Shopping at Amazon.com: Time for some cooking, coffee & music

The other day after placing an order on Amazon, I looked at my account and ‘Orders Placed in 2020’ and sat straight up in surprise:  there must’ve been 40 separate orders on there!

No wonder they’re always pestering me to join Amazon Prime…

I thought I’d add a new category on my blog, online shopping.  I mean, why not—isn’t there a trendy thing on Youtube now called “unboxing”?  Oh really?  It’s been around for years?

Well, that’s me…. always a little behind the times!  Anyway, here’s my most recent order and by the way, no one is paying me to review these items.

1.  Gorilla Grip Original Non-Stick Baking Sheet

  • My own tag-line:  If you’ve got an apartment sized stove… GET THIS.
  • Price: $12.99
  • Bought at:  Amazon (click here)
  • Remarks:  Standard stoves are 30” wide.  Apartment stoves are 20-24”, which makes it tough (for apt dwellers like me) to buy bakeware like cookie sheets half the time.  This pan measures 11.75 x 17.3 inches; not only is this the perfect size for my 24” oven, it is HEAVY-DUTY.  Very thick, doesn’t flex, has silicone handles.  And I love the raised lip!
  • My Grade:  A, easy!

2.  Eight O’Clock Coffee the Original, 72 count K-Cups (6 boxes, 12 per box)

  • My own tag-line:  Just like the Eight O’ Clock Grandma used to percolate
  • Price: $27.44 for 72 cups (but this varies a lot)
  • Bought at:  Amazon (click here)
  • Remarks:  Remember those storm chasers in Twister?  I’m a coffee chaser in Pittsburgh!  Folgers Medium Roast is my favorite, but Eight O’ Clock is a great backup if you can find it cheap enough.  Target & Walmart.com sometimes sell these cheaper than Amazon.
  • My Grade:  B Plus

3.  Sony ICF-506 Analog Tuning Portable FM/AM Radio

  • My own tag-line:  Less doo-dads means less things to break down.
  • Price: $48.00
  • Bought at:  Amazon (click here)
  • Remarks:  I’ve been wanting a good tabletop radio, something I could set on my kitchen counter or on the bookcase in my livingroom.  While this was more than I wanted to spend, I am loving it.  Two BIG knobs on the side (tuner & volume) and an AM/FM switch on the front.  The speaker is big, sits behind a metal grille and has terrific sound.  Very solid feel, weighs 2.1 lbs, a nice ‘heft’.
  • Also:  This comes in a cheaper version for $28.00 but it’s smaller, the casing is all plastic and it’s battery powered only.  (Mine has an optional AC cord and includes a fold-down carrying handle.)
  • My Grade:  A, though I still think it was $10-15 too expensive.  But it’s a SONY and was built to last.

Well, until next time… hope I didn’t bore everyone half to death.  This seemed a lot more interesting when my neighbors downstairs were asking what all was in my big Amazon box!

Here’s my coffee & tea drawer in my kitchen, right below the bread drawer.  A perfect spot for my k-cups.

  1. It's like getting presents from yourself when the boxes arrive, huh? Had a self-present arrive yesterday. Unfortunately the new and very lovely little camera wasn't ready to start snapping. Turns out the line that said "brown body" should have said, "brown. Body only". Now I have to order a camera lens which was not included. (sigh) But hey! We have do our part to help the economy.

    1. Haha Florence, you said it! But I am sorry to hear about your new camera... when you get the lens, you really should do a camera review. You're a photographer and people who read your blog (like me) would be very interested in what equipment you use. I hope you do it :)

    2. Who sells a camera without a lens?? That's Nuts!

  2. I might be a real weirdo but I love hearing about the details of people's days and lives. That includes what they buy! I shudder to look at my amazon orders over the past covid months. I've also bought a whole bunch of kindle books instead of figuring out my library's new procedures. *hangs head in shame* That is a beautiful and sturdy looking cookie sheet! I'm an Equal Exchange Mind, Body and Soul coffee fan; I also buy it at amazon.

    1. Margaret you're not a weirdo--a lot of people like others details like you do (me included), I think that's a requirement of bloggers :) Anyway I need to do the same with MY tablet & library, darn it. And yes I love this baking sheet, it's really well made :)

  3. Great buys! I notice you bought Lipton tea bags. I prefer instant tea powder that you mix with water from the faucet and add ice cubes. Easy and delicious!

    1. Thanks Gigi and I will look into your instant tea mix, because 90% of the tea I drink is iced tea! (And as you know, it can be a hassle to make.)

  4. Think ya done good Doug. Isn't it amazing that there is little you can't find at Amazon. They do claim A to Z. Now I just have to take a trip to the recycle center for all the boxes I've accumulated.

    1. Thanks Patti, haha for real about the amount of boxes you have?? I will have to say one thing, I buy locally when I can--I'd prefer we have busy Main Streets again--but Amazon sure makes it easy, don't they...

  5. 168 orders for 2020 thus far with 7 more orders on the way in the upcoming days and I'm guessing we will be close to 200 by the time the end of the year arrives. We are prime members and I'm not much of a shopping person yet am mostly responsible for restocking our household so I do rely heavily on Amazon. Not having any place within 80 miles except Walmart which I have boycotted for decades also doesn't leave me with much choice other than to rely on Amazon.

    1. My goodness, that's certainly a lot of orders... okay, I feel a little less guilt now. :)

  6. My purchases (not from Amazon) recently are:
    A box of 25 books.
    Another box of 25 books.
A third box of 25 books.
And, why not? A fourth box of 25 books.
A nifty device for julienning spring onions (probably called green onions in your neck of the woods).

    1. Peter--haha! That is a lot of books, sir... were you at an estate sale? And thanks for clearing that up about spring onions--you're right, we call 'em green :) BTW, you'll ALWAYS be the Music Man... I'm a little sad to see that TGB isn't really going anywhere...

    2. These were ordered online from the bookshop and delivered to my door. I just had to lug them up three flights of stairs. I didn’t order them all at once; they were a few weeks apart.

  8. You should check out Amazon Prime. Free shipping and free returns, plus you get Prime Video. I have 110 orders this year. Some like toothpaste are $5.00. Yet the shipping is free! I ordered several wheelchairs and the return was free. Remember, I live in Hawaii, which is the most isolated place on earth!

  9. I have Amazon Prime. It was a gift perhaps a decade ago, and now I use it all the time. I order stuff and in a few days it just magically appears. I enjoy ALL of your posts, Doug. It's your space and the great guy you are comes through loud and clear. :-)

    1. DJan, thank you for sharing you're a Prime member too. Trying to decide... it helps. Also, your words here are so kind. They sure meant a lot to read, thank you for those too. :)

  10. Gee, I feel like a piker. I've only made half a dozen amazon purchases this year (altho' my wife has made up for my laxity). Like the others, I'd highly recommend joining Prime. You make the money back in free shipping; plus you get the video streaming service. Btw ... radio? What's a radio?

    1. Haha, thanks Tom--y'know I DO get free shipping most of the time (you just have to pick the right option carefully) but more & more I am seeing great priced products "for Prime Members only". Also, you guys do get a great video service... I forgot all about that. Thanks! PS. I know that radio is old school, but it keeps my tv off, at least! :)

  11. I also have been using Amazon a lot since the Pandemic. We order our gloves, face shields, and grandkids' gifts from them since we aren't going into stores. We don't have Prime, but have considered it... although we have found that delivery has been fairly quick. Since I have my own book on sale through Amazon, I appreciate their deposit into my account ever so often... and I do occasionally order books for my kindle from them.
I noticed your Keurig order. We order from Keurig also. Our favorite is Dunkin Donut's 100% Columbian (a medium roast). They have been out of stock of it lately, so may have to go to Amazon for it. Sorry this is so long...

    1. It wasn't too long, I enjoyed the read--thanks Rian. (And you have your own book too, congrats on being a real writer!) That Keurig box DID come from Amazon, though I used to shop at Keurig.com--but a lot of their coffee prices went up big time. (That Eight o'Clock is over $40.00 on Keurig.) Anyway, thanks for your feedback Rian :)

  12. You have drawers for your bread and tea/coffee?? I am just green with envy. Your Sony radio will certainly last a very long time. I have one that I bought to put on my worktable in the shoe factory way back in 1993 I think, could have been '94 or '95, either way it is at least 25 years old, maybe 27 and it still works well. The tape deck works less well, the tapes tend to slip a bit, but I don't listen to cassette tapes anymore anyway.
My stovetop is set into the kitchen bench, with a separate oven set into the cabinet below that. The hotplates area is only 19" wide, add the side part where the knobs are and it is 23", then the oven door is 23" wide, but inside the oven is only 18" wide, so when I moved here I gave all of my big roasting pans and cookie sheets to the kids.
I'm not a fan of apartment living, (no linen closet doesn't help) but I've got used to it. I love online shopping too, but delivery costs here are too high so I only buy something I really need if I can't find it in the local stores.

    1. Wow, thanks for sharing all that River; I enjoyed reading that. Your oven sounds even smaller than mine. Interesting about the drawers too, yes that one cupboard by my stove has 4--a junk drawer (batteries, tape, pens, etc), a deep bread drawer, my coffee/tea drawer, than another deep drawer for kitchen utensils. To be honest, I have a linen closet too, right outside my bathroom. I'm feeling kinda special tonight, thanks :) As for shipping, yes I'm sure it would be high given you live in Australia... but I'm sure you wouldn't trade it for anywhere else :)

  14. I echo what DJan said. You are a super great guy, Doug. I see the delivery truck on the street and I'm always thinking stop, stop, stop even when I haven't ordered anything. Well... I did order something today so I'll be waiting for that truck to stop in a few days. Hey, that cookie pan looks great. My pans are too thin and bend in the oven.

    1. Kay, you always leave the nicest comments, thank you! I think you're super great too. ) I have to rell you, I laughed at your "stop, stop" with the delivery truck, haha--I do that too! And yes this cookie pan IS great, it doesn't do that flexing thing in the oven--but it IS pretty small. It will last forver though :)
