After we hung up, I went in to use the bathroom and saw this nasty water stain above my shower head. I took this photo, went on the Steiner website, posted it and requested maintenance.
I knew it was going to be a tricky thing. Our bathrooms have drop ceilings for easy access to pipes. The back half of our bathroom ceilings contain heat & cooling pipes for our own apartments--but the front half, where my shower head is, contain bathroom plumbing for the apartment above you.
The next day, Steiner contacted me and said James was on his way. I like James, he's a trim black man, 60 years old, loves to talk but is very courteous and very professional. He came with a replacement ceiling tile and all kinds of pipe repair tape, clamps, etc. and told me the leak looked like a small one, and I was lucky. If it had been a more serious one, I'd have to wait for ED. ED is Steiner's "master plumber", a larger than life character in high demand.
After James completed his repairs and installed a new ceiling tile, I thanked him and walked him to the elevator. He said "If you see the SLIGHTEST indication of another leak in the next month or so, let us know right away. But you should be good for a couple more years at least." I said okay, went back to my apartment (had to use the bathroom) and saw this:
I ran back into the hallway shouting "WAIT!" just as the elevator doors shut. I called Steiner and said the leak on the right side was repaired but now there was a leak on the left. They said they'd get someone back out here as soon as possible.
The next morning Steiner contacted me and said that James said there might have been some residue in the pipe, and asked if it was worse. I said yes, it was worse alright.
They said okay, they would be sending ED the master plumber, tomorrow.
So the next morning, Ed shows up with his helper in tow. (Ed's a tall bald man with a ring of wild white hair on the back and sides of his head. He's 67 but looks 77.) I said "Hi Ed, you look different than the last time I saw you." He said "How far back was that?" I said it's been 3-4 years. He said "Oh sure, I've lost 60 pounds since then. I can't be carrying all that extra fat into my golden years!"
As Ed and his helper started dismantling the ceiling, hooking up large tools and barking back and forth, I went into my bedroom and shut the door. My head and face were on fire. I can talk to someone on the phone for hours--but being around people and noise sets my long covid into overdrive. When I woke up today, I spent the morning with pretty bad shakes.
When Ed was finished, he knocked on my door and asked if I wanted to come see. The ceiling looked great. He apologized for the bathroom (the floor was covered with grit, dirt & plaster--the tub streaked with oil.) I said it was not a problem. He said "Are you alright? You look shaky." I said I had a neurological condition that's been slow to heal. Then I said "I almost forgot, where's your other helper?" (I couldn't remember his name, it's Josh. Josh is 26 year old and a plumber's helper, anxious to learn the trade.)
Ed said "That's a sad story. Josh got covid back in...January. Came back to work a couple weeks later, ready to go. A couple weeks after that, he got sick again. His parents took him to a couple specialists. They said he has something called long covid. He told me he has a good day here and there, but mostly he stays indoors. It's going on 3 months. He doesn't see an end in sight."
I said "I am so sorry. Do you have a couple minutes? I want to share something with you." Like I told Ed, at least I'm in my sixties, retired. Josh is a young man, just starting out. I'm not a religious man, but I'm praying for him.

Hi Dug! So sorry about your ceiling, but it seems they were on it quickly. And really sorry to hear about Josh. I guess Long Covid affects all ages... I just wonder why. Sure you have wondered too. So many have had covid over the years, but why are some affected so badly? Guess they are trying to figure that out... at least I hope they are. We all react differently to different things... and I'm sure there are reasons for each... maybe one day it'll be easier to discover those reasons.
ReplyDeleteMy eye is still healing. Eye Specialist says we don't need another surgery (thank god)... at least not at this time. So, we'll wait and see. I think it's healing.. just may never 'feel' normal again... and that's ok with me (I guess).
Thank you Rian, and I'm glad you don't need another surgery but at the same time I'm sorry that your eye may never feel normal again. I actually worry the same thing.... been dealing with a bad flare-up since very early this morning, and I can't help but wonder if this will ever go away.
DeleteHey Doug, incredibly quick service fixing your bathroom ceiling! Hope it is fixed permanently. Goodness, poor Josh, to be so young and affected so awfully. You would think by now doctors/specialists would figure something out. Sorry you were having a bad day when this all happened.Take care Doug.❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you Robin, and it's nice to hear from you. You're right, they were very quick to make those repairs. As for Josh, I do feel very bad for that young man. Ever since my own LC's return in September, it's been nonstop rough days or plain terrible. It's a real curse. Thanks again for your friendship Robin. ❤️
DeleteWhat a shame for the young man, Josh. I can know you can relate to his situation better than most. I do hope, for both of you, that things will get better.
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to get the leak repaired quickly, so much damage could be done if left for too long.
Thank you Maebeme, I do feel good about the leak. I know this was a sorry post to read, I just felt so bad about Josh.
DeleteI've had a couple of leaks and am petrified of them. They are unsightly, expensive and stressful! You are fortunate to have such a responsive management company. I'm glad it's fixed but so sorry about Josh. (and you) Long Covid is so scary and awful! :(
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Margaret, you're right about stressful. I kept waiting for my ceiling to flood. As for Josh, I know that was a bummer to read, and I hardly know him, I just can't imagine anyone else having to go thru this long covid, let alone such a young age. :^(
DeleteWow, I always feel terrible when young people are brought down with medical issues. We at least got to enjoy our youth. It doesn’t help us feel any better, but still. I STILL have a lot of trouble with my surgical side ear and head, plus vertigo and balance problems. I’m almost finished with PT and it has helped some. But I, like you, are wondering when ( and if) this is going to get better. Joyce
ReplyDeleteThanks Joyce, and my gosh I am so sorry. Been a pretty rough few days on my end as well, just feeling worn out. I hope you're hanging in there. ❤️
DeleteYeah, I’m ok. I’ll have a couple of good days and then if I do too much I get pressure in my head and the tinnitus gets super loud. It’s not terribly painful, but I have to use an ice pack and go into the bedroom to a recliner for a couple of hours. I think everyone around me is tired of hearing about it. I have hope it will resolve as I still have another FU with my surgeon in June. It is now 6 months post op. I am happy that the surgery relieved my two issues but I feel like I traded one thing for another. I am finally weaned off the gabapentin I took for 15 years, so that’s progress! Hope you have a good weekend. Joyce
DeleteWell Joyce, that is wonderful about the gabapentin. I was on it myself, it didn't help but so many side effects! Thanks for the update...
DeleteSorry to hear about your leak and Josh. Is there any way you could contact him, maybe you could be support for each other? I missed commenting on your beautifully clean oven and your delicious looking meal, but i have another question, how do people clean air fryers? I've purchased two different ones and returned both because they were impossible to clean. I must be missing something.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bobi--well, I would not want to contact Josh, I have nothing encouraging to say. I've been battling mine for 2 1/2 years and except for that 2-3 month remission last summer, I've been housebound since. Thanks for your nice comment about my stove though, that made me chuckle :^) Hey--good question about cleaning the air fryer. I need to examine mine more!
DeleteWe have a family friend who got Covid in his 20s, before the vaccine was created, and has long covid. Everything changed. His mother has stayed so worried as her son morphed in front of her. He did just get married, to his girlfriend of 10 years, so that is of some comfort. Is a resolution to the problem being worked on? I hear nothing :( I know this is not a solution, but I do send good thoughts to you and hope you and young Josh will find relief. Olivia
ReplyDeleteThank you Olivia, I sure hope your friends son has made an improvement. If someone is working on a cure I'd like to know too. It's a bear. I appreciate your good thoughts. 🙂👍👍
DeleteThe randomness of this long covid stuff is what never fails to amaze me.
ReplyDeleteLast night I watched a new report about it, they said you have a 6% chance of contracting long covid that is cumulative with each covid infection. I got long covid after my third or fourth infection. I was always immunized too.
DeleteGlad you got the ceiling and leak taken care of. It sounds like your complex has a great maintenance department.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about Josh. I got chills when I read that paragraph. It is such a serious condition. And just as serious for you, too. I hope and pray for both of you.
I got talked into working for the election in May. I looked up Covid boosters and they recommend people as old as me get one every six months. Our last booster was Septmber. I scheduled last Thursday and it should be good for election day. People think I am crazy but anything that can provide protestion or even lessen symptoms is a no-brainer in my book.
Thanks Miss Merry, I always think of you when I reference long covid in my posts because I think of your son-in-law. I knew hearing about Josh here would trouble you. I think that's great about signing up for election work, and I think it's very smart about the boosters. I need to look into that too. Thanks again MM 👍
ReplyDeleteGigi Hawaii. I have never had Covid, and neither has David. Don’t know why we are so lucky. But, you do get good repair service, it’s awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gigi, and yes you and David are certainly lucky in that respect.
