Here’s a recent lunch I had at the Senior Center. A steakburger, diced potatoes, cantaloupe and “broccoli slaw”. I’ve never eaten or heard of broccoli slaw before, and I can’t say I loved it, but it DID taste very healthy. And the steakburger was delicious.
In fact, that burger was probably in my top ten list of all-time favorite burgers, it was that good. And trust me, I’ve eaten a LOT of burgers in my lifetime!
The Center has lunches Mon-Fri, I usually attend a couple of them. Last week my first lunch was a spicy sausage sandwich with peppers, cooked spinach with sliced onions, a watermelon salad with feta cheese crumbles and butterscotch cake. I announced it was the best lunch I’d ever eaten there, and they seemed to get a big kick out of that. (I think they included my comment on a feedback form.) I meant what I said!
My second lunch (on Friday) was grilled salmon, roll & butter, a “rice & carrot” bake, tomato bisque soup and chopped melon for dessert. I was taken aback, it was restaurant quality, all of it. And no lie, the best soup I’ve ever eaten. Many people said the same and asked for seconds & thirds.
Lunches are free, if you’re over 60 years old, a registered member of the center and you let them know a minimum of 2 days in advance. We get a lunch menu on the first of every month.
A $3.00 contribution is suggested if you want to donate, but it’s not required. No one has ever asked me to, but there’s only been 2-3 times I didn’t donate to the “lunch box”, a small wooden box with a lock outside the dining room. (The lunches are funded by the Pa Dept of Aging & state lottery, our donations go towards the center.)
To be very honest, it was a real adjustment for me at the start, going there alone to attend these lunches. I have more than enough money to eat at local restaurants, and these meals feel close to handouts. What would my dad say?
But my reasons for going weren’t to save a buck; it was loneliness plain & simple. And now that I’ve made some friends there, I can appreciate the lunches for their nutrition.
I just have to watch the sweets. A couple weeks ago, I went to Courtney’s office after lunch to talk about an upcoming outing. When I returned to my seat in the dining room, most of the people had left, but one of the ladies left these candies with my keys and papers.
Why did she do that? Well, I am the Casanova of California Avenue!
Morning Doug, your lunch looks delicious! We can get broccoli slaw bagged (no dressing) at our local grocery store. It isn’t my favourite either but I put it in my lunch salad along with other veggies. Three dollars for that lunch?? Wow, tremendous deal. Glad to read you are getting out and enjoying these lunches. The bag of candies was very sweet.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Wednesday.❤️
Good morning Robin, and thank you for the nice comment--I know I wrote about the senior center already, but the lunches these last couple weeks have been so outstanding I felt they deserved a shout-out. Of course, it's the people too (why I enjoy going). Hope your Wed is a good one as well. :^)
DeleteYou're so funny. Casanova indeed, and what a great looking lunch! Our Senior Center has $5 lunches, and they sure look good, but I don't indulge, not needing to eat that much in the middle of the day. :-)
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks DJan! Well, $5 is still a great deal in these times, and boy do you bring up a good point about something--the ONE con I have about these lunches is that it is a lot of food, early in the day. (Lunch is served at 11:30, not a minute later.) I can't eat breakfast if I know I'm going here in a couple hours.
DeleteNo breakfast and possibly a smaller supper, you'll be svelte in no time!
DeleteHaha thanks River--I wish!
DeleteWow, those meals sound wonderful (and a heck of a lot better than I serve here at home). Better still, to have good company to enjoy them with.
ReplyDeleteMaebeme, you just summed up my blog in one sentence! 😄 Thank you, and you're so right.
DeleteI wish I had the time and ability to cook such fabulous meals. Truly, they sound absolutely fabulous! I am so glad you're a member of that senior center. I wish we had something similar here in Honolulu.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi, I wish you did too--but if I was married to Gigi Pittsburgh, we'd probably be going to nice restaurants like you & David! :^)
DeleteHi Doug! Wow, that lunch looks amazing! So glad that you decided to do this. Research shows that social isolation is not good for us seniors. By keeping more in touch with others, we can add better health and perhaps years to our longevity.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a real social butterfly, but do meet up with friends at least 2 - 3 times a week. I never regret it. Enjoy those delicious meals! (Now I'm hungry; my healthy salad I have for lunch just won't cut it!)
Carole
Haha thank you Carole--well, I'm glad I wrote this blog before going today, none of my friends were at the center today and I ate alone! But at least I got out, and like you said break up the social isolation a little. I hope your salad was tasty!
DeleteThese lunches look better than our local public school lunches. Have you met the cook? Some Senior Centers are better than others and you seem to have an outstanding and well supported center. The group has welcomed you with open arms.
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan--to be honest, when I first joined the center the food was like a poor version of a school lunch. But in July they got a new vendor, and the lunches improved 100%. But you are so right--they did welcome me with open arms, the staff there is just wonderful.
DeleteYour lunches look and sound fabulous. I'd be eating there every day, and gladly pay the $3 for the privilege. I've never been to the senior centers here in Fresno but have heard about their meals, and they don't even come close to what you are getting. Getting to know people is also healthy!
ReplyDeleteThank you dkzody--well to be honest the lunches aren't always this special, but I don't want to look a gift-horse in the mouth! Hey that's cool you live in Fresno, I was just watching something on tv last night where they mentioned Fresno and I had to google it :^)
DeleteI shudder to think what the news item might have been. We aren't known for too much good news. We do grow the world's produce in this Valley, though, so there is that good quality.
Delete😄 No worries, it was just an old movie on Tubi!
DeleteWow, I am so impressed by your lunches. I have eaten at our senior center. Trust me I was there for fellowship and not that food. Ours serves very heavy carb loaded selections with sugary desserts. Not the healthiest choices. I have had two friends who signed up for "meals on wheels" after surgeries and they both ended up cancelling since they either could not have those foods on their diabetic diet or the food was so salty and spicy they couldn't eat it. I think Ohio needs to take some lessons from Pennsylvania!
ReplyDeleteWow, I am shocked--I'm sorry to read that Miss Merry, but thank you for sharing. I just assumed there were all kinds of nutritional guidelines in place. I also thought Ohio was similar to Penna in regards to their senior stuff.
DeleteYour Senior Center lunches do sound and look good, Dug. We've only eaten at ours once... so I can't compare. DH had a hotdog with chili and chips, a drink, and a holiday cupcake for $5. I just had bottled water (no gluten-free menu). But they offer their specials for $5, and then other things like BLT's, salads, etc. for $3... 5 days a week. Don't have to put any orders in, just show up... but then, they aren't free. And hey, those caramel coffee candies are good!
ReplyDeleteHaha thank you Rian and YES I am now addicted to these Werther's Candies! Well, I would love to just show up--but our center gets the EXACT number of lunches and they are very strict about it. Reserve your meal at least 2 days in advance and be there no later than 11:30. At 11:45 they'll give it away!
DeleteOkay, Hot Stuff...settle yourself!
ReplyDeleteThose are nice meals, and I like that those people with money to throw away on the lottery are funding something good. Mostly, though, I am glad to see you socializing. The isolation as people age has been the downfall of many.
Haha, thanks Debby (I like Hot Stuff). Yes, I used to WORK for the Dept of Aging 30 years ago, and knew how PA looked out for their senior population. And you're right, the isolation can be a bit too much--but being social (in person) is hard for some of us too...
DeleteBut look at you adapting and socializing and being the building stud!
DeleteThose potatoes look good, rather like the ones I make. I steam chunks (about that size), then fry them in duck fat. Pepper, salt, grated nutmeg.
ReplyDeleteThe best steakburger I ever had (and had it a number of times) was in a small establishment off Shattuck Ave in Berkeley in 1970. Yes, it was that long ago and I still remember it/them with fondness. They grilled them over hot coals, you chose what you wanted with it – they had a table with 30 or 40 additives: mustards, pickles, onions, chillies, tomatoes, etc.
The best soup I ever had was at an upmarket restaurant here in Melbourne 20 or so years ago. It was Parsley Soup with a couple of yabbies (Oz freshwater crustaceans) in the middle. It was so good I went back a couple of days later for a repeat. It was still great.
Oops, I seem to be taking over your column.
Duck fat, wow--that sounds delicioso! Peter no worries, I always enjoy reading your stuff, thank you for sharing. And nothing beats burgers at Berkeley in 1970, how cool is that.... :^)
DeleteThose lunches, oh, my! My mouth is watering over the butterscotch cake. Loneliness is both literally and figuratively a killer; I'm so glad you're getting oot and aboot as my Scottish grandfather used to say.
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret, and if you see this I hope you're feeling/getting better--I know you're not the type to spend a lot of time alone (though I'm sure Mari loves it) :^)
DeleteOk, I'll join you the next time I'm in Pennsylvania. I have a recipe for "chinese" broccoli slaw which has a dressing and crushed up uncooked ramen noodles in it. It was common in the '90s for school event potlucks. One way to get veggies into my gut. Hope the new vendor can stay! The now $5 dinners as an option at my apartment complex are very starchy and not healthy. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteLinda if you're ever in Pennsylvania I would love to meet you! Your recipe for chinese broccoli slaw sounds tasty-crunchy, I'm intrigued! And sorry for your unhealthy $5 meals, I'm curious about this apt complex of yours...
DeleteI live in an old 1960s nursing home for retirees or those needing housing for a transition time! A church bought it when it closed and turned it into several apartments. The main 2-story part has some apartments without private showers, as in those older buildings where the showers were shared on the floors. There's a big dining hall, where dinners are served M-Fri without needing to give notice. They have a church room in the basement and washer/dryers for low coin rates. The mailboxes are in the main building, so I wear my mask whenever I'm out of my own apartment. The old annex has several bigger apartments, so I have a 3-bedroom with my own full bathroom and kitchen, and an extra sink in a previous bathroom. Utilities are included for the now $780 a month, so I don't mind the window units and wall heaters in each room, with exposed sprinkler pipes for the price, on the ground floor, with two doors and a patio 20 steps from my parking lot. I have 8-foot wide windows, and two closets in some rooms: (you know, Patient A and Patient B...) Linda in Kansas
DeleteCheck around; churches purchasing old schools, dorms, and nursing homes is a trend for their missions to take care of people.
What a cool read, Linda thank you for taking the time to share this! I wish I could see it for myself, wow 3 bedrooms and a nice monthly rent too... I sure wouldn't mind winding up in a similar type residence. Thanks again for all the detail Kansas Woman, I always enjoy your feedback. 😎
DeleteIf there is any broccoli in that slaw then I am Queen Victoria. But I am glad it was all delicious. Those candies look wonderful. Here we can only get the original butterscotch flavour, I'd love to try the caramel/coffee variation. I'll keep an eye out for them here but won't hold my breath.
ReplyDeleteThanks River and I hope you can find the coffee flavored, they really are delicious--I'm hooked! As for fhe broccoli slaw and you being Queen Victoria, haha! Well, it certainly didn't taste like cabbage so who knows!
DeleteHi Doug, this is totally off topic. I know from reading your blog you are not a sports guy. My question is, do you by chance know of any die hard Steeler fans? I have two signed footbalss, with no idea where, who or how to get rid of rhem. Dee
ReplyDeleteHaha no problem Dee--and you're right, I'm not a sportsfan but I do know a few. Can I ask who the footballs are signed by? I'm sure they'll ask.
DeleteRothlesberger, his rookie year superbowl win and Jerome Betus. Thanks Doug, I am in ND surrounded by Vikings fans. Dee
DeleteWow, some big names--okay Dee, I'll pass it along!
DeleteThanks, I bought them both same time right after the game was over from QVC. 2006 I think it was. Have the receipt, they are still in tge boxes they were sgipped to me un.
DeleteI'm rather jealous of your meal options, Doug. Just switched my browser to Chrome to see if it will solve my commenting problem.
ReplyDeleteHi Florence, I'm sorry you've been having problems with your browser. This comment made it! As for my meal options, please don't be too jealous haha. I don't want to say anything disparaging here but let's just say the lunches are a 50/50 thing. 😉
