesterday though, you've always been so nice when it comes to Evvie. It's much appreciated my lovely friend. 🤎

    1. Haha--thanks Siobhan. My sister just told me I should be flattered, but how did this man know I wouldn't go ballistic and threaten to kick his butt? He sure was taking chances!

  8. Miss Merry, thank you very much. Oh I don't think that note-writer was looking for a friend. I am, I'd love to know a guy my age that lived here who wanted to meet up for coffee or lunch on occasion. It could still happen, but not this time. As for Claire, she has a couple ladies she eats with but I would've greatly enjoyed lunch with just Evvie. Barb Wire is wearing awful thin on me, the center doesn't send anyone along so we all have to fend for ourselves. I'm beginning to wonder if these lunches are worth it because of her. In the future I may ask ahead if she's signed up to go.

  9. I am very surprised to find that the center doesn't send someone along on an outing they sponsor. There is always someone from our center on any outing - even one in early December where they just ride around in a mini van looking at Christmas lights. I think I would call the day before and vet the list, lol.

  10. Miss Merry, you are spot on. To be honest, the last couple days I've been giving this a lot of thought, and it's not worth all the time, expense and aggravation. One bad apple really can spoil the whole bunch!

  11. As usual I’m glad you could get out! Our group is going to Chilis tomorrow evening. Senior centers are full of characters, I call them children who talk back, lol. Omg, that note! Maybe you should stop shaving. 😅. Joyce

    1. LOL! Thanks Joyce, maybe I will! 😄 And I hope you have fun tomorrow, and have something good to eat. I wish our center did dinners instead of lunches, but beggars can't be choosers! 🙂

  12. It sure sounds like there was ALOT going on at your lunch outing but so glad to hear you were able to make it. Evie looks like a sweetheart and it really looks like you enjoyed spending time together! Bless you for your patience with Barb Wire ( I imagine her to be like one of Kristen Wigg’s characters from SNL). And the note left for you was the icing on the cake, wasn’t it? How icky! Grow a very big beard.🧔‍♂️Kimba 🌻

    1. Thanks Kimba! I hope you're well! Yes, it was wonderful seeing Evvie again but I'm afraid there's nothing funny about Barb Wire. She's a sour, mean person and is taking all the joy out of these lunches. As for that note, haha I actually got one of these (from someone else) a couple years ago but at least that one asked me out to dinner! Well, at least you're giving me permission to grow a beard now (wink) 🤎

  13. I've been waiting for someone to ask, did you call your mystery man? I was also going to ask why you needed permission from kimba to grow a beard 😅😅😅

    1. Hi Cathy! No, I didn't call him but I did hold onto the note with the phone no. Who knows how I'll feel down the road. ;-) As for my friend Kimba, we worked together in the 1990s. One year when she went on vacation, I decided to grow a beard. When she came back she ordered me to shave it off. She wasn't my boss, but she was bossy. ☺️

  15. For some days I’ve been pondering what to say. I could do my usual rave about what I’d prepare rather than what you ate, but I decided not to do that (okay, not entirely).

I’m glad you caught up with Evvie. I would really like to meet her but given her age and mine that probably won’t happen. Next time you see her give her my best from your Aussie friend.

I don’t know about your 50 cent coins. We have them, but they are really big and clunky and no one collects them (okay, I imagine some do). Dennis must have had a whole bunch of them somewhere. By the way, he looks a little like me, except I have more hair and I am slightly slimmer (only slightly) and I don’t carry my keys on my belt loop or carry pens in my top pocket.

Okay, forget what I said at the top, your mac and cheese looks like a dish I prepare – Gnocchi with three cheeses. Simmer a small chopped shallot in white wine for about half an hour (reducing the wine). Add some cream, some blue cheese (a lighter one, not the heavy stuff) and some grated cheddar. Toss that on the Gnocchi and throw on some grated parmesan. A good pinot noir goes well with this.

Looks like you have an admirer at your apartments. Probably not one you’d (or I) would team up with.
